They did it twice, once in 09 and the other in 06...

January '06 was the launch of the MacBook Pro, they were updated for the first time on October 26 2006.

The Jan 2009 update was preceded by the first unibody machines being launched in... October 2008.

They might update in Jan or Feb (or even April) occasionally, but like clockwork they've also been updated this time of year.

'reg.' is an abbreviation for 'regular'. But yeah; this pricing from Apple is outrageous.

It looks like Apple is waiting for Sandy Bridge. That suits me fine. I'm waiting for Ivy Bridge because entry level chips will be native quad core and Intel have hinted that they're making such good progress on their 22nm process that they may be able to start shipping by Q3 of 2011. USB 3.0 should be commonplace by then too.

Agreed, If you can wait, then waiting for Ivy Bridge makes a lot of sense. Sandy bridge, although a step forward, is the last of the current design. However Ivy moves the fabrication process forward and introduces more cores as standard. Intel reckon we'll have them Q2/Q3 next year. If that time line bears out then I think this time next year we'll have just had an apple event introducing the new Macbook Pro design, along with the introduction of the new Ivy Bridge processors.

Actually they said latter half of 2011 so I'd suspect Q3 or Q4

Must have something next April

Just so. I was rather hoping that a decent faster 13" MacBook Pro was on the way, as I will need a new machine next April but an 11" Air with the faster processor would do. Not perfect, though.

With Sandy Bridge you will get a faster 13". They cannot still go with Core 2 Duo because Intel will not want to make high enough volumes anymore I guess. Also the new Intel Graphics is about as fast as the old 9400M which should be more than enough.
In case it is still not enough they will put a third chip in but I doubt they can still stick with Sandy Bridge, also Clock for Clock and Perfromance/watt will be significantly better and Jobs cannot say anymore that it is a minor boost that is not worth the GPU sacrifice.

But if history teaches anything than don't hope for the new MBP to show up too soon. While 32nm is major thus it will be a month sooner or 2. I will not be before end of Feb. and more likely March.

The only thing I am really interested in is a new 15" with more VRAM and a new much better GPU (AMD please). That is where there is real potential for improvement. Nobody who gets a corei5 now will have any reason to switch to Sandy Bridge they won't be much faster and battery life will not improve all that much either and it is still only gonna be 2 Cores.

I'm pretty disappointed about the lack of updates on the 13" MBP too. My company, on my advice, is waiting to buy new MacBooks for us all. We're predominantly mobile, the 15" MBPs are great but too heavy. We want the 13" model, but it's now looking like distinctly old hardware inside and needs an update. Ditto for the bigger models too, really.

I think we'll wait for a couple more weeks to be sure.

I think it will be a few months at best, I am waiting for a 13-inch upgrade too.

I don't absolutely need a new laptop now but I also wonder if it's worth waiting more. When can a refresh be expected again?

Yup... I'll be waiting for the MBP refresh of Q1 2011. I could buy now, but my original MacBook Air is still going decently. I'll wait so I can get more for my money. :D

Not in need for an MBP now so still waiting for sandy bridge so the step up will be worth it.

Apple's price in hardware is absolutely outrageous these days. And also, remember when Apple used top of the line graphics? Yeah, that was a while ago. But they fell wayyy down with that now didn't they. See, before I got my iMac for $1500, I could have gotten a 21.5" Dell TOUCH SCREEN WIRELESS MOUSE AND KEYBOARD INCLUDED for just $850!

It's simply outrageous.

You can't argue with that, unless you have all the money in the world. *Ahem, Mr. Steve Jobs*

you don't compare "Apples to Apples" you are right Appel is very expansive but you get higher price when you sell.
and Dell thats not something that I will buy.
this is my 1st Appel mbp and I like it alot, I miss WIN so I add it to the mbp
the IBM laptops I used to buy every 3 years the price was around $3000.00 and hardly get $500.00 when I sold it.

Should I buy or should I not buy. You buy when you need to. And I needed to, so I purchased the 2.66 i7 rather than the 2.8 because I will probably upgrade to 8 GB of RAM (only purchased it with 4GB) and i will get a lot more bang for my buck that way. I can't really see the difference between the performance on my i7 2.66 and my neighbor's i7 2.8.

The only question.. Do I buy Apple RAM or third-party RAM?????

The 13 inch Macbook Pro is a mistake, in my opinion.
When you look at the hardware, the interfaces, the resolution, there is nothing pro about those machines. They're simply aluminum Macbooks.

The pro line, aimed towards power users and designers, has features to support just that. When I'm doing my designing in illustrator or photoshop, or editing pictures in lightroom, I'd rather not have pathetic screen real estate and resolution when doing so.

So for people to complain that the 13" MBP isn't getting any love, there is a reason for that, because it should have never have came out. But instead of keeping the aluminum macbooks, they slapped pro on the case and decided to cash in.

Apple will give the 13" love in limited quanitites because the real designers and power users, and therefor the real profit and target audience, dont use them.

But the pro moniker lets apple get away with even more warped marketing! MacBook Pros can now start at $1199!
