I used to swear up and down that my 12.9 iPad Pro's were the best possible size. Then Last year I bought an 11", and I have found that I use that one almost exclusively unless the battery has run down on the 11"

I see it two ways... First Apple is seeing the 2023 economy is going to be bad so time to reduce the number of SKUs. That way they cut cost by just producing what they know are their steady big sellers.

Second, there are rumours of a 15" Macbook Air M2, that would be far more useful than a 14" iPad.

A 14” iPad Pro is only useful if Apple wants to loosen up their iPadOS restrictions. If iPadOS 17 is just incremental over iPadOS 16 there isn’t a lot of reason to go there.

Apple needs to open up iPadOS to move the needle.

What should they do with iPadOS?

With AR/VR on the horizon display size will be made irrelevant. Unless they launch this in 2023 or never

Honestly, people under estimate the impact on the world just from ar being able to replace tv and computer monitors. Being able to put on glasses and have a 100inch screen tv right in front of you wherever you are is a killer app

ARRGRGGGGGGDDDDFRRRYYYYYY!!!!!

We get the absolute dumpster fire abortion of Stage Manager that barely functions and has a tiny niche use case for maybe 8/100 people, but we can't get a larger battery (because thinner is unfortunately an obsession), better Files management, an ACTUAL SSH CLIENT, Xcode, Apple's Final Cut suite, move the FaceID and Camera to Landscape, and Lock Screen manipulation.

I am so ready for a 14" iPad, put one on my wall in my kitchen for HomeKit management as well as doubling as a wall TV. My 12.9 is wonderful for this usage, as well as my other 12.9 I use for Work, but I am so ready for a larger screen size.

Mouse and Keyboard just no longer interest me, I am always Full Screen with my apps and swiping and typing on the screen is a dream. 14.1" I would buy three just to start.
You bemoan all the current shortcoming with the iPad but yet you have TWO 12.9" units??

“What the heck all I wanted was”: *lists everything under the sun*

I really wish the iPad had magnetic charging, but that doesn't stop me from owning one.
It’s simple. Apple qi charging needs a big upgrade before it will be ready for ipad. iPhones on non MagSafe chargers only charge at 7.5 watts. Even MagSafe is only 15 watts. Can you imagine wirelessly charging an ipad 12 inch at 7.5 watts? That would take days. That’s why usbc isn’t going anywhere anytime soon on ipad.

I know, but a girl can dream! :)

In July, Ross followed-up to say the device could feature a LCD display instead of mini-LED.

That sentence makes no sense. A mini-LED display is still an LCD display. And what he was probably suggesting is that it would still have an LED backlighting, just with far fewer zones than a mini-LED one.

Other than significantly reducing the iPad line-up (which they haven't), I don't think there's much correlation between this hardware product being postponed or canceled and whatever they do or don't do in terms of iPadOS.

As for thin obsession: the iPad Pro is still slightly heavy for something you hold in your hands, so I can't really blame them.

What the iPads should be using for MagSafe is a version similar to what the MacBook Pros use. There is zero reason to waste the space using a Qi based inductive charging system, not to mention the need for a glass back.

They’re already using a form of this with the Magic Keyboard pinned connector, and I usually charge this way through the extra USBC port on the MK.

If apple is going to release a VR/AR device that costs $3000, wouldn't it make sense to release a $2000 iPad first?
