any type of photo editing....even just using chrome you need 32.

apple screwed everyone with 16.

Not this again.

16Gb is enough for the vast majority of people, including professionals - depending on the workflow. My MBP has 16Gb and on it I work in Zbrush with millions of polygons, I work on 7000x7000px files in Photoshop with hundreds of layers, I work in Blender - so, please, explain in what frigging universe it's not enough for any type of photo editing and good enough just for administrative work.

I edit photos quite often (4 different apps for different needs) and I don't seem to have any trouble at all. MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019), 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD. Either I'm magic or you need to change something.

Obviously you're not a "pro". On this forum, a pro is a person who does everything you do, but needs three times as much RAM to do it.

Post should be locked as obvious troll.

On my Thinkpad I typically have dozens of web tabs open, multiple projects in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Word, and Excel, as well as our own in-house software running. Rarely do I run into limitations with my 16GB. Most people would be just fine with 8GB.

According to other threads he's started in his short time here, he's just bought a Lenovo p53 workstation for his use as an 'engineer' (cough) chasing 'SOLIDWORKS certification' (cough, cough)...
It seems like his attention levels needed topping up, so he's made another troll post and people are giving him exactly what he wants. I'd suggest ignoring him and he'll be gone almost as quickly as he arrived.

I tried to load up everything I could including Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, a sh*t ton of Chrome and Safari Tabs, every utility I have installed as well as the complete Microsoft Office suite AND then exported 250 24MP Raw images and I was at 13 from 16 GB while on a Skype call.

And I would never ever do this in a reallife-situation, because it is freakin' unproductive as f*ck :D

If it's your only device and you'll want to keep it for several years to come, go for 32 by all means. Or even 64 if you need to run 5 VMs simultaneously. Otherwise .... 16 is cool.

16Gb is enough for 95% of people, I can run Linux VM easily and coding with Anaconda and visual studio. If I need stronger lift I use Azure so no problem at all.

More than 16Gb is recommended for video editing and music production maybe some raw photo too, but that's all.

At least with the 16" it starts at 16GB and there are options for more. With the 13" Pro it STILL starts at 8GB and the option STILL only goes up to 16GB. My 2010 13" MBP was 16GB (and my 2012 and my current 2015)... which is one reason I've stuck with it even though I have always updated by now.

I have had 2011, 2014 and 2016 MBP all with 16 GB and they have worked very well for things like Lightroom, Photoshop, VMWare Fusion and Office.

The only reason for me to upgrade to 32 GB was to be able to run 2 - 3 VM at the same time.

Looking at iStatMenus currently I have 22 GB free with Safari and some Office apps. :)

Crome on a Mac has ALWAYS eats memory, that is VERY known! if you want a good security too then consider the Brave Browser because it Secures yourself when going to p0rn sites!

I do a lot of photoshop and lightroom work with 16GB on a 2015 rMBP, but photo work really does enjoy more RAM like 32GB.

Currently running on 16GB. Fan is going a bit.

This thread is amazing. I can do photo editing on 8GB of RAM, which means it must be magic RAM.

I wonder how much I can get for magic RAM on eBay?

OP had me fooled for a minute.

I thought maybe it's true bc Apple is definitely giving use the short end of the stick with 64GB iPhones if you ask me.

I need 128GB base to be happy. 256GB is too much. And 512GB no words.

Totally different.

how am I suppose to get through my computer science degree with 16GB RAM?

Another career choice perhaps?

Swap what you learned in first year out to disk.

If you're good you can do it with a Raspberry Pi.

Don't remind me. I did it on a Lombard G3 with 256 MB of RAM. Now I've got 4GB Pis sitting around doing Swift builds for me.

Indeed... I run VMs even with 8GB.. Dunno why people say base 16" is a bad deal.. It's a hell of a deal if you ask me when compared to any gen ever since 2016.

Especially as a secondary machine yeah. My Mini is on 32GB but that was partly buying for the future, and it was the sweet spot when buying a kit for self-install. I need to clean up my older 13" MBP with 8GB RAM to rehome it, but it's performance was fine. It did use swap over time, but not to the point of being painful.

Swap was the absolute devil you wanted to avoid in the days of spinning platters. Now, it's more a sign you might want to consider more RAM when you upgrade next.

Been using Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign on 8GB for years. It's not ideal, but totally fine for professional work. Check your open apps and background processes.

This. I use a 8GB MacBook Pro every day and it’s all about priorities and managing resources
