It's also about time we get touch-screens, for point-of-sale use.

You know, I was one of those people that clamored for years for a touch screen MacBook Pro.

Two years ago I got sick of waiting, and have bought two different Windows PCs with touchscreens - a Lenovo Thinkpad T4x0 and a Lenovo Yoga 920, which has both touch screen AND pen support, one of the best pens shy of the Apple Pencil and Surface Pen.

And.........

Once the novelty wears off, I find that I really don't use either feature that much. Obviously I don't speak for everyone, but for average day to day stuff, I bet most people don't actually use or need touch.

I thought LG owned the OLED market?
Two different types/implementations of OLED. LG dominates in large screens, where there RGBW array is more cost effective, and Samsung dominates small screens where their pentile AMOLED is more power efficient. To my knowledge, LG hasn't made any competitive small screen OLED since the Google Pixel debacle and Samsung pulled out of big screens several years ago—although they are now talking about returning to big way in the next 2-3 years.

I get not wanting to be tied to Samsung anymore than they already are, but OLED & Quantum Dot technology seems to be slowly merging with tentative hopes of solving/mitigating the blue OLED problem. Given the relative maturity of OLED, and the difficulty of scaling micro-LED, I wonder if investing so much in micro-LED is the right approach.

Why is the 11” iPad Pro excluded I wonder? Surely they’re not going to drop the 11” in favour of 10.5”

Apple has updated/introduced the 12.9 at a different time before so I'm hoping that's the case here and we'll see the same update for the 11 inch later in the year. I hate the idea of needing to buy enormous versions of products to get the best hardware options.

That is one of the biggest concerns against the iPad: when compared to Macs of the same age it seems they lack longevity.

I've ben looking to replace my 2011-2012 hardware with an iPad Pro, but an MBA seems to be a better long-term investment for the same (actually a bit less) money. The specs are there for the MBA, RAM in particular.

I've really been agonizing about it, pitting the pros and cons of each setup against each other. I fear taking the iPad plunge and then realizing I needed or wanted something it can't provide.

That said, modern iPads are so powerful and efficient that perhaps the issue is just my old-school thinking. The more homework I do on the iPad's capabilities, the more impressed I become. And they're just so FUN to use.

This is going to be a difficult year. Do I wait, or pull the trigger?
So you have to get rid of the 2012 hardware? There are a few things a traditional computer does better. Keep it around for those few things and do the rest on the iPad. I've found those "few things" usually don't require the latest hardware. Let computing be fun again!

I really dislike the 2020 iPP “upgrade” since I expected at least new cpu BUT I still decided to order it, it’s on its way (slowly). It will replace my 2017 10.5, which it seems I can sell for a good price now (which is my motivation not to wait for the next iPP).

So now I really hope that no A14X iPP is coming this fall 🤪

next year A14X miniled is quite certain imo. I just wonder what cpu the iPad Air and new low cost iPad will get this fall.

They are quoting the very same rumour from Kuo from March, so I would not be worried about. Maybe he made a typo and we are all worried 🙃

Probably just a spec bump. Any redesign would be next year is my guess...sad.

There’s nothing sad about it.

The 16” MacBook Pro is a new model introduced in Fall of 2019. I would not expect a redesign of the chassis until 2023 as Apple has pretty much stuck to a 4 year cycle for the industrial design of their portables.

But...but...Macs need a touch screen! You’re destroying the narrative with actual insight! Oh noesss!!!

The novelty wore off after a few months of using a Surface RT, but some people around here won’t let it go.

What happened to the 6 mini led products launching in 2020
And next year it will be another excuse,
Do investors really listen to Ming kuo or just
Just tech you tubers?
Honestly I think the “global lockdown” is quite a good “excuse”...

Definitely interested in the advantages of micro LED coming to MBPs but not itching to buy / test a first generation of new technology from Apple.

I was referring to the iMac.

The other option is the mini LED is just the high end 12.9, but all other models of 12.9 and 11 get the current LCD until another generation later...

That’s a great point. My iPad 5th gen is approaching paper weight status simply because of the battery. My MBP is on its original battery and still holds a charge after 8 years.

It’s just so much easier to keep a Mac battery in good shape because the charging cord is longer than 3 feet, and the device is designed to be used comfortably while plugged in.

I’ve never understood why a much smaller iPhone is able to be dissembled and serviced with a screwdriver but the iPad has to be glued together.

I have an old iPad 5th gen and a 2012 MacBook pro. The MBP is still a solid machine for someone who doesn't use pro apps, but the iPad barely lasts a day on standby anymore, and the battery replacement cost for an iPad is ludicrous. That and I don't think it's going to get the iPad OS update this fall.
True that the battery replacement has very discouraging price.
Btw I am quite sure your iPad is safe for iOS 14..

Actually that is kind of true. Maybe better to get the 2nd gen miniled devices. Anyway I just ordered a 2020 iPP so won’t upgrade until 2022 second half.

We shouldn’t be bothered with 2nd half 2021 rumors when the iMac and iMac Pro updates for this year still haven’t materialized. No one knows so far in advance so it’s pointless.
This is MacRumors, not MacKnowledge, so rumors are at its core. Disregard them if you wish, but don’t expect MacRumors to stop publishing Mac rumors. The mill itself is the point.

Would they really adopt it for so many different devices at once? Look at how long it took for Apple to include OLED in ONE iPhone. It never made its way to iPad or the MacBook and surely mini-LED must be more expensive since no one else really uses it yet?

Why is the 11” iPad Pro missing from these reports. That’s the device I’m waiting for an update on to upgrade. I hope it receives the premium treatment as well.

Yeah, kinda agree here. Don't really care what is to launch late next year or the year after or whatever. Rather know what is coming THIS year please!

This is such a conundrum. My late 2012 27” i7 iMac is still a workhorse, but bogs down severely on my occasional video projects. I would buy a new one now, but with a redesign coming it seems like the wrong time.

The main reason I’d want a touch screen on a laptop is so that I don’t have to do the “mouse wiggle, then move, then click” action because I don’t know where the cursor is. Actually, even when I KNOW where the cursor is, the text field is RIGHT THERE! Using my iPad Pro has given me a STRONG urge to just just tap it real quick... and then reach for the trackpad LOL :)
