Ah ok thanks, you're right. It looks like I actually have a mid 2009 MBP and it says I can handle up to 8 gb. Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between my 2009 and the 2011 that can handle 16 gb?

I have an intel core duo 2 which is 64 bit right? Doesn't that mean I can access 16 gb of ram? Thanks for the help!

New chipset can handle more RAM. My 2008 model is C2D as well but there are many versions of the C2D chipsets before Intel moved to the current i3, i5, i7 models. At one time Apple told us we maxed out at 4GB so that's what I used. Then we were told with the firmware update we could go to 6GB. Finally OWC and others said 8GB will work fine.

Anyway, it looks like you need the same RAM I use in my late 2008 Aluminum Unibody Macbook. The good news for you is that Newegg has the promo again for $29.99 G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model F3-8500CL7D-8GBSQ. This is what I bought last month and it has been a few weeks and has worked extremely well without any hiccups. I bought another set last week for my Mom's iMac that uses the same RAM. You also get $5 off with code EMCJJGN38.

i got 2nd day air free shipping from OWC. They were not offering it I just told him I had Amazon Prime and would they match and they did if I bought with him right then on the phone. $97 bucks total for 16gb of OWC ram. www.macsales.com

OWC is good. I've bought many external HDDs as well as RAM over the years. The problem is that they are expensive and the premium is unfounded (Apple tax). With Newegg and the Intel switch there is no reason to buy an expensive alternative when we can purchase with the uncouth masses from the PC world and use the same inexpensive Southeast Asian made chips.

What is the best way to test and see how my new 8 gb of RAM affects my computer? I currently have 4gb RAM on my 2009 MBP. But other than trying to notice if programs load faster, boot up is faster, etc what should I look for?

Is there a good program to dl? I saw someone mention MemTest86.. but I'm not sure exactly what that is or what to look for. TIA

$97 for 16 gb of RAM from OWC They have one of the lowest failure rates and the best customer service and work closely with Apple products for over 20 yrs. www.macsales.com

If you download iStat Pro you can check to see how much RAM you are using and how much is free.

Memtest/Rember are what you use to test the new RAM to ensure compatibility. You can also use the Apple Hardware Test.

Really the best way is to use your computer for a while as normal (maybe a day) then open Activity Monitor. Choose the System Memory button on the row of buttons heading the bottom 3rd of the window and check the Page outs stat. In the interest of the KISS principle: the Page outs stat basically tells you how much your system is having to rely on your HDD where it would have preferred to use your RAM. That reliance on your slow drive instead of speedy RAM is what slows you down. It's less noticable if you have an SDD, but RAM is still much faster than NAND flash storage. Ideally you want to see 0 bytes for your Page outs, but a small number (relative to the Page ins stat) is acceptable. The larger the number, the more need you have for additional RAM.

I like both OWC and NewEgg, but last time out with NewEgg they used DHL which (eventually) handed it off to USPS and neither could account for the horror show that ensued. You end up with three vendors, none of whom can account for your package.

NewEgg has always been good for me by themselves, but the shippers they use when you're not paying for premium handling are awful. When I won't be able to face myself if the shipping gets messed up I pay for OWC.

Because it costs less?

Besides... all RAM generally comes from the same chinese suppliers. It's simply branded differently. So yes... always buy the cheapest freaking RAM you can find from the most reputable seller.

To anyone that disagrees I say... "duh".

I guess you never heard of quality control or the fact that alot of people have issues with cheap ram...

Never buy Komputerbay memory. They use bottom of the barrel chips discarded by manufacturers which is why its so cheap. Highly likely to get kernel panics or similar errors.

Exactly *who* is a lot of people? Sources and statistics please. Otherwise, find somebody else's post made from 9 months ago to argue with.

temperature when installing corsair 1600mhz CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10

how about temperature, did your mbp keep the same temperature or did it raise a little... or too much after a few hours?

I recently bought 16GB for my macbook pro late 2011, can't seem to find search results on the corsair website but: CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 1600 mhz 2x 8gb modules, the run perfectly but they are a tad more bulky as my previous modules were. I payed 124 euro's($150) for them.
