Im only going to say this one more time on this forum - so make sure the rest of you echo this into future threads.

The 8th gen Intel processors make clicking / coil sounds, regardless of manufacturer. HPs do it, Dells do it.

If you don't want that noise buy a 6th gen processor - maybe a 7th. My dual core 2016 nTB is absolutely silent proving once again - 2016 nTB master race.

That is simply wrong. Coil whine generally comes from the larger components on a board, like power regulators, inductors and things with actual coils. The components in a CPU/SoC are generally way, way too small to cause coil whine. Also, the noise is coming from the very top-left of the cases (where a lot of the power regulation and I/O is located). The CPU is nowhere near there, it's right in the middle.

It seems that it only occurs with the external display attached. I have to do more tests...

I have a 4K Dell monitor, and yes, the fans are annoying. Getting loud after just some YouTube playback, big downloads and general use with multiple apps. It seems like the added cores and the dGPU is too hot for the form factor. Have the 2.2GHz base line. Currently looking for alternatives, maybe waiting for an iMac or Mac Mini, but I don't know if any of those machines will have some of the same problems as the MacBook Pro or the iMac Pro...

With the new supplemental update that just came out today, are the fans quieter when the computer is at the load you were describing?

I can't really say as I'm waiting for a replacement machine, but without this update there was loud fans during small operations weeks after "indexing."

Have you a MBP 2018 with this update?

I don't think the fans were changed, either they run slower (quieter) or they don't. If they run quieter Apple either is letting things get warmer or they slowed the CPU down further to reduce the heat.

I'm not seeing any reduction in heat, on my tasks, but that doesn't mean under duress it will be just as hot.

I'm using Macs Fan Control and set up a profile to ramp up fans at 65 and max at 85 and for me that offers a nice balance of thermal management and noise.
