The key to what size you need, to me, really depends on your movie/TV habits. Since the OP is not going to use the iPad for videos, a 16gb should be fine. But it only takes a few movies and TV shows to fill up a 16gb iPad. Yes, you can download from iCloud the movies you purchased from iTunes, but that can be a pain, and any movies you burned to your computer yourself are not on iCloud.

Yes performance wise they are very similar but if you do lots of reading then the iPad 3 wins hands down.

This has been my personal debate as well. I have a 64gb iPad 2 and it's used almost daily from games to books. I've heard that gaming performance is only a marginal improvement but reading and web browsing is an obvious win.

Of the many reviews I've read, most stated that if you were still rocking the first gen, upgrading is a no-brainer, iPad 2 owners should upgrade depending on your needs. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, finding a demo unit is tough and new products always have a few growing pains.

The main hassle is I'd have to sell my current iPad 2, but either deal with "feeBay" or dozens of cheapskates on craigslist...

It is all depend on how many or size of med apps you plan to install? 16GB or 32GB Some game apps are bigger than others so you have to decide.

The largest med app is medscape (about 400 Mb). All my games are less than 100 Mb. I keep apps i never use on my phone. As long as I don't do that on the ipad, i guess 16 GB should be enough.

Try both and see what you like:

Ipad 2 pro's over the third is it's lighter, thinner and charges in less time.

Ipad 3 has a better screen, IOS6 should run better on the new processor, the camera is very good downside is a longer charge and some minor issues people are having like when a new product is released.

Safe option is an Ipad 2. If you can't wait and enjoy the latest product and the amazing retina then the third generation it is. :)

There's really nothing out there to suggest that is true. Performance wise the A5 and A5X are a wash. Any additional power from the A5X is spent on the graphics side running the new screen.

Like others have suggested go for the New iPad. I think for your needs 16GB should be fine. Worse comes to worse you'll just have to manage your content. The high resolution display makes a significant difference as does the quad core GPU and the 1GB of RAM.
