This isn't a moan, but anyone else find the always on display a bit distracting in your peripheral vision?

I know its a new experience, but I think its because the screen still stays 'on' with the wallpaper visible, that it just looks like the phone has forgotten to lock.

A number of times ive reached over to press the lock button as ive forgotten... only for the screen to unlock and me to remember my mistake!

When im sat at a desk, or on the sofa at home, the phone is face up next to me.... but I find that its very attention-grabbing as I can always see it out the corner of my eye!

As I say, its not a moan at all. - but I know that some people have taken to leaving their phone face down now because of the distraction in their peripheral vision. Yes, I know that you can turn off the AOD but then you lose some convenience. Pick the phone up and turn it over to see at a glance what's been going on....

I do wonder whether maybe the wallpaper could/should have been dimmed a lot more than it has in order for it to not look like its just been left on and unlocked.

It really doesn’t bother me. It is just a matter of brain training to something new, instead of thinking there is a problem.
I think you are right and its just something new...
After all there are devices around all the time with always on displays such as Amazon Echo shows etc and they don't distract me at all.

I suppose its just a new thing to see the phone always lit up like this.

No. I like being able to glance to the side of my desk and see the time, weather, etc.

I have thought my phone was on a few times though.

For me it is distracting and I disabled it.
it does make sense on the AW as the watch face of a traditional watch is „on“ all the time, too.

For me, tapping the display to activate it lying on my desk is perfect.

It‘s great that it is an option, though.

You will get used to it.

I've had AOD on my secondary Samsung phone for ages, and it feels odd if it wasn't on (means out of battery).

So having AOD on my iPhone feels natural for me.

Nah, I like it . Love that Apple finally joined the party for it.

I’ve had android devices in the past so AOD isn’t super new to me. I think it’s an extremely useful feature. Instead of constantly pressing the side button / tapping my screen to look at my notifications, I can just take a quick glance at the screen.

I must admit im giving it a few days and then will probably switch it off like you do.

It feels somewhat counterproductive to turn off a new flagship feature of the phone.... but its just distancing and personally doesnt really add much to the experience, especially when you have an Apple Watch on you wrist as you get your notifications on that.

The widgets I suppose can be handy depending on configuration but if I want to know what the weather is doing I look out the window as thats always more accurate than the weather app!

I suspect I will end up with the phone face down more often than not now and so that really tells me its time to turn it off perhaps.

Doesnt Samesung's implementation along with most others just show a time or suchlike and the rest of the screen is black?
I think the biggest distraction is the wallpaper being still visible for me.

Androids had this for years and I was never able to get used to it. Just found it to annoying always on. If I had a 14 I would disable it. But to each their own.

Yep. Been on Android for the 7 prior years before getting the 14 Pro (had iPhones before that). I picked up a 12 Pro this summer to dabble back with iPhone, and loved it except for the lack of AOD...it was so disquieting looking at the phone and having the screen be blank. With the 14 Pro, it feels normal and natural.

It takes some time to get used to but overall neutral to it. I may end up disabling it especially if it cuts into battery significantly. But it is kinda nice to see the time if you are in a meeting or social situation and don’t want to be obvious about looking your phone.

I have it on. It’s not been super useful to me though. I will keep it on as long as the battery life is as great as it currently is.
It doesn’t hurt to have everything at a glance.

It’s such a useful feature I think you’ll get used to it. I had it with Android and I really missed it when I made the switch

I came here ready to post a new thread, but then I saw this one, and yeah... I'm having this same experience. I've resisted turning the screen off in hopes that I get used to it, but so far, I'm not loving it... Maybe if there were more information on the always-on piece, I'd get distracted, but at least it would be informative. Here it's like a clock with a widget. It's also hard to notice when it comes out of its "always on" state. I don't find the transition jarring enough. Oh well I'll keep it going for a bit and see if I come around.

I turned it off. I found that it was eating up too much of my battery (14 Pro). I also want some options too. I don’t need to see my wallpaper, I would like to have time, date, notification icons and maybe weather.

No. I love it. I can look at my phone while working without having to wake it up. That‘s it. Pretty simple.

Turn it off if you aren’t a fan.

Is the clock on the Lock Screen supposed to stay up to date? The display is always on, but the time is wrong. When I tap the display, sometimes the time jumps several minutes. Seems kind of pointless to have the AOD if it doesn’t keep the time current.

My time is correct. 🤷🏻‍♀️
