Apple is claiming that the graphics update for 6750M are significantly (2.8x - 3.1x) faster than previous models. Here is the fine print [link]:

How does this jive with previous comments that the graphics update is at best the same as, or even, "worse than" the 330M?
I haven't seen any benchmarks yet, but I would imagine the 6750M is going to be better than the 330M for gaming.

The 6750M is based on the desktop 5570 architecture and it's similar to the 5650M, 5770M, etc., but updated with GDDR5. The fact that this card has 1GB vram is great as well for this purpose and there are a lot of non-gaming tasks that can benefit from more vram. It's definitely not a top-tier laptop video card, but it's not the bottom of the barrel either.

The 6490M is another new card without benchmarks, but it looks to be an entry level video card updated with GDDR5. And 256MB is pitiful.

I'm also concerned that the full potential of certain Adobe CS5 apps seems to be only unlocked with NVIDIA cards, if I understand correctly.

What exactly you will use lightpeak for??? There is "zero" products out there. HDDs are not fast enough to fully take advantage of the bandwidth, so what is left?

For how long do you keep your laptops? My c2d died 2 /12 months out of its AppleCare warranty about a month ago, otherwise I'd still be happily chugging along on it. It's my second computer after my Mac Pro and it does (did) everything I needed it to.

I just called Apple this morning to return my 2 week old replacement MBP, and am happy to apparently see LightPeak in my new MBP as I plan to keep it for several years. In 2-4 years I'm sure there will be a lot of peripherals out that use Thunderbolt/LightPeak and I'll be glad I have it built in.

you guys whine and complain about dual cores.... now that you get quad cores you whine and complain about battery life  what did you expect? honestly... wow.

High res is still an option.

I would be fine with the downgrade in battery life if I could get a higher res screen on the MBP13.. but when the only upgrade from the last gen is a better processor, I dont know if its worth a 3h decrease in battery life.. :/ Im conflicted. I was really hoping for a higher res screen.

not sure if i really need/want 1680-by-1050 on a 15 rather than just the standard 1440 by 900 pixels ????. pretty sure on anti-glare. guess i will just have to get down to a store and look.

you'll want the higher res for playing blu-rays...oh wait, never mind

I'm still in shock that the 13" PRO didnt get a display upgrade, and the macbook air got the upgrade back in november. incredibly sad :(

Both of these were released January 4, 2011, not sure how tried and true that is, and if you think that is, then there are like 10 better AMD's released the same day they could have used.

I don't know how many GPUs are available to OEMs at the moment, but there are certainly more than 10 GPUs which outclass these leaked specs.

According to NotebookCheck.net, the Radeon HD 6490M is ranked at #117, below the current 330M (#93), and the Radeon HD 6750M is ranked at #60. This will be even worse if Apple underclocks these. Check out these links: benchmarks, info on 6490M, and info on 6750M.

I also agree with those who say that 256MB is too little VRAM; 512MB should be standard. It does appear that Apple marketing (i.e., battery life) has trumped practicality (i.e., need for more powerful GPUs). I wonder how the switchable graphics will work? Do we need to logoff again or has Apple written firmware to manage this? AMD/ATI does have something similar to NVidia's Optimus technology (I read about it yesterday, but I forget the exact term), but it is not widely touted.

i don't know what to get now, i need a machine and was planning on a 13" pro with upgraded screen.

Bump for question from people who've been in the Apple game (my last was the Powerbook G4)

How do these releases typically work? Here are my questions if someone could kindly help me out.

1.) Are these new models typically available on launch day? (aka can I walk into the Apple store or Best Buy and buy one TODAY.
2.) What do they do with the old models? I think these prices are ridiculous for the 15's and 17's...do they lower the prices on the old ones? Maybe I'll pick up a loaded 15'' 2010 model if so.

I had my credit card in hand ready to by a new MBP 15" but the lack of hires by default is making me rethink..... I think I might just wait for the next MBA

Same here, somewhat of a letdown. $300 for a CPU upgrade really, for me. I'm yanking the 5400 drive out anyway so I'm likely to just buy the low model and call it a day.

If the next refresh is a redesign, I'll likely sell this thing and at least I didn't have to spend a fortune for a new MPB.

Hopefully the resolution is BTO, but doubtful at this point. Bah

The 7200rpm drive I put into my macbook lasted for 3 days. A slight bump was enough to damage it permanently. I think that to stick to 5200rpm is not a bad choice in a laptop. Desktop is, of course, a different story.

That's an anecdote. Here's another anecdote: I've had 4 7200rpm drives in Apple laptops, and I've never had one fail. I have, however, had a 5400rpm drive fail.

5400rpm drives suck and fail! 7200rpm drives are reliable!

There you go ;)

No way you would hear difference between 5400 - 7200, and correct me if im wrong, but i believe the MBP already had 7200.
They should most def. be able to match the MBA screenresolution on the 13" MBP

I downgraded from a 7200 to a 5400 because it was so much noisier

for people like me this will also be useful.

Does noone else think Apple aren't just being conservative with their battery life estimates?

Everyone moans when they don't get 10 hours on their MBPs - this could just be a tactical move (plus taking a bit off for the speed increase...)

You're right. It even says so on the web site. They're claiming 7 hours for the new battery, and state that they are using more rigorous testing for batteries, and that the new laptops get the same length on a charge as the previous one.

I have a two week old MBP here (returning it) and I certainly never got anything close to 9 hours out of it. Maybe 5.5 hours if I wasn't doing anything too taxing.
