RE: 16GB Mushkin DDR3 (PC12800) 1600Mhz 1.35V Ram in Late 2011 Macbook Pro

Hey guys I just installed 16GB (2x8GB) Mushkin DDR3 (PC12800) 1600Mhz 1.35V Ram in Late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz Quad Core and it has Timings of 11-11-11-28 and obviously the Cas Latenecy is 11. I booted it up after I installed it and I noticed that in the "About this Mac" section it was only running at 1333mhz. I really don't know what is wrong b/c I ran memtest twice once on the short test and once on the long test and both passed with no errors. I really don't know whats wrong and I even called Mushkin and this is the first time they got a call about it. Does anyone know what's wrong? I already put in for an RMA to Newegg and i'm sending it back unless someone could offer answers.
Thanks,

It can be due to 16GB (2x8GB) Mushkin DDR3 (PC12800) 1600Mhz 1.35V Ram. Most RAM works at 1,5 volt, so it leads to a bad identification. Not sure. ;)

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking. The Mushkin tech support guys knew nothing. I guess I gotta get the Corsair Vengeance's like everyone else... Any idea to check out the bios or the EFI on macs? There may be a way to manually increase the clock speed on the ram?

@ticktock
I will say that I had 8GB of RAM before i got that module, but now everything loads noticeably faster, especially web pages.

Hi, I've just got the same RAM as yours on my MBP 2.4GHz i5 late 2011. The RAM is working fine. You and I know we have the wrong latencies, because the 2x8GB are 10-10-10-27 and Macs are suppose to have 9-9-9-24. Is yours been running OK? Mine has, well just had it for a day…

Corsair 16gb (2x8gb) 1600mhz on 2.4ghz i7 late 2011 macbook pro 17"

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 16gb 1600mhz corsair ram running on a late 2011 2.4ghz i7 macbook pro. I recently purchased it and installed it. It booted up fine at first and my mac recognized the 1600mhz speed but as I began to open applications, the system rebooted a few times and then it gave me the black screen. Are the late 2011 i7 macbook pros capable of running these ram speeds? i've read other posts about people successfully installing these rams on these machine so I figured it would work for me. Perhaps I got a bad set.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Sorry you're having problems! I am thinking about buying this for my macbook too! but mine is earlier 2011 which i don't think it really matter! Have you contact Corsair? Maybe RMA it!?

Yes I'm in the process of getting a replacement. Hopefully it works well. I'll keep you posted.

It's been running great! The MBP can actually take CAS10!

Yeah I think you've got a bad batch, I have the same RAM on my Late 2011 i5 and it's working fine.

You're right. I got the replacement today, installed it and it's working fine. Did my GeekBench test on 64bit setting. Increased it to 11909 from around 10900 which i got using the 1333mhz Corsair ram. Not bad for a 17" 2.4mhz i7 late 2011 MBP.

Hi,

Anyone with a MacBook Pro 15 inch Early-2011 2.2 that has tested 16GB Corsair memory for a few weeks, how's it going for you?

Has anyone tried Kingston HyperX Plug n Play KHX16S9P1K2/16?

They're 16GB, 1600MHz, and CL9. I'm wondering if there is any reason these wont work in my 17-inch, late 2011.

I think that it's one of those that require BIOS to make them run at 1600Mhz or else they would just run at 1333Mhz?

hopefully I could be wrong

As long as it doesnt have the X at the end, i.e.; MODEL#/16X, the ones with the "G" work fine at the specified speeds.

I had this kit KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G in my 2011 MBP and it ran at 1600mhz.

Here is a 16GB kit, but overpriced imo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104317

I also HIGHLY recommend the Corsair Vengeance Series. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233265

I believe the Kingston 16GB kit is more expensive then the Corsair Vengeance because of the latency. CL9 vs CL10 respectively. I know CL9 is what the stock Samsung ram uses so I figured it would be better to use CL9 in the upgrade.

The Kingston kit is the only 16GB ram kit I can find that is 8GBx2, 1600MHz, CL9, and 204pin.

CL is Cas latency, its not going to be much difference, of coarse the lower the better but 9 to 10 isnt that significant at all.

I put the 16gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz in my late-2011 2.5ghz machine and haven't had any problems.

I've looked over the whole thread, but I couldn't find a specific instance of anyone using the 1866MHz 9-10-9-27 Vengeance 16GB kit (part # CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 ) in an early 2011 15" MBP with a 2.3GHZ i7.

Has anyone had any experience with this specific configuration or with this memory kit? Any other suggestions for 1866MHz memory would be greatly appreciated.

Before anyone suggests it, I know that an SSD will provide a big performance boost, and I already have a 512GB Samsung 830 SSD on the way :)

Thanks in advance!
Dave

I think I'm going to do the same. Seems to be nice and stable from reading through the posts here. Though I have a early 2011 2.2ghz MBP, but seems everyone else with the early 2011 are doing well with this.

Hi All,

I have the Late 2011 17" 2.4 i7 UMBP - Just want to check (since I am not so clued up) that the Corsair Vengeance 1600 RAM is still (in case things have changed) the best option for my laptop? I am looking at getting 2 x 8GB.

Thanks!
Bazzy!

Has anyone else who installed 16GB of RAM noticed the internal Intel HD Graphics 3000 on the 2011 MacBook Pro's reports 512MB of video RAM instead of the 384MB that it's supposed to be capped at?

Not that I'm complaining about extra video memory; it's just I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this.

Running Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion).

So what will be faster for the 2011 MBP? 1333 MHz RAM with CL9, or 1600 MHz RAM with CL10?
