Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm gonna go with the 17" now. I'm already used to the weight, I guess I'll get used to the footprint(which really is only about an inch bigger on both dimensions). Whenever I think about getting a 15", I just remember to look at this picture:

I've noticed, that when both units are off(or closed, for that matter), the size difference really isn't that big...however, when both screens are on, the 17" just looks gigantic next to the 15"...and I realized that's simply because of the sheer resolution of the 17" combined with the fact that the black bezel is thinner.

Thanks guys. Gonna place my order for a 17" later today!

I would definitely go with the 17"

I recently upgraded from a 15" unibody to a 17" unibody matte and have found the extra resolution to be well worth it.

I just need to find a nice case for it.

What are the neoprene ones like? haven't found any threads on 17" cases yet, and thinking about a neoprene one that they stock in store.

I ordered the incase neoprene one with my MBP directly through the apple store(I've heard nothing but good things about the 15" and 13" incase sleeves).

Anyway, I ordered:

17" uMBP (BTO Glossy w/ 500GB 7200RPM) - $2,039.00
INCASE NEOPRENE SLEEVE 17"-BLK/FUR-USA - $34.95
Moshi ClearGuard Keyboard Protector - $24.00

Gonna buy AppleCare via eBay later, and probably an optibay + SSD once prices drop near the end of the year.

Total: $2097.95 + 2-3 day shipping + tax, of course. If my parents weren't paying for this I'd be broke -_-.

Can't wait!(This is my first Mac, not to mention my first 17". It'll be an interesting transition)

Going from a unibody 15" to a 17" I really didn't notice much of a difference between the two when closed, but the screen of the 17" is absolutely incredible.

If it helps, the 17" actually fits in the backpack I have which is designed for 15.4" laptops

Hey, I'm having the SAME dilemma :(

I currently use a 24" iMac, and I love the resolution, especially for Logic Pro. The 15" MBP seems like the ideal compromise size, if you know what I mean, but the resolution is lacking a little (I wish it were 1680 x 1050). The 17" is absolutely gorgeous, but I'm taking this to college. I already have a backpack that fits 17" laptops, and the extra pound is absolutely not an issue for me, but the sheer surface area the 17" takes up worries me; sometimes, when I look at it, it doesn't seem much bigger than the 15", but other times it seems huge. I would love the Expresscard slot and the extra USB port, though...

Will it be hard to put on a desk or use on my lap like a laptop should be used? Will I look like a moron using the friggin biggest laptop in the classroom? I'm just not sure how it would play out in the long run... any other advice?

Oh, by the way, I really don't want to get an external monitor; I want the all in one package, if you know what I mean.

After hours of playing with both models, I figured that the 17" only looks gigantic when it's actually open, and that's just because of the high-resolution display. The footprint's just about an inch on both dimensions so it doesn't really take up that much more desk space than the 15".

My 17" should be coming in next week. So excited :D

Right, but does it feel gigantic to use? I know it looks big, it's a 17" laptop!

I still use a older 15" MBP...... back in 2007, when I bought it, I was so happy with my purchase...... until a month later when I saw a 17" high resolution MBP.....

To this day, I'm waiting to upgrade to a 17" MBP, but I sore to myself that I would not upgrade until I get at least 45% - 50% better performance.....

...I'll be waiting for awhile.....:(

EDIT: Honestly I can only think of one drawback of getting a 17" over the 15", and that using your MBP on a airplane. I can barely use my 15" on a plane, so I could only imagine what using a 17" would be like..... But I'm sure I could manage it some how.

This one looks nice at their site anyway…

Yeah true, I work with someone who is 6ft 10" and he uses the 17" and it feels fine for him, me being slightly (alot) shorter I went for a 15" lol

Exactly...I'm a big dude, so my 17" MBP looks and feels perfect.

I've decided to get the 15"; the 17" screen is great, as is the extra USB port and the Expresscard slot, but the size and footprint of the 15" just lends itself better to a lot of things.

To the thread starter how do you like your 17? Apple has a hit with the new mbp. The 13 is sold out everywhere. Great machines.

I thought moving from a 15 mbp to a 17 anti-glare hi res was a great idea. That is until I actually started using the laptop and had to nudge forward to see everything. After about 15-20 minutes of use, my vision would get extremely blurred, and teary eyed.

Since you've already went ahead and made the purchase. Use it for a few days and see if your eyes are fond of the tiny text that the mbp 17 displays. The display is beautiful but squeezing a 24 into a 17 is just wrong.

I have been using it and the text is so small.

Some people love it but I absolutely hate the small text. If I am using a laptop, I rather not have to concentrate so hard to read normal sized text.

I've been using my new 17" for over a month now and absolutely love the display - I've had no issues whatsoever with text sizes. If you think the text is too small, simply pinch to make it bigger.

You will eventually. Either your posture or vision or both will suffer.

Acd

I have a 15" late 2008 and the new Cinema display. It's a great combination -- I'd go that way over a 17". I did have a 17" in the past, but found it a pain to carry around.
