For the quad core i5 which is not set on MBP series yes.
But the i5 dual core for MBP 13in (aka i5-2410M) no.
They only support 8GB max.

So does the dual core i7 I think.
The 13in dual core i7 (aka i7-2620M) only supports up to 8GB

Only the quad core types can hold up to 16GB such as the i7 quad on 15 and 17in models (aka i7-2620QM, i7-2720QM, and i7-2820QM).

edit:
QM stands for "quad mobile". Its a quad core mobile processor for laptops.
M just stands for mobile. Which is a dual core processor for laptops.

Thanx for the clear up :D you think the next mbp 13inch will be quad or is that physically not possible?

Beware, 2630QM which is the 2.0Ghz Quad Core in the base 15" do not support 16GB and 1600Mhz RAM.

again, I just keep going back to OWC - they state ALL 2011 models can recognize AND utilize 16GBs of RAM.

In fact, I just chatted with a tech and he confirmed the above statement.

You can also check out this link - it too backs up OWC's claim about all 2011 MBPs

I'm going old school.

Only way to know is to try it

Again, I said pics or it didn't happen.
Activity Monitor screenshot or it didn't happen.

price drops at owc seemed to have hit a plateau. The way they were going, 1/2 off before Dec. but I guess not now.

Wow.

My late '08 (first generation Unibody) just got replaced for free (bow to AppleCare now) with a new i7 2.2 15" that had 4g of RAM. I immediately went home, installed lion, did a system migration from time machine, then installed 8 gigs of ram and was dancing on top of the world. :D

Then I opened this thread and discovered that you guys are already talking/using 16gigs?

WTF do you guys do? This is the sickest machine in the world!

Does your computer open apps before you click them now? I can't imagine this thing being faster.

When you multitask alot, you want more RAM haha.
Opening CS5s, Final Cut Pro X, Aperture, etc etc you would crave for RAMs.

Although 16GB costs around 1.6K still...
In couple of years, Im pretty sure it would go down.
But then MBPs might support up to 32 or 64GB while 16GB becomes an affordable price :p

Wow man you're lucky! I hope my Applecare pays off in the end like yours. Every time I see a post like this it makes me anxious lol.

And I can't see this faster either. We keep wanting to add more and more RAM. From this point on it's not really the amount of RAM you have in your system, more like how fast it is (i mean, unless you run your Mac for weeks on end and don't want to worry about your RAM getting large). Still, even so, it's healthy to restart and clear that.

I agree.
After opening multiple applications, I restart once in a while so the RAM would clear up.

Yes. Very lucky indeed. People think we're fanboys because macs are shiny. This is why I'm a fan--

Telephone rings:
"Hi. This is the apple store. We understand that the logic board you had installed as a repair (by another apple store in another country!!) didn't solve your issues so we'd like to offer you a new system. Please stop by at your earliest convenience and don't forget to back up your system before you come."

Drool drips from jaw.
Hangs up.
Dials phone.

"Hi, Boss... I can't come in today. I have to get my computer replaced. I'll see you tomorrow."

Then proceeds to brag to everyone in vicinity and reassures their speculation that this offender is in fact a fanboy of shiny new things.

You guys do realize that VERY VERY VERY VERY few people can use that much amount of RAM? 16GB is soooo unnecessary. Even 8GB is largely unnecessary by the general public. For most people 4GB is more than enough to satisfy their need.
Crazy people :p

For general computer user no. (ie internet, movie, music, etc)
But for users that does many video edits, CS5 series, Aperture, we want more RAM. But as I said, its nearly 1.6K.
Not gonna buy that yet.

Perahps, but at this point, a desktop would be more powerful and cheaper to build for the same amount of power. I can't see anyone needing this much power on the go.

Well, I do. I would love to have 32GB of Ram. I use a lot of VMs and memory gets eaten up pretty fast.

Next time, don't assume that if YOU don't need more power other people must not either.

I didn't say it wasn't useful, I just said people that need this much ON THE GO, are rare, and would still probably be much better served by a desktop which is cheaper to build and more powerful for the buck. No need to get complacent about this.

If you need this much power on the go and feel the need to brag about it on the internet, be my guest, this is a discussion forum where people state opinions, I stated mine.

Hmm, not really. A Virtual Machine neds a lot of RAM, Photoshop CS5 and Final Cut Pro will use lots of RAM xD
