What I find outrageous is the $1600/$1800 MacBook Pro 14 comes with only 8GB of RAM.

And you have to pay extra $200 for 16GB of RAM upgrade ($200 per 8GB).

When the price of 16GB of LPDDR5 in bulk is $20 per 16GB.

Wait until you find out what it costs the restaurant for that $3 fountain drink they want you to buy.

or downgrade... while there are advantages of the 14MBP as compared to the MBA 15, there are disadvantages that MBA owners really value, their lower weight and larger screen.
Claiming that a smaller but better screen is a downgrade is an opinion at best, certainly not a fact. And the weight difference is 0.1 pounds!! You might as well claim that it is a disadvantage that the 15" is wider, because it doesn't fit in my laptop bag...

14" MBP is +300 USD over 15" MBA, however it comes with 512 GB SSD. Upgrade the MBA to 512 GB SSD, and the difference is +100 USD. You lose 1.1" screen, and it is very slightly heavier. But, you gain the following (and I'm probably missing something):

M3 vs M2 (faster CPU, faster GPU with ray-tracing, AV1 hardware decoding)
XDR display (120H, HDR)
Longer battery life
HDMI output (effectively freeing up a Thunderbolt port and removing an adapter from my bag)
SD slot (I thought this was a dealbreaker back when
Faster charging

You'd have to be VERY in love with that extra 1.1" screen real estate to give up that for just 100 dollars more. In my opinion, Apple just killed the 15" MBA.

(Personally, I'm keeping my M1 MBA though)

I don't think using 2 monitors is a pro feature, its a basic feature. You should not have to spend $2K on a laptop to get dual monitor support.
If you have dual monitors, you obviously have a very specific workload and requirements. If you're really trying to save money, the older Apple Silicon MacBook Pros will provide cheaper options for your more niche/advanced workflows.

A macbook "pro" with just one external display output. Why? I get the cheaper price point but Apple really should upgrade the base chip to support at least 2 display outs if they want to put the non-Pro chip in a 'Pro' device.
They know that businesses keen on running dual displays will pay the $300 premium to hop up to an M3 Pro... sucks.

I don't consider dual-headed displays in basically 2024 to be a "pro feature" any more.

Lots of comments about missing features meaning it is not for pros. It's been a long time since 'Pro' meant for professionals in Apple's world. Pro just means 'The better, more expensive one'.

This 14inch MacBook Pro with M3, I believe, is aimed at people who don't have the professional workflows, don't need the crazy performance, but want the better hardware, the better screen, the pro motion, the better webcam, microphones, the HDR brightness for videos etc. I believe there are a bunch of people where the performance of the base M3 is more than what they need, 2 USB-C ports are fine for them, but they would like the better screen tech etc.

This is that product. No different to the iPhone 'Pro', most of it's buyers are not using it for professional workflows, but they want the more premium design, the pro motion etc

Yes, the pro-sumer. There are plenty within the market that can appreciate the QOL differences, without depending on those differences towards specialized workflows.

This can also be seen with the iPad Air and iPad Pro with M1. When it comes to the hardware, mine has kept up with anything and everything that I am doing for work and grad school.

Exactly. This is a superior replacement for the ridiculous 13" MBP.

Serious pro laptop users will not buy this base model. It is for those who walk into the Apple store and want the cheapest Macbook Pro they can get, for some reason.
No, it is for enterprise. As an Office delivery device, it is a great product. There are a LOT of people outthere for whom "work" means MS Office, mail and a web browser. At my work we are giving these people ****** Lenovo's at a higher price than this MBP for that type of work, because the IT department don't know how to support Macs.

It’s a bad deal, yes, but ignore this model if you do serious professional work.

Apple didn’t make this machine for you and yes you’ll pay more for the one that is for you (this was already know).

The term “pro” is a selling moniker. It doesn’t really mean there is pro work and non pro work. Apple created the skew to sell more product and nothing more. People around here need to stop attributing personal preferences to the product and then blaming Apple for it not being pro. It’s all empty rhetoric because some here don’t like that they couldn’t justify pro purchase.

I think this comment describes the situation perfectly.

It's kind of weird how the people that should be buying the larger models anyway are complaining about the base model that they would never buy, rather than looking at the upgrades to the one they actually want. There's no insight at all, just moaning about price. Apple is expensive, what else is new.

The iPad Pro also only supports one external display, so...

I agree, although I think it's possible that we'll see a price decrease on the MacBook Airs when the M3 versions are released. As is, the 15" MacBook Air doesn't make any sense.

Apple Marketing runs all the groups. No one gets approval without marketing therefore you have a bunch of money grubbing “courage” decision makers make stupid decisions exactly like this just for more margin$

In other words, you have been asking for a 15" MBP...
Well no I don’t really need to power of the Pro i’d rather have the battery life, so the M3 in it basically provides that. (least that’s how it looks so far)

I think this would have been the prefect machine for many who want a pro but don't need the top end specs but just an Air with bells and whistles, except 8gb is a disgrace.

So it is cheaper for Apple to order different chassis (so the factory needs to stop production > change matrix > start production and all the logistics behind) instead of keeping a thunderbolt port. Smells like cheap decisions and is interesting for Apple to come so down to recover costs. Next year what they will remove?

You know this forum is generally filled with Apple lovers. And most seem to defend Apple for things that they really shouldn't. And yes, I am a huge Apple fan myself.

But I'm happy to read most people ******** on Apple for this.

Tech should always be moving forward. Not taking steps backwards.
FU on this one Apple.

I think its time to get a discounted M2 Pro.

I don't think using 2 monitors is a pro feature, its a basic feature. You should not have to spend $2K on a laptop to get dual monitor support.

It does support two monitors, Thunderbolt 3 has always supported two monitors. Whoever decided to write this clickbait piece has decided to ignore the fact he can run multiple 4k monitors at 60hz. It can run 3 monitors if you don't need 4k as well.

TB4 just has a new version of DP which can handle multiple monitors at insane refresh rates and resolutions that aren't needed by most people.

They're all pretending it's replacing the M2 Pro which it isn't, the bottom end 14" M3 is clearly replacing the 13" M2 MBP, they're just trying to deceive.
