Has anyone else who installed 16GB of RAM noticed the internal Intel HD Graphics 3000 on the 2011 MacBook Pro's reports 512MB of video RAM instead of the 384MB that it's supposed to be capped at?

Not that I'm complaining about extra video memory; it's just I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this.

Running Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion).

Same on my mid-2012 cMBP on OS X 10.8.2;)

Hey,

I'm going to buy a 16GB memory for my Early 2011 MBP Core i7 15".
The brand I want to go for is Crucial, but when I search for memories compatible with my MBP, the site recommends the 1333 Mhz model and says the 1600 Mhz model is for 2012 MBPs.

Here's the link for both 1333 and 1600 memories on their website:

1333: http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=0EA3E8DAA5CA7304

1600: http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=74206909A5CA7304

So can anyone help me make a decision? I really would like to go for the 1600 model but it would be a disaster if it doesn't work on my MacBook Pro.

Thanks.

(2x8GB) 16GB DDR3-1600 G.Skill F3-1600C10D-16GSQ kit works with the following 2011 Macs reporting back as DDR3-1600.

MacBookPro8,2 Early 2011 15" Core i7 (I7-2635QM)
MacBookPro8,1 Early 2011 13" Core i7 (I7-2620M)
MacBookPro8,1 Late 2011 13" Core i7 (I7-2640M)
MacBookPro8,1 Late 2011 13" Core i5 (I5-2435M)

Macmini5,2 Mid-2011 Core i5 (I5-2520M)

switching test

Hi guys,

I have a MBP 15 i7 early 2011 with 8 gb 1333
and a
mac mini late 2012 i5 with 4 gb 1600

I switched the 2 sets of ram and tested

HEAR HEAR

NO DIFFERENCE more then 2% in any machine.

You can see by yourselves here:

http://browser.primatelabs.com/user/23212

consider 8 feb the switch and original the tests before.

What do you think ? Maybe both machines don't run at 1600

Bye

i am using macbook pro mid 2012 and by mistake i have ordered ram with 1333 bus where as as per apple it support 1600.

will 1333 bus speed ram work on my macbook pro mid 2012?

sami

Truth to be told, 1600 or 1333 doesn't really make much of a difference. The difference is not noticeable in real-life situations, unless you use Geekbench to compare performance. IMO, 1600 is only for the higher IQ. I got 16GB 1333 (Kingston) for my early 2011 MBP (2.3GHz antiglare).

Unfortunately, your MBP has i7-2635QM CPU, which does not support 1600MHz (according to this thread)

RAM will work, but the speed depends on which i7 from Early 2011 you have.
If you have 2720QM or 2820QM, it will work at 1600MHz; if another CPU - 1333MHz.

Hey guys I just installed 16GB (2x8GB) Mushkin DDR3 (PC12800) 1600Mhz 1.35V Ram in Late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz Quad Core and it has Timings of 11-11-11-28 and obviously the Cas Latenecy is 11. I booted it up after I installed it and I noticed that in the "About this Mac" section it was only running at 1333mhz. I really don't know what is wrong b/c I ran memtest twice once on the short test and once on the long test and both passed with no errors. I really don't know whats wrong and I even called Mushkin and this is the first time they got a call about it. Does anyone know what's wrong? I already put in for an RMA to Newegg and i'm sending it back unless someone could offer answers.
Thanks

It can be due to 16GB (2x8GB) Mushkin DDR3 (PC12800) 1600Mhz 1.35V Ram. Most RAM works at 1,5 volt, so it leads to a bad identification. Not sure. ;)

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking. The Mushkin tech support guys knew nothing. I guess I gotta get the Corsair Vengeance's like everyone else... Any idea to check out the bios or the EFI on macs? There may be a way to manually increase the clock speed on the ram?

That is not because of low voltage memory: low-voltage memory could work in two modes - 1.35V and 1.5V,
you can check that in datasheet. The reason why the memory was downclocked to 1333MHz is because
the downclock was needed to decrease CAS latency! Mac's native CAS latency was CL9,
so your RAM went from 1600MHz CL11 mode to 1333MHz CL9 mode,
and these modes are pretty equal in terms of performance.
Should have got 1600MHz CL9 to avoid the downclock.

Hello,

I posted in this thread a few years back before I upgraded to 8 GB Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104257&Tpk=KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G. It has worked great without any problems.

I am now in the process of upgrading again as I require additional memory (16GB). Since I was very satisfied with Kingston, I wanted to go for them again.

Has anyone purchased and used the RAM above? The number appears to match the one in the Macrumors RAM guide http://guides.macrumors.com/Buying_RAM#Macbook_Pro, though I was just curious if anyone in the thread had also purchased this one. Thanks!

I have Early 2011 MBP15.

Should i get 1.5V or 1.35V RAM ? I will go for the 1600mhz CL11 (2x4gb)

I can confirm that 1600mhz RAM works at 1600mhz on MACBOOK PRO 15 EARLY 2011 with 2.0 Ghz QC INTEL.

It is Crucial 2x4GB (1.35V).

:) I am very happy.

Hi,

I am using MBP 13' Late 2011 i5-2435M 2.40GHz with 4GB DDR3 1333, planning to upgrade my RAM.

Facing tough time getting 2x4GB @ 1333 & also 1600MHz modules are available easily & cheaper.

Just wanted to know, any harm to the MBP upgrading to 1600MHz?

Harm the computer ? Not really. If the chip support the 1600mhz, nothing to worry about. Even if the chip does not support 1600mhz, chip downclock the RAM to proper freq. Or you must manualy downclock one of the stick, because the other stick will take the freq of downclocked stick. So u cannot mix, one running at 1600mhz and one at 1333.

Check if your cpu does have support for 1600mhz, otherwise buy 1333. Performance wise, really not big difference.
