Um, there are only 5,686 hospitals in the United States. And the article specifically refers to the "top hospitals", but to be fair, I am not sure of the criteria for deeming them "top hospitals".

Opps! Changed millions to thousands on my original post. I’m surprised at how few there actually are. I stand to be corrected :)

Anthem just reported a security breach which exposed 80 million members. Yes these HealthKit thingies are cool. But seriously, we need to get security and privacy fixed first. I dont need my medical data or xrays of my... whatever... being stolen and sold.

If they can do this with airtight security, then okay, but too often privacy and security is an add on or afterthought
So your data at the hospital system is safer how? They are online so I don't see a difference in breach threat.

Or it could mean that after almost 12 months it’s not really catching on.
Interesting math, introduced in June released Sept 29 2014 with full rollout mid 2015.

"How do we get Apple to work with Samsung? I think it will be a problem eventually," said Brian Carter, a director focused on personal and population health at Cerner, an electronic medical record vendor that is integrated with HealthKit.

Simple. Apple implements all of HealthKit as a chip design, then Samsung mass produces it.

14 out of how many a few thousand?

In 12 months thats good going for the Health industry. It takes a hell of a long time to get anything moving in the industry. So many laws, rules, regulations to need to make sure you adhere to that it can take years to get a new system up and running

Its always going to be used in a few places to start with and then the others will take it on if it works. No industry takes on a new product across the board unless its forced on them

When I first heard about HealthKit, I wasn't much interested. But for the past several weeks, I've begun using Apple's Health app (mainly out of curiosity). I'm pretty impressed with it. I used to use a pedometer on the iPhone when I went for walks. But the Health app automatically does that for me, without even being activated. I find myself now comparing my daily and weekly activity levels, whereas previously I had no interest in that. I guess that's what happens when an app is so simple and clear to use.

I totally agree!

Can't trust apple for this one

As a type 2 diabetic I used HealthKit to record my blood glucose levels. Then around 8.02 somebody discovered that there are two systems for recording blood glucose (apparently a different one in Australia)... so, instead of fixing this or offering a different measurement scale, iOS 8.02 DELETED all of my readings... thanks Apple, way to go.... I don't think I would ever trust HealthKit with my data.

I'd love to use the Health app on my iPhone 6 but what exactly denotes a compatible accessory? I had a walk around the stores selling weight scales and other bits and bobs recently, and while many claimed "Bluetooth Connectivity" this usually meant with their own app only, and even in the local Apple Store when I asked whether some scales they had for sale was compatible with Apple's Health app the Apple employee concerned had no clue what I was talking about!

So, can anyone please tell me how I get something that can talk to my iPhone to measure my weight? It'd be great if there were ones to measure my blood sugar and blood pressure too, but the scales would be a good start...

TIA

My withings ws-50 can talk to an iPhone. Mines set to use the wifi. It's health compatible.

one of the reasons i want an apple watch is to be able to utilize healthkit. i'm assuming that my steps even when not holding/carrying the phone will count, along with HR when working out....

right now i have to manually add in steps counted by my fitbit (thanx a lot fitbit for not working with healthkit ) but not by my phone.

Per the "I'm only going to shop at stores that accept :apple:pay" mentality, how long until we get "I'm only going to get medical services from health institutions that use health kit"?

"Sir, you've been in an accident and we're getting you to the nearest hospital"

"Do they use Apple's health kit?"

"I don't think so"

"Take me to a different hospital then- one that does use health kit"

"But sir, these injuries are life threatening"

"If I die, I die. Got to be a health kit hospital or forget it"... "Oh, and they need to accept payment via Apple Pay too".

All ;)

Hilarious! ROFL. Thanks for my daily dose.....

Good intentions but

"If we had more data, like daily weights, we could give the patient a call before they need to be hospitalized," This just makes me laugh. Normally you have to bang doctors over the head to even begin to give them the idea that you are sick. The intent of this statement is wonderful, but the reality is that overloaded medical personnel spending most of their time trying to get rid of patients are not going to be adding very much to the equation.

There's a reason all of these automated / smart devices like Fitbits + phone apps to alert you when you are not sleeping enough or whatever are doing so well. We're going to be relying increasingly on machines to maintain our health in the future, and that's why data/support frameworks like HealthKit are important, not because human staff are going to use them.

Couldn't agree more and less at the same time. You are absolutely correct, in its current form Health Kit is *near* useless to the real medical field. However, advanced monitoring is on its way into the home.

This is an AMAZING device, that if linked to Health Kit, could save lives and drastically reduce health care costs. I worked as an ICU-RN for 3 years before becoming a CRNA and can't tell you how often I saw the same people come in with CHF exacerbations over and over and over. Few if any had health insurance and most never paid their hospital bill. If you place one of those bad boys in the PA and link it to they're cardiologist's office - they may not end up in the ICU on the vent, just maybe in a room on IV diuretics for a day or two. Generally speaking we know PA pressures usually go up 2-3 days before clinical symptoms appear. So if Health Kit linked to this device alerts a doc's office, the office can have the patient come in well before symptoms are so bad the need to be in the ICU.

Make no mistake, this device is the first of many paradigm changing opportunities. The bill to be on a med. sug. floor for 2 days on Lasix vs. ICU for 1-2 weeks is INSANE. The county hospital I worked at estimated that ~35% of their non-insured pt's never paid (and legally couldn't be turned away).

*IF* Apple could land data distribution rights for this product through Health Kit, it would immediately make it a legitimate contender in the health care field.

Yeah that is a PITA. It is Fitbit trying to data silo you into their ecosystem.
There is a 3rd party app called Sync Solver that transfers you Fitbit data over to the Health App. Works pretty well, sometimes it needs a bit of encouragement to actually sync as often as you would like, but it is miles better than typing your data in manually...

14 Major hospitals, and none of them are in Australia. ..

I'm trying see which one will be the slowest roll-out here... Apple Pay or this.... .
