That is some good writing. I think you are right.

i am going to buy the 16GB then. I have the mac mini with 32gb anyway.. and i will safe some money and a lot in delivery time.

Lets do this!

Excellent choice!

Now Space Grey or Silver? LOL

There it is! Wauw this computer feels a lot different than the 2018. You can notice that it is a little thicker, and this keyboard feel just right. It is a weird experience, in a good way!

MBP 2020 4-port i5/16GB/1TB

Installing everything now, and might as well download all original photo’s due the 1TB storage which is overkill.

Turbo boost switcher Pro is turned on, let’s see how much battery i can squeeze out of this beauty!

thanks all for your reco

Indeed a nice machine, enjoy!

From which retailer did you buy? Fellow Dutchman here who’s also interested in this config ;)

DrSarah - have you run any benchmarks against your old machine - do you recommend the upgrade? I think I have the same old machine as you do and I am debating which one to keep - stay with 2018 i7 2.7GHz, 16GB/1TB or upgrade to the 2020 2.0 GHz 16GB/1TB. What are your thoughts on the new machine? Did you do a clean install or migrate your old machine over?

If you already have 1tb and 16GB i would not upgrade. I came from 512/8gb.

i did a clean install as i do always. Benchmarks are not really something i look at and you can find them everywhere.
besides it is still indexing and downloading my foto album 35K foto’s haha.

i am noticing it is hot though.

Ok interesting insight! Thank you. So if you had an 2018 marching with 16GB and 1TB you would not have upgraded? I have no performance or heat issues with my current machine and the battery has about 81 cycles on it.

Correct, keep it! It is an amazing machine and if anything goes wrong you have the extended warranty on the keyboard.

One of the benefits of macOS is that its pretty good about adjusting itself dynamically based on the amount of RAM you have. My old 8GB MBP would routinely stay between 6GB of used memory whereas my new 13inch that has 16GB will hover around 13GB utilization.

So really either way you're fine.
it mean macos will eat em all.. not matter how much your ram else compress till it choke.

That's the same one I'm planning to order. Also planning to download my original photos again. I have the originals elsewhere, but the more backups I have, the safer I feel.

Been using the machine now for a full day yesterday at work. Installed parallels to use in coherence mode and running teamviewer for a RDP to a certain machine.
It is using around 11GB of physical memory. Should I have gone for the 32GB...
It is fast though and no slowdowns yet.

I generally try to avoid regrets when buying hardware - I always figure that I can't go back in time so I just live with my decisions the best I can.

Is it swapping to disk? If not, then 32GB would not have made a difference.

VM's are one way to gobble up ram. If that's going to be your daily routine I would've gone with 32.

I think you answered your own question. It's easy to let some number bother you but the end question is does the machine work well. Also as a user posted above macOS will use RAM based on what is available.

I thought the common understanding was that Mac will find a way to use up the RAM available regardless of size. I’ve noticed a couple of days is 200-450MB of swap used and I have 32GB. Both times were days I had Parallels open. Didn’t notice a performance hit - fast RAM and all that - and wouldn’t have known if I didn’t have AM up. Not super versed on MacOS to know exactly what and where to pinpoint, but Brave and WindowsServer were the top tasks on Activity Monitor at the time.

How much memory do you have allocated to Windows? For Parallels, I allocated 8GB to Windows alone - would have allocated more if I didn’t have the limit, but not paying a subscription. That would have left me with 8GB for Mac if I went 16GB. Probably doable, but not acceptable to me in 2020. Plus, I may head over to VMWare where I can allocate more, which I would feel more comfortable with.

Parallels has certainly come a long way since version 9 (the last version I used) in many ways, so there are some efficiencies that can be made that I’m unaware of. That’s all I got. Just thought I’d share my experience as a data point.

I'm no RAM expert but what most knowledgeable users report is that macos will fill up RAM if available but what is most important is memory pressure, the graph on the left. If it's in the green you are fine. The reported 11gb used RAM isn't apparently representative of what is actually needed.

Hey there,

I allocated 8GB of Ram to Parallels and I am honestly afraid to give it more than that.
The laptop is super fast though, no slowdowns and the battery life is amazing.
