I meant desktop as opposed to workstation, but it turns out a workstation is a desktop, it's just distinct from a personal computer (according to wikipedia, anyways). Perhaps my post should have read "affordable desktop computer".

Most people buy desktops rather than laptops because they are cheaper, more powerful and easier to upgrade. The gap between the iMac and the Macbook Pro is typically very narrow in all 3 of these respects (excepting the last 18 months in which the 27-inch had quad-core and the laptops did not).

Aren't all i7's quad core.

Aren't all i7's quad core.
Wasn't the 2.8Ghz mac book pro i7 a quad core.
If it wasn't then what was it?

FML i just spent 3 grand on another mac laptop. i opted for 8 gigs ram matte display and 500gig 7200rpm hard drive in a 17" case. It's such a depressing excitement. what a wonderful first post ever.

The older Arrandale Core i7's were Dual cores that were hyperthreaded. They showed up as quad cores in activity monitor because the threads are virutal cores.

The new 2.0 and 2.2 Ghz Core i7's are quad cores hyperthreaded to 8... 🙂

You should've known the first two weren't coming. That would be like being disappointed that Blu-Ray wasn't included.

There was no way, and basically everyone knew it.

3G (not even 4G) was questionable for even the Air, and it didn't even happen.

Agreed.

Why not just tether? Id rather have other functionality and longer battery life than built in 3G/4G/LTE. I feel like the more wireless features built into a chip the more power its going to consume, even if those features are off. These days wifi or bluetooth tethering is so easy that to include 3G/4G/LTE is kind of moot IMO.
