Kind of random, but about geekbench.. .

Awhile back i compared cost of Mac computers to their geekbench result, and i found that when similarly equipped with storage and memory, the dollars to geekbench ratio was almost exactly the same for every machine.

Well, it was multi-core points per dollar, and it was around 7 points per dollar....on every machine. I made a spreadsheet. No matter what machine , what processor. The only exception was the top mac mini....but when you add the thunderbolt display, it was the same as every other machine.

I havent updated the spreadsheet for awhile. I should, though....

You made a spreadsheet for multicore points per dollar on Apple products. That’s the most gloriously nerdy thing I’ve heard, and that’s coming from a guy who attended a Babylon 5 convention in the late ‘90s.

Wow thats fast! But not as fast as the MacBook Pro 2020 model

As bad as that is, not only is it slower than the 2020 model as stated, its WAY slower than the 2022 model. And don't get me started on the 2025 model. Clearly Apple is just trying to rip us off.

Here are my thoughts on the new MacBook Pro. I love the increased speed and greater RAM offering, but I'm going wait for the Mac lineup to start featuring Face ID before I make any sort of upgrade. I also think at the current price point of MacBook Pros, it should feature an upgraded camera. A 720p camera is not "Pro" and doesn't cut it in 2019. Other than that, I really like the improvements Apple has made and it is a step in the right direction.
Who cares about Face ID when your watch can unlock the MacBook Pro without even looking at it.

I ordered a maxed out (well, all but the SSD, 4TB there is still 3x more than I need) 16" when they launched and it arrived today, two days early. I was using a maxed out mid-2018 15" MBP and this thing is *noticeably* faster in everyday use so far. My big reason for the upgrade was my work, where I edit lots of high-resolution photos on a LG SuperFine 5K display (and the new Pro XDR soon!). Adobe Lightroom has been dogging since version 8.4 moved a lot of processing to the GPU (they say you can turn that off, but doing so has no effect on performance problems introduced with version 8.4). With the new 16" it's zipping along really fast. I also do a lot of image stacking using Helicon Focus and timing the same stacks of images, the new machine is easily twice as fast, and on some stacks it finishes the jobs in 1/4 the time of my previous machine.

I'm loving the extra screen real estate. It's not immediately obvious but after 4-5 hours on the new machine, going back to the old 15" it was immediately noticeable. I actually didn't have problems with the previous keyboard after the first version was updated, but again, after going back from using the 16" I am appreciating the reversion to a keyboard with greater "feel" and depth to the keystrokes.

If upgrading from a very powerful mid-2018 machine is this noticeable, some of you on the much older machines will see a huge performance difference. BTW, the extra size is barely noticeable vs. the 15" MBP.

To me, this offering is the best laptop Apple has put out since my 2012 rMBP. Time to pass the old gal along to a friend and treat myself to a new compute companion. :)
Yeah when Kuo released his predictions I rolled my eyes and figured it was one of his many endless predictions that turn out to be nothing. I am pleasantly surprised right now. I have been for days. Maybe, just maybe the so-called SE2 is real, too. A brave new Apple is afoot!

Even more battery life

I just found out from the latest episode of Merge Conflict #176 that the FAA has a size limit on batteries so Apple can't make them larger than 100Wh (or if they do, people can't fly with the laptop).

FAA Source:
Size limits: Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) batteries are limited to 2 grams of lithium per battery. Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery.

I believe the term is "weaponized autism."

Next to Jobs Ive is the BSD. It's unlikely that Ive would exit because his team disagrees with him. He could just RIF the entire design team and start over. My guess is that the design team has heard the public outcry and wanted to implement the changes but Ive has put his foot down. After he left, for whatever reason, the team was free to do the right thing.

More importantly AAPL has seen the excellent reviews and increased sales from making the iphone 11 and MBP thicker. At the end of the day a $1T company responds to profits. Hopefully they have received enough positive reinforcement that increasing thickness is the win win move for everyone.
I think what really happened is that the design team got sick of having to send in their MBPs for repair, and the coding team was already down their throats over code errors due to the stupid Touch Bar existence and/or placement and lack of escape key.

Which is why there's been so many high-profile software blunders at Apple in the last, say, 3 to 4 years.

While I completely agree 720p camera is ridiculous for a 2019's $2500 laptop (but hey, Apple being Apple), I don't see what FaceID or higher res camera have to do with "pro" or "not pro". Even further, what does "pro" mean at all nowadays? If that's a machine that allows you to work everywhere even a MBA is a Pro laptop depending on your demands. If it's a machine that it's powerful, then yeah MBPs are Pro's. My question is, why are still using this gimmicky word?

I'll wait the obligatory 4-6 months before purchasing. Call me crazy, but I'm very confident Ive left Apple because he disagreed with this move.
What move is that? The one where they fixed a lot things that were objectively worse under his management? I don't mean to be aggressive, I'm genuinely curious if there's another angle I'm missing because I'm excited about this laptop.

FaceID would be nice to have but not necessary.

But for a laptop that I would keep for at least 5 years I am quite disappointed that Apple stuck to the .ac protocol for WiFi. That will feel slow in about 2 years from now...

Really...because Apple keeps a special version in stock at their stores that is semi-maxed out, for the 16” the configuration is 2.4GHz/32GB/2TB SSD/8GB 5500M for $3899. We look forward to hearing about your purchase!

OH HELL YES!....Just checked and you are CORRECT! Thanks for the heads up good sir, picking this config up tomorrow. Just wish they had the silver version in stock as it seems the space grey config is dominant in all apple stores. Will be my first space grey, sure hope for that much coin, the finish holds up.

The iPhone has a higher res FaceTime camera ... people do notice when you have a crisper image. 720p just isn’t acceptable in 2019 let alone acceptable on a high end Pro laptop.

What high end Pro laptop with a similar thickness has a better camera?

(The iPhone is almost thrice as thick.)

That’s Magic TrackBall and GeoPort, sir!

SuperDrive!

Not the DVD one. The original floppy one.

So the iPhone’s single core CPU perf is 37% higher than the 16" MBP, and the 16" doesn’t even beat it on multi-core by 2x despite the fact that the MBP has 8 cores and the iPhone has only 2 fast ones and 4 slow ones. Intel is hot garbage compared to Apple's silicon. The ARM Macs can't come soon enough. They're going to deliver performance increases like the world has never seen.

We don’t know how long a mythical version of the A13 in a Mac would be able to sustain that performance. In an iPhone, it’s probably something like ten minutes. In a Mac, it needs to be hours.

I think the Metal and OpenCL paragraph has the numbers switched around compared to the graphic.

Finish holds pretty fine except for the trackpad on my MBP 15” 2017 - there are middle areas which are quite lighter compared to the darker gray as it was when I have purchased it 2 years back. Well, its not that visible unless positioned properly but still, the trackpads coating is not perfect.

Honestly, endless years of grey and silver are starting to get a little boring.

Apple can do better than that when it wants to

Hell, even that second one (dark matte grey on lighter metallic grey) would be nice for a change.

Just ordered 2.4Ghz 64GB RAM, 8GB Video Ram 1TB SSD (Silver as I really dislike the Gray). They say early December, so nice Christmas Present. Will give my report on what I think. Converted to Apple in 2010 and not looked back.

Parallel port? Nah, what we really need is a built-in PhoneNet transceiver, with RJ11 ports on the side of the Mac, for connecting to a LocalTalk network. Imagine being able to do AppleTalk at a blistering 230 kbit/s.
You forget the floppy drives! We need a 5 1/4 inch not that modern 3 1/2 inch stuff. Backups - tapes wins the day every time. Then the machine should be thick enough for a proper heat management.
