Maybe at this point in the refresh cycle it's a little pricy, but once they are refreshed, 1799 for the base model is a decent price point.
1699 would be even better though. :p

You shouldn't complain, in the UK the 15" starts at £1,530! (nearly $2,500 at current exchange rate).

That's right. For us in Britain it's cheaper to fly to NY, buy an MBP and stuff and still have money left to spend! I think as for petrol (gas) we are charged extra so that our US cousins can buy cheaper  But if we buy i, tn the US, then we probably lose out on the service when we get back home.
But, still, even so US prices are steep for what Mac offers. ;)

I still don't get why the same computer as the MacBook Pro 15 is only about $1,200 or less from most makers with faster hardware, but the MBP15 is starting at $1,699.

Is that $500 just for the aluminum case?

You pay extra for Petrol because your government taxes the living crap out of it...you must also realize we in the US buy a helluva a lot more oil than England. Volume ordering I'm sure gets a small discount like with anything in life. Purely speculation on volume pricing but I would be shocked to hear we pay the same as countries that hardly order as much

Reasons I am willing to pay more for a MBP than a comparably speced windows computer:

  • case
  • overall sleekness
  • trackpad
  • display quality
  • OS:X

*shrug*

I was looking for a laptop that had high build quality and was enjoyable to use. Using a MBP makes me cry when I use non-Apple laptops, so in a way, I succeeded.

I'll spend 4-10 hours a day for the next three years probably using this comptuer for personal/work/school so I definitely found it worthit to spend an extra few hundred (hell even if it is 2x) to get something I enjoy using vs have to use.

Yes, 15 inch MBP is too expensive. I don't understand why.

13 MBP starts at 1199 dollars.

And then all of sudden 15 inch MBP

goes for 1799 dollars. Why?

I just don't understand why 15 inch costs so much more than 13 inch.

Get used to Apple Tax.

It isn't too expensive.

Not too long ago you'd pay $2,300-3,000 for an equivalent 15" PowerBook.

It's not only about the specs, it's about the experience. And I know I wouldn't get the same experience from a computer with the same specs but a plastic case.

There are a few things in my Macbook Pro that I consider essential and aren't standard on most PC laptops. For example, the ambient light sensor and backlit keyboard. If the computer can't adjust the display brightness automatically, it's incomplete.

Because if Apple still charged that for the level of performance you get now then no one would buy them.

You mean a hot lap, hot palm wrest, edges that people complain cut their wrists, and a machine that dents and scratches and inorder to replace said dent is rather pricy? Are you saying that MacBook and 13in MacBook Pro users have a totally different experience? Also there are other aluminum and magnesium based laptops round, that cost less.

Back Lit Keyboards are typically a $25 option and I personally turn ambient lighting off, along with my back lit keyboard. The screen constantly changing when a person stops in the light annoys my eyes, and if you are a decent typist you shouldn't be looking at the keys anyway.

Apples biggest pro is that they manage 10hr battery(partly by under clocking their already midrange graphics card), and that they have rather nice displays. Both of which others ar coming up on fast.

$1,120 for 40gigabytes

Dud, in 1994 I bought a PowerBook Duo 210 laptop with... 40MB memory. And it cost me £700, that's around $1,120! For 40 megabytes!
And guess what? It had much more user friendly window or folders.

Its bs. Apple has lower costs and higher profit rates than other companies and still overcharge. But there are people willing to pay so they will continue to get away with it.

i just think the OP wants more buying options.

currently

13" - c2d 2.4 1199
13" - c2d 2.6 1499
15" - i5 1799
15" - i7
etc

if and when they introduce the sb i3 processors, they should provide the high end i3 option to the 15" model, to fill that gap.

so

13" - i3 2.1 - 1199
13" - i3 2.3 - 1399
15" - i3 2.3 - 1599
15" - i5...etc - 1799

That 1599 price point would be for people who want/need the screen size over the processor speed. If they need both, then go up. Simple. Some of you made a mountain out of a molehill.

bought the i5 last april...only thing i think it should come with standard is SSD
