I wonder who will be the respective target consumers for the 14” & 16” MBP?

I moved up from 13” to 15” when I realised I was still traveling but much less so.

Having appreciated the larger screen area, enabling the contents of two items to be displayed much more effectively, I can’t envisage going down rather than up.

Maxim: Area beats weight as frequency of travel declines.

Does that foretell boom sales for the 16” ?

The basic models are much better at keeping value, ie, have better amortization rates. You buy a 1250 euros MacBook Pro, you’ll sell it for 500 euros in ten years. That makes for aprox 6 euros per month. A high end model will lose 2000+ euros during the same period. Thats over 16 euros per month.

10 euros per month pay for a shared spotify subscription, a shared netflix subscription and 33% of a 15gb 5G unlimited voice plan in my book.

Or an Office 365 subscription including 1Tb of OneDrive storage, so you have the best productivity suite and don’t need to pay for iCloud or more storage on all of your mobile devices, having better value retention on those too.

  • OLED Function strip? Useless garbage, that very few use.
  • Ports that require endless dongles? An useless, arrogant and expensive-for-consumers, fail.
  • Modern HDMI (video/stereo audio) out? Essential for those of us who make our livings making presentations. Another Video/Audio out port for still extant technologies would be welcomed as well.
  • NO-MagSafe charging port? What an equally arrogant, absurd idea! I have kids and dogs, and without MagSafe on my older lappy, it would have been destroyed by now! I will not buy ANY new MacBook until dongles are sent to the graveyard of really stupid ideas. Bring back MagSafe, or count me out.
  • SIM slot for data and telephony? Now, that would be extremely cool.
  • A keyboard that works, and doesn't get gunked up or stops functioning!
  • A batt that holds charge, and/or requires expensive replacement after Applecare's extended warranty runs out. Ya know? Come on!
  • Stereo audio out jack, well, duh!
  • Touchscreen? HAHAHAHAHA, never gonna happen.
  • M1 iteration? There had better be if Apple wants my 3.5k+ €€€ for a 16" lappy.

Great comment! I haven’t laughed this much in a while. I choked @ lappy!

This is pretty much why I won't buy a macbook any more. My 2013 mbp works better than any I have seen lately. only 1 dongle too. No homebrew m whatever. Must have an intel processor.

So, instead of having a dongle, you'd rather carry around a whole bespoke charger for a proprietary charging port that only exists on a handful of apple laptops?

I'm out on that. Give me USB-C charging. That works with every USB charging device that I have already.

On the contrary, it's a pro feature. The whole point is that only few people use it, because it's a pro.

You can use tools like BetterTouchTool to build your own set of buttons on the bar, and enhance your apps that way.

Yes, this was too drastic (and premature) a measure.

Agreed.

That's silly. MagSafe is neat, but tons of laptops are out there without a magnetic charging port, living in households with kids and pets.

Replacing MagSafe with USB-C

  • made charging much cheaper and more accessible because tons of different kinds of USB-C chargers exist
  • allowed integrating charging with the dock, so if you have a dock anyway (which I do on my 2013 MBP), that's one less cable
  • allowed charging on both sides

  • SIM slot for data and telephony? Now, that would be extremely cool.

It would, and it frustrates me how behind the curve Apple is on this.

  • A keyboard that works, and doesn't get gunked up or stops functioning!

This has been fixed years ago. Late, yes, but still, it's fixed. Let's move on.

  • A batt that holds charge, and/or requires expensive replacement after Applecare's extended warranty runs out. Ya know? Come on!

I don't know what this means. The replacement isn't that expensive, and the battery isn't really any worse than that of the Retina MacBook Pros. Unless you're arguing for a replaceable battery, but we haven't had those in a long time now.

  • Stereo audio out jack, well, duh!

Wait… is the jack mono? Do you mean digital?

  • Touchscreen? HAHAHAHAHA, never gonna happen.

I'm not convinced this significantly improves the experience.

Another advantage is if your charger died it was easier to find a replacement or get a spare to carry around.

I have a USB-C cable with a magnetic tip that works just like a MagSafe charger. I use it when I travel. Apple could build a similar cable instead of another proprietary design. I hope at least they keep USB-C charging capability on the USB-C ports.

What I'm hoping to see:

Maintaining the Touch Bar, albeit with a software upgrade. The configurability is nice. What isn't nice is defaulting to a custom layout. It should probably enable being defaulted to the standard across all apps or user-configurable bundles of apps should people wish. (If I've missed something here please let me know!)

Maintaining charging via USB-C. The standard charger is very helpful. I would not want to depend on a custom charger again, even if they include the option of MagSafe charging. Creating a charger with a second USB-C slot on it would be a good idea though. So would be offering a USB-C to MagSafe cable to use with the standard charger should people want it.

Maintaining four TB4 ports. Very useful to have a standard and to be able to plug in on both sides of the computer. Again, if they want HDMI and USB-A, they're free to include it, but there's been a lot of movement to TB4 and it's very helpful not to have to plug into a particular side of the computer.

An upgrade to M series that's beyond M1 (obviously).

A dedicated TB3/TB4 ethernet adapter. It's bordering on absurd that they've never supplemented the excellent TB2 adapter. If you wish to have an ethernet adapter that doesn't use a bunch of power or heat up like a nuclear reactor because of running on a USB protocol, right now you have to daisy chain the TB2 ethernet to the TB2-3 Thunderbolt adapter. Absurd.

And you know what would be nice? I'd be fine with a built-in SD slot.

Perhaps they can add to the current four TB4 and audio with HDMI on one side and an SD slot to the other.

But I'm not that worried about them running just with four TB4 and audio again. What I don't want is to lose some of the current TB4 ports or to lose functionality I now have with the Touch Bar.

I'm guessing the TB is history, but Apple may surprise us. Better Touch Tool helps make it more useful.

I agree. USB- C charging is a defacto standard now; using a new proprietary one would be a step back. Just design a MagSafe USB - C charging cable. While they're at it, add a USB-C port to the charger so you can charge a phone or tablet with 1 chager.
