The vast majority of people don't need a SD card slot. I use SD cards for Raspberry Pi and as extra storage for handheld game consoles, but I have no need for a permanent slot on my Mac.

Let's assume your "vast majority" is true.

Discrimination to minority is morally unacceptable in 21st century

Wow. I suppose you also want a fold out desk fan and built-in coffee dispenser?

The whole point of the Air is that it keeps things simple. If you want all these extra slots and ports, that’s what the Pro is for.

If a fold out desk and and built-in coffee dispenser can perfectly fit in to that slim body, why not?

SDXC card is slim than a USB-c port. Given 14 inch can perfectly accommodate it, Why not?

What a stptd claim. Just don't buy it. Who forces you? I have a MILC cam with an SDXC card and I don't need that slot. A fast USB-C connection does the trick. Where's the issue?

Your claim is equally stptd. Did I say anyone forces someone?

If you are from North Korean, note down 2 words: Free speech

Be my guest if you are willing to make rooms for USB-C cables in your bag next time when you travel back to North Korean.

This isn’t complicated: it’s impossible to satisfy everybody with one laptop model. Some of us want it to be minimal, others want all possible options.

This is the MacbookAir - the pursuit of lightness above all else (though the tradeoffs have gotten less and less over the years). Most people won't need dongles and they certainly won't need them on the road. But fortunately the MBPs offer more ports for those who need them.

And please spare us the North Korea and free speech crap, we are talking about the design of a luxury laptop.

Haha. Funny.

There is no way the 15" MBA is coming with a SD card slot. I dislike the fact my Max has an SD and HDMI slot on it, but I have to accept they are there and just get on with it.

It will be interesting to see how light they can bring in these new machines. I'd personally wait for the M3 as I think the 3nm chip will do wonders for the efficiency of it and therefore keep it cooler as I doubt it comes with a fan.

I (sarcasm alert) am not gonna buy a M3 that’s hamstrung in a laptop. I am a power user so I’ll need the M3 to be in desktop machine with a thick power cord that has to always stay plugged in to my expensive UPS to get the pro desktop power I need. And it’ll need to be in a large case with lots of airflow for cooling, with loud fans to prove it’s going fast.

It makes sense to put the M2, but it is also kind of pointless. I guess this fills the void of a cheaper, large screen MacBook as the larger MBPs are overkill for most users.

You ask "Why not?" The answer is, because MBA is the low end. Thinner and lighter, sure., but all the many folks here wanting high end features (high RAM, display support, extra ports, etc.) while maintaining thin/light and low price are being unrealistic.

Sure the efficiency of Apple's SoC may allow the MBA to bloat up on features and price, but if that were to happen then a new laptop model (MBA light?) for the low end would be needed.

Or at least M3 value products (like MBA) are a ways away.
Or M3 products period. Apple is not in the same hurry to advance Mac chips as customers are. The M1 and its variants ran for 2 years before the first M2 product surfaced.

Coupled with the fact that M3 is expected to be the first 3nm chip for Mac, there really is no timetable here.

It will be:
- Faster
- More efficient - which means longer battery life
- Support for more memory

You might say, but the target user for this form factor doesn't need this. But the fact is, it an option if at purchase you might want a little bit more horse power or memory. Case in point, the Air comes started with 8 GBs of RAM, but you upgrade to 16 or 24 GBs. Or the Mac Mini has an option for an M2 Pro.
Wrong. M2 MBA SoC could already now easily be capable of a little bit more horse power or memory if Apple chose to position the MBA as a stronger pricier box. But MBA is the low end.

Sure the future M3 generation will be stronger, because tech moves forward. But MBA does not somehow need M3. Better to speed bump MBAs with M2's far better yields/vakue in a few months.

Waiting/wanting M3 chips to magically make MBAs no longer be the low end is wrong-headed thinking IMO unless Apple were to create a new low end as it bloated up the MBA.

I use SD regularly with my cameras, I'll take a slot over another USB port.
I use CFExpress (and some much, much slower SD) regularly with my cameras. I far prefer a fully capable TB4 port over an easily-dongled.limited utility SD card slot. It is not about another low-bandwidth USB port.
