if you have a glossy right now and doesn't bother you, then I would go that route and get the accessory. The Matte screen is what I have had for years. This Bobby guy has some personal issue with people that like the Matte screen.

The colours are fine. They aren't as crazy over saturated as the glossy screen and isn't as bright (full brightness), but that doesn't bother me. I am on the move all the time and as someone stated before, the lighting is NOT the same everywhere, and with summer coming soon...

Do you have a PC at home? More than likely, it has a Matte (or anti-glare) monitor, atleast my girlfriends' Dell XPS does. If you are mobile, the Matte is fine. And the non-sense that the text appears as hieroglyphics is rubbish. The text is smaller, but I would think the text would be the same size on the hi-res glossy as they are both 1600x1050 (or whatever it is).

Anti-glare is more comfortable to use and easier to the eyes in long sessions - at least for me. I can work for 6 hours straight on my AG Macbook Pro but get eyestrain in just 2 and a half when using my 21 iMac.

i think the OP should go and see if glossy bothers him or her and if it doesn't than he should get glossy high res.

or if he likes the anti glare more than the glossy he should get the AG.

ultimately our opinions mean absolutely nothing. The OP's opinion is all that matters

Dude, I've seen them at the store side by side.

Are you blind. Look at them. The AG looks duller.

If anyone thinks they look equally good they are insane.

I have been to store and that's how I made my decision to go with anti-glare instead of glossy. Took all of about 2 minutes to decide which one *I* prefer. At the end of the day it's personal preference.

I ordered a 15" MBP with a high-res anti-glare screen two weeks ago. The leasing company now has it ready to ship, only it has a high-res glossy screen. Apple's mistake. They are offering me a free accessory to take the glossy screen, or a 2+ week wait to have it sent back and get the anti-glare screen that I ordered.

In my opinion you should wait for the 15" MBP with high-res anti-glare screen you ordered and the accessory they offered you should be a token of apology for the error on their part.

I have no way of getting to an Apple store to compare. My current MacBook has a glossy screen and it bothers me only occasionally.

I know that this is a very subjective thing, but I thought I would ask for some opinions from those who have experienced both screens. Might it be worth waiting a bit longer to get the anti-glare screen? Or would glossy do just fine with a free bluetooth trackpad thrown in?

Cheers
Cams

If you have white macbook the MBP glossy will be a huge upgrade, it's just much better.
I had a AG Macbook Pro before, but when mine died the store only had glossy ones, and since I couldn't afford to wait I took a glossy one.
In the start it did bother me a bit, but now i think it is ok.
I would buy a AG screen if I bought a new one.

That said, I do have an external monitor which is matte (Eizo 2231) and the MBP is clearly inferior

Ag

AG definitely! it is definitely better, for me anyway.
easy on eyes, no reflection.
not dull at all btw, and more "real" (in that it represents colors more truly compared to glossy)

The leasing company persuaded me to try the glossy, since they had it anyway and it would be 3 weeks plus for them to get an anti glare. It just arrived this morning, and I knew within five minutes that it just wouldn't do. So it's going back. And now the wait starts all over again :(

Good choice! Sucks about the wait though, are they giving you anything for all this trouble?

AG for sure :) i had both and i must say yeah glossy is shiny and nice but after few hours of use.... i was sick of it... always to switch place because of lamps, sun etc.... now i have AG and yeeesss the colors look less shiny but who cares.... if you are a Hi-End Photographer or a Hi-End Designer you won't work on a MBP you will afford a Mac Pro :p

You made the right decision. Not saying anti glare > glossy as it's personal preference, but glad you stuck to your original choice. Yeah the additional wait sucks, but what's 3 weeks compared to the years you will be using the machine. As for the accessory, I recommend the bluetooth keyboard.

Both are viewable in non extreme lighting conditions. I have both 2011 15inch glossy and anti glare before i returned the glossy.

IMO, glossy is slightly better colours (vibrant) than glare (NOT BY MUCH!!!).
The glare is useful only if moderate lighting conditions kicks in. In extreme lightings, both glossy and glare looks ugly (non readable from normal viewing distance).

I have been living with 2010 15inch glossy for a year and i made a switch because i fell in love with the silver bezel on the anti glare. its does looks more classy and suit in the whole unibody design (silver around the black keyboards, silver around the black lcd? anyone agree?)

While the black bezel glass covering the glossy sure looks cool too (unique like iphone, ipad black - dont have words to describe it sorry)

Like everyone said, i agree with them, YOU CANT go wrong with eithe rof them. They are of still good image quality screen compare to a lot of other PC laptops and older model Macbooks.

Cant adapt glare on glossy screen, wash out on glare, choose this over that, and bla bla bla...these are all not a good reason to choose the screen after i have experienced both. Its all up to personal preference on how your MAC you wanna look like when using.

Does not matter how many pros and cons about the screen, choose what your heart tells you (like said, you wont go wrong with either ones)

Completely false.

I don't prefer most LCD TVs because of their unnatural cartoon "blown out" colors.

This is why I generally choose plasma for their rich warm details. I have Pioneer Elite Pro-151FD's and know what a "Natural" picture looks like.

And guess what, the plasma has a glass screen. Although, the coating is far superior on the plasma. This goes to show if your going to use glass, it takes good engeneering & R&D to make it work best for the application at hand. I'm sure Apple will continue to work on this, but it's just not there yet. Pioneer has been out of the Plasma game for 2+ years! Still to this date manufactures are trying to beat sets they sold 3+ years ago. Now that's making it work right.

Also, neither one of these screens are top notch, but I can tell you that the AG is tamable where the glassy is not.

You are the type of person that also probably tends to choose the TV on the showroom floor with the highest blue push. This is classic for a non videophile.

When I went and compared an anti-glare to the glossy, I really wanted to like the glossy (as I'm sick of the anti-glossy whiners, and I also like the black bezel) but to me the anti-glare screen just looks so much better. I didn't notice any difference in colour brightness, but I certainly did notice the reflections.

So, I bought the anti-glare screen, and absolutely love it. I would recommend paying the extra for it to anyone.

If you want your colours to be brighter, make yourself a new colour profile in System Preferences. It's very easy to do, and the results are great.

I have an aluminum MB (obviously with glossy) and just got a 15" MBP with HR AG. First, I love the high resolution. I've had this computer for less than a week and find the alu MB annoying to use because of its low res. The AG (for me) is so much better than the glossy. The colors are plenty vibrant and I don't find it "blurry" at all. While there may in theory be some blurriness inherent to the AG surface (due to scatter of incident photons) it's definitely below human perception, or at least mine. The colors are beautiful and the viewing angles are much better than my old alu MB. In a room that's lit, I can actually see the screen and in a room that's dark, the reflection from the backlit keys doesn't drive me nuts.

I honestly can't see an eventuality which would lead me to ever go back to a glossy screen.

Antiglare will give a less honest picture because the same stuff that makes it prevent glare also makes it look blurry and harder to see. It's not worth ruining that beautiful screen fir something that doesn't even pose an issue.
This is bad information, simply a matter of conjecture.

Professional laptops have used anti glare for years.

A reflective glass cover was added by Apple simply because shiny toys sell. Those new to laptops just don't know any better.

That said one may find them suitable for movies. For work not so much.

I'm an anti-glare guy, but I don't understand all of this gloss hate. The reflections are honestly not as bad as people are making it out to be. I started out with the hi-res antiglare, but I could not adjust to the hi-resolution, so I returned it and got the standard res gloss.

The reflections are not that noticeable. Usually the things that you are working with are with a white background, and you are focusing on your work, so you're not focused on the reflections. When I switched at first, the reflections annoyed me. But after a week, I don't really notice it anymore.

When it's all said and done, go for whatever your comfortable with. There is no right or wrong answer, it's just a preference.

AG/Glossy is truly a personal preference. I have both, and don't mind either, but I generally prefer buying AG.

Pros and cons are again, IMHO, subjective ... and are important or not, based on one's preferences!

I prefer the antiglare display. I think the key to correct color representation is using a hardware calibrator.

Countless people have asked me why their pictures never turn out the way they see it on the screen; this with both glossy and antiglare owners alike.

I spend a couple minutes using my calibrator on their machine and the results are pretty much the same. They get WYSIWYG results.

The antiglare is easier to see and you don't really see many reflections (but when there is a strong light source, it will refract a lot and you won't be able to see anything). The other hand, glossy is a piece of glass over the LCD panel; makes it easy to clean without risk of pressing on the panel and I guess protects it a bit more.

Not wishing to stir up another hornets' nest, I just wanted to pop in and say that the non-glossy MBP arrived this week and I am so glad that I stuck to my guns and didn't keep the glossy one. It works so much better in my office, where we have fluorescent lighting. I'm not saying that it's for everyone, but having tried both, I'm happy with the matte!

Thanks everyone for your input. It really was useful.

I agree. It just took me weeks to figure it out and 4 trips to the Apple Store

Chocolate ice cream or vanilla?

We could fight about this all day, but you won't know until you go into a store and give it a try. Personally, I much prefer the glossy screen. I spend long hours on my computer every day and it has never bothered me in the slightest with eyestrain or anything like that. It is completely a matter of preference.
