I agree that we're in a completely different time, but then there's no need to spoil your child. You're setting her up for a big fall when she enters the real world and actually has to pay for things for herself.

Stand outside a school getting out in NYC and you'll see about 80% of the students with cellphones pressed to their ears or being used to frantically text all their friends.

Yes, the cellphone has replaced the pencil-box.

did you have the big Motorola saved by the bell style brick?

i think i have one of those in my house somewhere.

I had this unit that mounted under the seat in my car and had a corded handset. Sure, I looked cool, but I'm pretty sure it hardly got used, lol

1000 weekend minutes = Free
Unlimited Text Messages = $20 a month

That's "excessive?"

In the sense that it encourages the child to sit on their phone all day, then yes. There aren't better things a child could be doing than sending 4000 text messages a month?

And this is to be encouraged because...

We're considering turning off our landline. I'm pretty sure by the time my daughter is paying for her own phone, it'll be even cheaper than it is now and will likely be the only phone she has.

And, sure, I'll pay the $9.99 to keep her on my family plan forever if she wants (and add in $30 for data).

In my house that's a bargain for all the babysitting we get.

Like bringing about world peace? Or ending hunger?

Well, when you make a post complaining about the price, that's what I'm going to respond to.

If this is what you were thinking, you probably should have said THIS instead of what you actually wrote. I'm not a mind reader.

You (and all other parents) need to make kids pay for text messages.

I don't use them that much, but I do at times. I have noticed that a lot of other people don't seem to realize that they charge per text, not per word. They treat it like IM instead of e-mail. In other words, they:

Texter 1: Sup?
Texter 2: NM. U?
1: NM. Bored.
2: Me 2.
2: LOL
1: LOL

This is why all kids should have to pay for texts! If they're going to act like kids with a 20 cents/message service, they should pay for it like grown-ups.

I'm 22 and majority of my text messages come from CNN (news updates) or those stupid AT&T browser messages. My friends have left texting and gone to facebooking since it can be reached by cell phone browsers now... :)

i didnt get my first cellphone until i was 17 and even then my dad made a big fuss why i didn't consult him

What happens when children 2-5 want the same, if not more, and at a younger age?

Erm.. no.. like studying, or actually going out and talking to people.

Our 11 year old does not have a cell phone.

I would not presume to criticize you for posting on this forum instead of doing your work or being outside talking to people. That would suggest I know the circumstances of your situation. Likewise, you don't know mine beyond a number and an idea of what you might do differently if you had the same situation.

I see the phone as a reward for hard work, not a handout.

Or so you think since she is probably busy text messaging instead of babysitting. I mean let's be honest, you can't text 24 hours per day, probably only 50% of that. So the original 5 text/minute estimation is more like 10 texts/minute. That is one every six minutes. Of course that only includes outgoing, so assuming she is getting replies, that is one text message every 3 mintues, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year.

I'm not criticizing, just pointing out an interesting observation.

what if its just 50 texts incoming out going an hour thats not that much. Then it would be much less frequent

You could criticise me if you like, but then again I'm not a 13 year old, and thus am not in school.

This means she's not putting enough attention into her school work.

That's precisely my point, however of course my opinion isn't valid since I'm sat in an Ivory Tower

What?

It's 5 sent per hour (assuming 8 hours of sleep).

That's one every 12 minutes. Where the heck does 1 every 3 minutes come from?

If she was sending 1 every 3 minutes, the monthly tally would be roughly 19,000 messages!
Hardly the case here.

More than enough, in my opinion.

To the OP: do you not see that your 13 year old daughter sending 2000 text messages a month is bad enough, let alone nearly 4000. That's around 8 messages per hour, presuming that she's awake for around 16 hours. Does your kid not go to school? Spend time on homework? etc etc.. Wow.. I can't believe you haven't taken her phone off her a long time ago!

You don't know the OP or their daughter. Mind your own business.

Since the OP posted to a public forum, one would expect he was inviting opinions. Otherwise, why would he post it here? You clearly don't have anything constructive to say, so how about you mind your own business?

I'm not the one passing judgment. You're the one (along with a few others) who has basically accused a 13 year old of being spoiled, poorly parented, and perhaps maladjusted because she uses a lot of text messages.

Girls are very social especially at that age. I'm sure if the OP wanted your opinion, they would have asked for it.

4000 text messages is nothing. A woman in the US got a 300 page AT&T bill for sending 35 000 text messages in a month. Your daughter has a long way to go still, lol!

Completely agreed.

Isn't that what the OP is doing by posting to a public discussion forum?

one of my friends sent 12000 in a month and received like 27000... no joke.

well, i could be wrong but still I'm pretty sure.
