I'm 18, and I pick up on most high pitched noises, and they drive me nuts. I'll be honest, I wouldn't be pleased if they installed one of these anywhere near me. :p

A rather interesting idea, I especially like its implications for 'steaming' prevention.

Surely it STARTED as an anti teen thread, nevermind it becoming one...

After all, it's not gonna pick out the good kids from the bad. It's also gonna effect somebody of the right age going to get a carton of milk, and chatting to a passing friend or neighbour outside before heading home....

I personally think it's a work of genius. These young people today don't know their born....

Bring back the birch, I say......

You and me both. Sadly, the FCC won't make them legal here... too many morons feel they have a "right" to subject others to their inane droning even in establishments they do not own (such as movie theatres, restaurants, churches, etc.).

Already in use in the UK.

:)

Fry the little s**ts.

Would it be acceptable if a business employed a device that would, for example, cause slight discomfort in the hips/joints of elderly people - comparible to that of an annoying sound - to deter the elderly?

Or what about something that released an awful smell that only females could smell, to keep them away?

Or how about something that was only detectable by Mac users, that kept them away?

I imagine if something was invented to directly taget the group you fall into, you might think differently about the idea.

I'm IN the target group... I don't support the pitch for the outside, but I DO like the idea when this 'steaming' happens.

Oh dear, don't get out much do we?
And if you did you would realise why such a device is a godsend to areas plagued by teen vandals and / or junior criminals.

I used to work in a situation that required the frequent use of referee whistles. I remember when I started at about age 24 or 25, even the metal non-ref whistles (with cork ball) hurt my ears, and the plastic ref whistles were unbelievably painful at full blast-- these are the ones you can hear clear across a roaring stadium.

After 5-10 yrs, I remember the poor college intern 'kids' hurting even with mild use of those whistles, which I coud clearly hear, but no longer caused pain. Therefore--

I could easily see someone tweaking a device that is audible, but not annoying to a typical 30s person, but just annoying enough to someone age 10-20.

Another story-- a piccolo playing friend of mine reports high freq hearing loss only in one ear, the side the piccolo sticks out on.

Yeah, I played the piccolo while in school... wasn't until I'd been playing it a couple years that I found out that you're supposed to wear an earplug on that side. Oooooops. I still have a minor hearing loss in that ear, but not enough to fail DOT/CDL tests.

Add me to the list (at 29 years old this month) that can pick out powered on CRTs.

Hell, sounds good to me. Keep them indoors where they belong......

As a teen, I am completly appauled at this. Sure, there are teens who do stupid things. But there are adults who do the same. Why should we be discriminated against? As said earlier, if this was being done to any other group, people would be up in arms.

This is outragous. If this is installed anywhere near where I live, I will fight it until they are so sick of me they remove it.

Unfortunately these businesses are there to make money, if you don't contribute to their profits and drive other customers away -- you are a problem they'd like to get rid of.

This isn't just teenagers, they even do this to Senior Citizens ;)

A huge majority of the teens who visit these businesses are customers. If only a few are causing disruption, why not take care of them without excluding everyone else?

Me too. Back when I was in school, I would be walking out of one of the computer labs and tell the teacher somebody left a monitor on and she couldn't figure out how I knew cause she couldn't hear them. When I told her she looked at me like I had grown a third ear.

Perhaps, since your negative views on the "lowly teen folk" implies that you are an adult, you might try going out to places teens do not frequent?

I can't see why an adult would enjoy spending time at the same places teens like to hang out.
