it would no longer scroll, i planned on buying a new one, they returned mine i didnt ask them too.. dont open your mouth unless you know the entire story.

I'll bite....

So as you were paying for your new one, the cashier asked you why you were buying it.... when told, she/he said, well don't buy this, return the broken one! So you walked over and they handed it to you.

Or did you take the broken one to Customer Service and then they decided to replace it?

Because scenario #2 means you did ASK.... ask something anyway....

I'm not trying to be a B*(&*, but really, as i tell my kids repeatedly. Own your actions. Don't blame someone else, don't skirt it, there is no such thing as "an accident" - there is always a root cause, and blah blah blah.

You might have been prepared to pay for a new one, but you went first to the return counter at Customer Service. That is asking....

Better to say, "I presented them with my broken 3 year old iPod and under their policy they decided it qualified as a return."

Would i personally have done this? Nope, but i'm me not you.

I know the person who works @ the sams club service desk, and thats where they keep the ipods locked up he asked me what i was doing here (friendly convo) and i told him my ipod wont scroll anymore so its time for a new one, he inturned said you bought it from here right? i replied back yeah the day after you stocked them. he said well do you have your orginal receipt? i said yep i keep all my electronics receipts in file cabinet thats what prompted him to say just bring it back with the receipt we will exchange and/or return it.

If that is the case, I personally would go with the cheaper one, but I understand your point of easy return. So just go with Costco then - it's "only" $14 and if it makes you feel better with having an easy return - do that. :)

Agreed. Since you are not concerned about possible updates, I would also go for this one.

I would go the amazon route. Can't beat tax-free and free shipping

And where do you live to not have to pay sales tax on amazon.com?

Your entire story sounds very morally hazardous to me. The scroll no longer worked because you USED IT FOR 3 YEARS!

Normal wear and tear is just not something i'm comfy with using a return policy for.... 3 years of use is probably 1 more than the "planned obsolescence" of the product.

Gee, my click wheel is busted on my iPod Video - i wonder where it was bought? It has a busted click wheel.... and a dying hard drive......

Then the manufacturer's "planned obsolescence" is too short. I don't think it's unfair to expect a 6+ year lifespan like I can from a computer.

You seriously think the "planned obsolescence" of a computer is 6+ years? I'd venture to say it's more at the 4 year mark at the MOST.

Does Apple publish a MTBF number for the various iPod's? I'm sure that my DD's 10 month old Nano (3g) has seen more "use hours" than my 4yo iPod Video. Apple replaced it last month for battery issues under warranty. I would expect with the rate of use it sees, that it would not be working in the 3 year range. It would plum be worn out, but i'd never blame Apple for that. It's also why i'm pondering if i should buy Apple Care for it before the year is up. OR just save the $40 to buy the new version she wants and keep this one as a backup when that happens.

Anyway, it all comes down to your moral comfort level....
