it is...just test the current 16" :)) 18" is already going with the gaming laptops that are more desktop with some travel capabilities ..but its not lap-able at all an 18"
24" iMac is as good for traveling as the 18" mac, just plug it in :D
We talk about something that is dead in the water...the 16" is in Apple eyes the compromised between the 15" and the old 17"
Yes, I'm on a 16" literally right now.

I'm just saying: if an 18" happened, it wouldn't be larger than laptops that Apple has sold in the past.

It would make sense if this was a deliberate leak by Apple to dampen expectations for OLED in the near future. MacBook sales have been struggling a bit and they don't want people holding off on purchases by waiting for a big display update soon.

There is no µLED on the current models. They feature mini-LED. You can't compare µLED and mini-LED. µLED is self-emitting, just like OLED. While mini-LED is just like all previous generations of LED LCD, just with smaller dimming zones.

µLED is also not a technology that actually exists in commercially available phones or laptops at this time. There's long been talk of scaling it to higher pixel densities and smaller formats (watch, phone, tablet, laptop), but for now it's exclusive to big TV panels and such.

Guess I'll be holding on to my 14in till 2026 then. Every other device I have, aside from my Surface Pro/iPad Mini, are OLED. Even my Desktop monitors are OLED.

With current generation OLED's paired with OLED preserving firmware tricks I don't see any reason at all to worry about burn-in until 7+yrs. At which point most people will have already bought a new computer or be about to. Business normally refresh hardware every 3-4yrs and most home users refresh 3-5. Not many people today are still using laptops from 2015-2016.

I can't see myself upgrading from my M1 MacBook Pro in the near future. But 2026 sounds like the right time do so. What I will do in the interim, is probably pick up a M4 Mac Mini or possibly Mac Studio to take me through. With Windows 11 support officially sanctioned by Microsoft, it will be a great all in one solution to my current setup.

Half of that money is being used to see how low of a frequency they can use for PWM (pulse-width modulation) aka flickering without actually making eyeballs bleed.

That's actually great news for me personally, I consider OLEDs a downgrade from MiniLED just because of burn in it makes no sense in a laptop...

You have many years to go. ;)

OLED came to the top-of-the-line iPad Pro before the rest of the line; same with the premium iPhone X.

The 12.9" iPad Pro is on Mini-LED. OLED is rumored to be coming to the iPad family, but it is not here yet.

I am very dubious that OLED will debut on the Air.

They're expensive parts that will be in short supply for years. There's room in the profit margin of the high end, not so much on the affordable models.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they were only available on the 16" or some theoretical "Macbook Ultra" for a year or two before it hit the Airs.

OLEDs are quite good for content consumption, which a MacBook Air is excellent at (along with many other tasks) so I can see why Apple would pick it first for OLED even if it is considered as a more "premium" technology in the general marketplace thanks to OLED televisions (which generally have higher prices than comparable LED and Mini-LED televisions).

Also, OLED prices are coming down as production capacity increases and this could drive down prices to where it is competitive to the higher-end LED panels Apple currently uses on the Air.

Can someone explain why anyone would want an OLED display on a computer?
My laptop is connected to an external display 99% of the time, so the technology used in the built-in display doesn't really matter that much to me...

And why tf would we want an OLED screen in the first place? My assumption is, actual WORK is a more valid / relevant use of these machines then I don't know, watching movies in the dark so you can enjoy these true blacks? I assume practicality > hype.. OLEDs are not as bright as LEDs and suffer from burn-in and have longevity issues. It's basically NOT a good screen for something that's supposed to be used for 8+ hours a day, with the same software, same UI layouts, etc.
I hope it's just a PR "leak" for some people who think it's "cool" to have OLED screen in a Macbook. I think it's been rumored for years now so I hope they never really intended / plan to do it and they are just waiting for microLED to be a feasible / financially sound option. That's what I'm hoping for.

Effing great! By then (2026), we will be on GPT10; AI and robots ruling our lives, and we will be unemployed and Apple will be rolling out OLED? I bet there will be another awesome technology by then. Sad...

So far no one has mentioned JOLED going out of business.

To be fair, JOLED was not linked as a supplier for these panels, so it should have no impact on the plans for an OLED MacBook Air, which is reported to be using LG-sourced panels.

JOLED was tagged as a planned supplier of OLEDs for Apple Watch and Japan Display Inc. (a current Apple Watch OLED supplier along with LG) will be taking over JOLED's IP and engineering talent so JDI will likely increase their share to absorb what JOLED was going to supply.

So, Apple have insisted on a tandem stack OLED to provide higher brightnesses and burn-in stability - this requires new R&D and new production lines which adds cost. It's been rumoured that adding an OLED screen to the iPad Pro will add hundreds of dollars to the price...but Apple will launch the display on the low cost / consumer laptop rather than the Pro device? Something is wrong.

As for JOLED, they were pringing OLEDs and as far as I know, there is no way to print a tandem stack OLED so were never in the running for Apple.

the 3-4 years out rumors seem like a recent thing. I guess they wanted to add a little humor to the mix.
