This is disgusting. How very Microsoft of them.

Nature abhors a vacuum. Just as Apple slips, another player will enter the market and take all the business of people who will pay for them to "do it right". See what Steam is developing as an example.
Yeah, SteamOS isn’t going to grab any users outside of gaming. Ubuntu is the only viable Linux for everyone else, not a gaming-centric OS. Android would only gain as well.

The fact people are completely trusting of Gabe is a bit alarming to me. I think he enjoys the worship he gets while he builds his super yacht army and counts his personal billions.

You're assigning a world of intentionally shady behavior to Apple just for leaving a selection box checked.
Apple has repeatedly demonstrated shady behavior. Occam’s razor suggests we go with the simplest explanation, which is that they’re continuing to do exactly what they’ve been doing

I, in fact, didn’t untick the Tahoe option. I simply clicked the ‘download now’ button in the Sequoia section. Once that was complete, I updated Safari the same way.
It took me a while to get round to this, as I was concerned for a while - having clicked the ‘i’ button and been confused by the ticked selections shown. I put it off until yesterday.

Yes, if you click the ‘i’ button in the Sequoia section, it will take you to a dialogue box where Tahoe is ticked and Sequoia not. If you untick Tahoe and return to the updates page, all might seem well.
But then the Sequoia update begins, and is almost 3 times the stated size, and alarm bells go off in your head.
Fact is, every time you click the ‘i’ button in both sections, the Tahoe option is ticked. Untick then return, and click ‘i’, and it will appear ticked again.
BUT, until you actually click in the Tahoe dialogue section of the main update page - you will not get the Tahoe update.
I hope this clears up any confusion. There is no skullduggery. If wary, then don’t have auto-update selected.
My issue is just that the Sequoia update was much bigger than stated, and the upload size was so staggeringly suspect.

I too noticed the sudden increase in the download size of Sequoia 15.7.3, from 1.2 to 4.8 GB. Did not monitor the upload activity, but wish I had.

If you or anyone figures out why this occurred, I'd really appreciate knowing.

No-one here will know. Only guesses. I wonder how big the Tahoe upgrade really is, once it gets going?

Someone mentioned the word “Paranoia”, and this is understandable.
But just because I’m paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not all looking at me.
Does this division in the ranks happen every year now?
It doesn’t matter to me anyway. I work offline 100% on my Mac.

What does matter to me is that scientists have noticed that with the filling of a monster triple dam in China - the poles of the Earth have shifted 2cm. A speed decrease in orbit of 0.02%.
So we’re going to fall into the sun anyway. It won’t be next week. It might not be next year.
But it will certainly be before I upgrade my Mac M4 again.

"Isn't going to grab any users in outside of gaming-" yet. They won't grab them yet. Because they don't compete in that space.

I'm just saying nothing is permanent, even Apple. If they fall from grace and don't "do it right" then a company will see the opportunity and move in to that area. All I'm saying. The valve thought was just an example.

These threads are always good for shrill hysteria and paranoia. Generally the "dark pattern" phrase is a good tipoff to what's coming next.

I didn't do the "defer" profile mentioned by OP when they reference a previous thread they also started, why would I use that method instead of using the tools that Apple already provides? I already have the option to not automatically download/install software. It's under my control as a user. So perhaps this is all relevant only to those who turn over their system software updates to Apple (I'm sure there are many of them, possibly a majority of users), but, as @macaddiict mentions, the sky is not falling.

When I go to System Settings and check my "Software Update" options (I'm running 15.7.1) I can go to 15.7.3 OR Tahoe (26.2), those are my options and it's up to me. It's really clear what I'm getting if I want to upgrade my OS version. I use my eyes and I pay attention to what I'm asking the settings menu to do.

If people aren't paying attention to what they're asking their upgrade settings to do, this isn't Apple being evil, it's because people are clicking pretty important buttons without giving enough thought to the results.

I have all kinds of sympathy for those people, though. I have a friend who is still angry that he had automatic updates turned on, and now he's stuck with a Music app he dislikes. But anyone who just upgrades system software without paying attention, I'm sorry for you but that's on you.

And no, I don't think Apple is uploading gigs and gigs of my personal data for their unspecified but clearly very nefarious reasons* when I update software. When I read that sort of post my first thought is always "why would they?" So I see those posts and take it with a laugh and a grain of salt, then go back to reading what's here that may be rooted in reality. There is good advice as well as bad advice in these forums, it really pays to not freak out about everything you read, especially when it seems like someone is trying to get you to freak out over a thing that doesn't even apply to you.

Nope, Give me Monterey or Windows10 for me!
My old Air – which I don't use much and is now stuck on Sonoma – downloads the Monterey install to /Applications about once a month. No idea why. No idea how to stop it. It's probably a sign: a message from the universe. At 13Gb, I'm glad I'm not on metered usage. At the same time, it's nudging me to update to 14.8.3.

DO IT!

how old is the macbook air?
Monterey for me saved my love for  computers I just realized.
as far as that situation i'm not that TECH to reply a remedy.
though if you do try to install Monterey, the MBA will let you know after 38 minutes of chugging,
YOU CANT INSTALL THIS OS since that is more recent.

As a somewhat recent PC gaming convert, it is strange why so many people just blindly trust Valve, as if they aren’t a for-profit company.

Heh! If it was Mavericks, I might be tempted. It's the 2018 Air: the wedge-shaped, retina model, with the butterfly keyboard, which I love, the terrible 480 camera, and the insanely stupid two USB-C ports and no other connectivity – Ive deserved his ejection. I doubt there are many of these out there, but I'm kinda fond of it.

You didn’t say if you were on Tahoe or not. Lol

Would you kindly share your reasons why?

Meaning, why haven't I updated yet?

I haven't updated to 15.7.3 on this machine because I'm usually very slow to update it. It's my production machine and I need to make sure all my software and processes work with it.

I have an MBA that I'm running 15.7.3 on, it's more or less my "test" machine, and less critical to me. Things are going fine so far.

I'm staying away from Tahoe entirely until they fix some issues that I have with parts of it, like the Music app.

Tahoe and the bundled Safari were officially released with 20 known security issues.
Let that sink in.
Let this sink in: "Because of dependency on architecture and system changes to any current version of Apple operating systems (for example, macOS 26, iOS 26, and so on), not all known security issues are addressed in previous versions (for example, macOS 15, iOS 18, and so on)."

Cheers for that.
I’m not sure about Apple Music. I transferred all my CD’s to the Mac. I’m convinced there is weird ‘spaciality’ going on. I have a very revealing sound system. It might just be upsampling? It certainly dances around a bit.
I must try a different App, that is more straightforward, and retains 16-bit/44.1Khz.
I’ll redo the transfers. Hope my Superdrive works on the Mini M4, but have MacBooks if not.
Might even use my Win 10 PC to get the Wav’s. Yes, I’ve read about Tahoe’s Music App.

My music production software is Cubase 14. A very poorly released Cubase 15 is available, but apparently Tahoe is a nightmare with that. Usually 6 months to a year before anything gets done.
I’m happy to sit on Sequoia and Cubase 14, and enjoy full-functionality/glitch-free working - but I was extremely happy with Monterey and Cubase 12. Happier in fact. Except for scant headroom on a 2015 MacBook Pro i7.

I upgraded Cubase because of the yearly sale, and wanting a product licence I could sell easily were I to change software maker. They changed to online validation too, so had no choice. But Cubase 14 wanted Sequoia to run, and that was when I bought the M4 Mini.

Off topic I know, but this shows how I was forced/coerced into this position. Positive upgrades there, but Tahoe would be the actions of a musical masochist!

I work 100% offline on my M4 Mini. Music Software updates and downloads are by using a virus-checked pen-drive on a sacrificial Monterey MacBook Pro. I keep an iPad for financial business/purchases, an iPhone for internet tethering, and a Win 10 PC for gaming.
But thanks for the info.
My update to 15.7.3 was a rare move for me, and required online connection. I would hope I could trust Apple there. Safari remains unused. But I can soon revert back to a safe, uncompromised 15.7.1 if I wish. I have a drive-image copy sitting here waiting.

BUT, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, and Sequoia’s major threats are fully addressed in their updates, for now.
For Tahoe, it’s all the threats they know of - until another 3rd party after a job decides to breach it again.
Keep your internet though. It’s just a convenient novelty to me - one big game. A joke of a game in which the badly potty-trained outpourings of a keyboard-stabbing complete moron can share the same page as a studiously continent Nobel Peace Prize winner.
