Thank you for doing these tests.
Based on the picture, I would call it 8-9h battery life (actual use). If I'm reading it wrong, anyone please chip in.

Sounds about right. After using the M1 MBP, which gives you 12-18 hours, it’s pretty disappointing. FYI - finally an honest reviewer -

So, the battery has depleted.
  • I have set Google Chrome as my default browser
  • I have disabled ProMotion and set the display to 60 Hertz/fps (see below)
  • My usage consisted of web browsing mostly, using Chrome, and using other Electron apps, such as Zoom, and Slack.

Here are the results:
  • 100%: 2:30pm on 10/29/21
  • 69%: 5:30pm on 10/29/21 - the computer was put to sleep by closing the lid
  • 68%: 7:05pm on 10/29/21 - the computer was turned back on and started watching Twitch.tv and connected the computer to 34-inch LG Ultrawide monitor
  • 4%: 11:57pm on 10/29/21 - the computer was put to sleep for the night
  • 3%: 11:02am on 10/30/21 - the computer was turned back on the next day
  • 0%: 11:58am on 10/30/21 - the computer was completely discharged
  • total battery life: 21h:28min

Thank you for sharing.

But I wouldn’t count the time it was asleep as battery life.

So if you look at actual usage time, it was about 7h.

@anshuvorty

Thanks for sharing your results, really appreciate your efforts with the testing.

If you don't mind, can you test again with 60hz and low power mode at half brightness while using safari or ms edge (not chrome)?

I'm just curious to compare the battery life of the 14" m1 pro with the 13" m1 while keeping performance as close to each other as possible.

TIA.

Ok sure.

Video calls with cam running on yours and others? Or just a voice call with screen share?

It is the worst app lol. They haven't updated or even optimized it a little bit for M1 Macs or Macs in general
Cam running on mine and others plus screen sharing.

Both teams and zoom. My 14” 16GB Ram 16 GPU used about 5% an hour. But then I got on an hour long zoom meeting and it dropped 15%. I think I’ll end up getting about 7 hours if I have to have all these video calls.

I used mine today for work. Outlook, teams, word, excel. Keyboard is cool, fans are silent. Screen at 80%. Battery life was great as well.
Still can't believe a full year later Teams is still not a universal/native app, even though Electron 11 was released a year ago that is. I've been running it in my browser instead of the app due to this.

A decent enough workaround for Teams is to install Microsoft Edge (Universal) and then install Teams as a Web App. You get an ICON to launch it directly, notifications if you want them, and there are very few downsides. You can still blur your Webcam via Control Center by setting it to Portrait mode as well.

I'm not a heavy Teams user, but I have a client that depends on it and this seems better than running the Intel binary and way less taxing on battery CPU.

I can tell a different in battery life when using teams vs not . Its noticeable in that the battery is even better.

HArd to tell because the fans on it are so quiet. Will check iStatistica to see fan speed when using it.
Ok so I tested during a meeting last night and the fans were running at about 2500rpm. I couldnt hear them though and the laptop didn't feel particularly hot. My 2020 MPB used to spin the fans up to about 8,000 rpm and it felt hot so its an improvement. Note i have the 10 core version of the 14 inch MBP

That’s pretty good, but the fact they spin up for a video calling app on a laptop like this is still a bit crazy! Teams/Electron is ridiculous.

My unscientific observations since getting my 14" top end Max for a Pro are that battery life is looking quite a bit better on the new laptop. It no longer feels that the laptop won't last for one entire work day.

yeah you cannot count total battery life like that, I will do the same test but put it to sleep for 3 days and then say total battery life: 81h:20 min, makes no sense
