It's not the router because I get perfect signal and download speeds on every single other piece of tech in my house.

I have looked on every setting for the Airport and there is no way to disable this 'DFS' mode.

I'm stumped, going to ask for an exchange today.

try putting it on manual on channel 153. Not sure if it will fix it, but it's my last idea. It's possible that your other tech works fine because it is using 2.4 ghz channel instead of 5 ghz, so it is using a standard channel on 2.4.

Thanks - bizarrely the only channels available on the 5Ghz manual radio setting are;

36, 40, 44, 48

However, there has been a development this morning. I turned the Mac on at 7.40am (1 hour ago) and I am able to keep a strong, consistent speed across not only the Airport, but also my routers default wireless signal. Normally within a few minutes of connection the speed has bummed out dramatically. I disconnected the Aiport last night ready to box up and then gave it another shot this morning and it works fine. I have even connected my iPhone and PC and had them running simulataneously and the Mac still stays consistent. I did reset the SMC again this morning on first boot - maybe this time I've managed to clear the problem.

I hope so because it's a perfect machine otherwise. And I can now take the Airport back for a refund if the connection is fine on the router :)

Resolved

Very happy now - I can finally download all of my iTunes purchases and my beloved Guild Wars 2.

Resetting the SMC for the third time mixed in with a restart of the Airport has definitely fixed the issue. I've now disabled my router's WiFi and re connected all of my other tech to the 2.4Ghz and put my iPhone and MacBook on the 5Ghz and everything is running like a dream.

Finally can relax and be stupidly happy again, just like the day I opened the box :)

Thanks for your helpful input, and thanks to others for their sarcasm but I can now go and play happy :) :apple:

Good to hear and most importantly thanks for posting back. There's way too many variables to immediately blame the hardware. Too many people do exactly that in forums unfortunately, and a high percentage of them complain and never come back or never post any resolution.

I had to do the same thing with my setup, btw. The 2.4 GHz band is way too flooded in my house. Thoughtfully placing devices on both bands and separating them out as much as possible solved my connection issues.

^ Exactly this.

Now I've got a strong 5Ghz signal with only two devices and everything else settled on 2.4 it works a dream.

I was blaming hardware because I'd done everything possible before, but that final SMC and Airport reset seems to have kick started it now. It's still perfect 10 hours later so hopefully it will continue that way!
