When a message is highlighted in the message list in Mail hitting the delete key on the Smart Keyboard Folio does nothing. This is happening on my 12.9 3rd gen iPad Pro. Deleting text still functions but you cannot delete a message.

I’ve seen so many bugs in ios 14, granted this one will only be seen by those using a hardware keyboard, that I’ve come to think of it as iOS 13 part II. In addition to the delete key issue in Mail, the arrow keys no longer work in the Kindle app. I have to wonder if they even bothered to test this software on their own keyboards.

I am actually finding that NO hardware keyboard actions are recognized when the Message List is in focus - I tried to undelete a message (⌘-Z) but no go.

My guess is that all these manufacturers of 3rd party keyboards will push Apple for a quick update.

I'm using the Apple Smart Keyboard! This has been a lingering issue - prior to 14.2, Mail would lose connectivity to the keyboard - sometimes restarting Mail would resume the connection, sometimes I had to disconnect the keyboard and re-attach. None of these workarounds work with 14.2.

IMHO this issue is no small thing. Imagine if Apple‘s own MacBooks’ keyboard had connection issues. I think there would be a huge uproar. The iPad keyboard accessory (in my case the MK) is much, much more than just an cosmetic “accessory”. How do these issues get past beta testing?

Maybe we should be contacting Apple regarding a warranty claim. Maybe this is an iOS issue, but what if the existing hardware can’t be fixed via yet another iOS update?

That’s what floors me. Did anyone at Apple even use 14.2 with one of their own keyboards!! I had no issue either with my Smart Keyboard Folio nor the Magic Keyboard prior to 14.2. Even the issue of the keyboard backlighting that would remain on even when the ipad was in sleep had been fixed along the way. But now the delete button doesn’t work in Mail, the arrow keys don’t work in Kindle, who knows what other keys don’t work in other apps. The arrow keys in the Kindle app had been reported by others in the Appleseed discussion forums and I assume had been reported back to Apple, so that one they should have been aware of. My guess is that there is or soon will be an outcry from 3rd party keyboard makers that will lead to a quick point update release.

Well part of the reason I didn’t go with a 3rd party keyboard was that I thought they might not be supported very well. Well, it seems Apple cannot even support their own hardware. I do BTW like that there are manufacturers that are willing to make accessories (not made by Apple) for Apple devices. Sometimes those have some unique design and function.

I just spoke with Apple Support and they are now looking into the IOS14.2 issues ....non functioning delete key in MAIL on the Magic Keyboard and the issue with password protected excel files in NOTES getting a "Decryption failure" message. ( my workaround...You can hit the FWD arrow and open in OFFICE). Apple was not aware of these issues and will now address. 11/08/2020 at 12:30PM

Thank you!!! This is driving me nuts, as I switch between my iMac and my iPad Pro several times a day. I’m using an external keyboard, monitor, and mouse with the iPad Pro. So, I constantly forget the “delete” key on the iPad’s MK and my Logitech keyboard in Mail does not work. Well at least it is making me “unsubscribe” from a bunch of self-inflicted email I joined over the years

This is crazy. there's long been a problem with the delete key not working randomly. However, in 14.2 this bug seems to be bigger than prior version, the delete key isn't mapped to a keyboard shortcut! hold down the CMD key to see the available keyboard shortcuts and delete is not an option...

Okay, I’m probably wearing out my welcome on this problem, but your are right, the delete key was working intermittently and the with 14.2 it was totally dead. I just wasted so much time culling my email this morning. Is this same problem happening on iPhones?

I thought it was Logitech problem. I headed to the Apple store, returned my Logitech Folio touch and bought a Magic Keyboard. Now I miss the function keys. And I feel awkward that my $1500 iPad is naked.

This also affects the Magic Keyboard, wonder if any 3rd party keyboards are also affected.

Yes discovered this the other day. It seems to be an issue with the “mail app”. I have spark enabled as my default email and the dlete key does work with that. However there are times when spark will not display images in the email body. In addition there are times when some external links for images in a safari page will not display in safari.

I thought my keyboard was starting to die, had me worried until I realized it was a bug of some sort. This is an absurd issue to exist for this long and to get worse. I got so sick and tired of Apple's Mail app, I don't even have any accounts signed into it now.

Give Spark a try, issues with other versions of IOS before 14 led me to give it a try. Once you get use to it, it takes a couple of days, I liked it. It is now my default mail app. Oh it is free and is regularly updated. It is by Readdle I give 4 to 4.5 stars

Just got a return phone call from Apple Support ...they are now well aware of the "delete key" issues and are working on a fix. Not sure as to how long before it gets resolved. My other post regarding the 'decryption failure" when you put a password protected excel or word file in "Notes" is something they will need more feedback from users before they address that issue. My work around of hitting the box with the fwd arrow and then opening in Office works for now. It requires you to enter your password twice to get to the decryption failure message and then you need to open in Office and again enter your password twice. 11/12/2020 at 1:10PM

Interesting…I just added my email account to Outlook Mail and the delete key works there. SO it must be an Apple Mail account issue.

I have been complaining about this apple mail/magic keyboard iOS 14xxx delete “bug” since the first beta version of iOS 14 was released (about 7 weeks ago). They don’t respond and they don’t seem to care. There was allegedly one customer interaction with Apple support during which they claimed this was a “design decision.” It would be a pity to be forced by Apple to switch to Gmail or Outlook.

IPad 9.7 Pro with 14.2 using Zagg Folio delete key no longer works at all. Before if it stoped working I could type some characters in the Apple Mail search function, then delete them all and go back to mail and the delete key would work again

Glad this has been brought to attention... I thought it was odd that this was happened... It was starting to happen before this here and there but now like everyone says it just does not work at all!! Outlook no issue but there own app... weird!
