Businesses install devices such as the "Mosquito" and the "Zit Lamp" to discourage teenagers from loitering in front of stores.

"The device, called the Mosquito...emits a high-frequency pulsing sound that...can be heard by most people younger than 20 and almost no one older than 30. The sound is designed to so irritate young people that after several minutes, they cannot stand it and go away....Some shops [use] 'zit lamps,' which drive teenagers away by casting a blue light onto their spotty skin, accentuating any whiteheads and other blemishes."

A rather interesting idea, I especially like its implications for 'steaming' prevention.

That's odd.

At 27 I can still hear CRT monitors that are in other rooms (the monitor not speakers). i can pick up the high pitch noise they make, I can also hear hypersonic (cr?) remote controls, and some annoying high pitch CHUD sounds from my G5 from time to time.

Am I still 19 at heart ? :)

It's not just you... I also can walk into a cube farm and find the one CRT that's been left on.

I hope they don't put these at the convenience store by my house, or I might not be able to go there anymore (if it works)!

Anything available to keep them out of movie theatres?

Noo!!! Everybody knows the movie theater is the place to be:cool: .

Definitely more pleasant than stationing a fat man in a Speed-o out front to chase kiddies away.

I heard about this on the radio today...pretty nifty.

Anything available to keep them out of movie theatres?

No kidding.

I wish movie theaters would install those units that block cell phone signals. I've heard of places like churches and some schools using them. The movie theaters around here need them...BAD.

Like birds perched on telephone wires, surly teenagers used to plant themselves on the railings just outside the door, smoking, drinking, shouting rude words at customers and making regular disruptive forays inside.

Odd, for some reason I had this idea that only American teens were complete idiots. I guess not.

You and me both. Sadly, the FCC won't make them legal here... too many morons feel they have a "right" to subject others to their inane droning even in establishments they do not own (such as movie theatres, restaurants, churches, etc.).

I'm really interested in learning what frequency this mystical "high frequency" noise is at. I've read a few things that included the decibel level, but nothing that mentioned just how high this noise is.

Yeah, we were the originals; along with computers, modern business models, the assembly line, and the affordable automobile, idotic teens are some of our most famous and widespread exports.

Same here (hear?).

My eyes also see weird frequencies. There was a while where I couldn't look at PC monitors (CRTs) and had to use my Apple studio one due to a higher refresh rate.

No, it's not! I'm a teen myself... it's more an anti 'smoking, drinking, shouting rude words at customers and making regular disruptive forays' teen thread. :D

I realize that... but its turning into more of a "stereotypical teen thread"... As long as people realize that some teens (ME :D ) are smart enough to not drink, smoke, etc. I'm fine.

but america didn't have the original modern business models or the first assembly line. in fact Henry Ford got beat by a century by a manufacturer in Portsmouth i think, making blocks for rigging on a assembly line in like 1805

Isn't this kinda turning into a "anti-teen thread." :(

nope, just an anti w_parietti22 thread. Now that we got your attention we can move on to other things :) .

No it isn't an anti Teen thread, nor would anyone want you to feel shunned personally. You can have an anti quadra or people in their late 20's thread if it makes you feel better ;)

i dont really see the point of these things....

and i think MR has enough threads on categorizing yourself and its members as it is...

Good!
I'm tired of those teenagers

what, with their "hip hop" music and "rock and roll" hair styles!

they're ruining this country!!

why, when I was their age, I had to travel 11 miles to school, EVERY DAY, oftentimes with a violin AND a viola!
And I used to wear an onion on my belt, as was the fashion of the time

actually, some of my classmates are small and annoying. perhaps I could sell them to this company?

Just a bit of humor, nothing more :) .

I totally agree with your points though! I am waiting for the "who here has stubbed their toe" thread :) .

I'm waiting for the "Official Repellent Teens" thread.

I wonder how bothersome this would be, even for people just stoping by to shop. Also sometimes I stand outside a store waiting for someone, not there to cause any trouble. You would think these shop owners would have better way to police things, or call the police themselves? If I owned a shop and there were underage people on my private property drinking/smoking/shouting I would call the police.
