I certainly hope they are going to release the rest of the Mac Book Pro line soon. I am in the market for a new laptop and am going crazy not placing my order for the Mac Book Pro right now (despite the hideous name change). My dilemma is do I do it now and get the 15" or wait to see if they release the 17"?

I'd only get the 17" if I needed a full-on desktop replacement. The 15" MBP is about as big as I'd care to have for a laptop that I intended to carry with me regularly.

I would wait a couple more months myself. Apple may put the performance edition of Yonah into new 17" MacBook Pro. They have to do something with that chip after all! 😎

I'd go ahead and wait for a 17" if that's what you are really after. They may release a 17" version soon, and if so, it may be easier to get than the 15", which I hear are shipping later and later.

I just wanted to point out that the MacRumors story makes it sound like all Powerbooks are being sold while quantities last. However, my memory from the Q1 financial results was that they kept saying they'll sell the 15-inch Powerbook while supplies last. I suspect they may sell the 12 & 17 a bit longer, maybe until there is a 17-inch MacBook Pro, for example.

This transition seems really smooth and Apple seems to have a lot of confidence with moving to Intel. Apple seems to have a good track record with transitions compared to any other tech company. I think the transition from OS 9 to OSX was much more difficult.

advice

So, I have a friend that decided to transition to mac from pc as their pc was very slow and probably loaded with spyware (actually there were fraudulent charges on their credit card). They wanted a computer that would be simple, safe, and perform basic functions. They decided to switch to mac and ordered right before the intel announcement. They were offered intel imac but I felt that the powerpc mac would be better for them as I am suspicous of new lines until the bugs have been worked out. It's been a month since they ordered and still no computer. Now it's clear why. I want them to have a good mac experience, but so far not staring off on the right foot. Any suggestions? Do you think that apple would send 20in or maybe refund and send refurbished at discount? Any sympathy or ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Since Rosetta performs OK compared to G4s, and often faster--and since Photoshop pros who demand sheer raw speed will often choose a tower--I think Apple may not keep the G4 PowerBooks lingering for TOO long. (But I think they'll keep the G5 towers around even after Conroe.)

Low-end Intel Macs need Core Solo and might wait a bit, but new sizes of MacBook Pro could come any time. I really expect all G4 models to have replacements by the end of March.

I predict a 13" MacBook "something" (or "nothing?") to replace the iBook, and if it has a high enough version, then maybe no 12-13" MacBook Pro. I REALLY hope there's SOME kind of dual-core small laptop coming, whatever the name. And I expect the iBook replacement to use Core Solo. On the high-end, a 20" screen wouldn't surprise me too much... dual-duals would, but you never know (there would be room it seems--just disable one chip while on battery).

It it were me, I'd try to get them an intel iMac. If they are using it for basic functions and knowing the longevity of Apple's computers, I can't fathom buying a non-intel based Mac unless you need it. All those apps on the intel iMac are for basic computer use, which sounds like these folks. Plus, the reviews seem to be pretty good on the iLife apps.

I'd rest more assured that I'd bought something with initial bugs, knowing that I may have some issues up front rather than for sure, down the line.

That would be news to me, actually. What source do you have for them shipping later? I say this because I have an order that hasn't budged from the Feb 15th ship date since I placed it shortly after the keynote.

The 20" iMac G5 is now gone from the US Apple store, but you can still order them from Amazon for $1349 with a rebate.

Powerbook to Macbook woohoo

Well for me this may work out... I have the last gen PB 15" and I hope to sell it once I complete my transition to the MBP next month. If true there is a limited supply on PB 15" models, and that there won't be a UB for Adobe till next year then this will help my resale value. 🙂

on to the next

I suppose, this is a good thing, well just have to wait for everytihng to go universal...

Still on the US store for me. Maybe I am special? 😀

Out with the old, in with the new! This can't really come as a surprise to anyone. The 20" iMacs will be next, then the G4 PowerBooks, and so it will continue. Look for the Minis and iBooks to be next... 😎

I highly doubt they will cut the entire iMac G5 line completely. They will start to discontinue models of the Powerbook and other lines of computers that use the G series of processors. I don't think we will see the iMac G5 line completely disappear til we see every major app go native. With the price drop, I am still considering buying one, but I highly doubt they had that many 20 inch models over the 17 inch models. This was a planned cut, and I believe they are still producing the 20 inch G5 model to this day to keep up with orders.

Probably should have just bought it at Best Buy or something..I'm done ordering stuff from the Apple website, it takes too long, and if something goes wrong I hate having to call Apple care tech support because they have always been rude to me.

I do 😉 - The fact that the 17" is dissapearing is the basis of my surmization...Apple won't keep one model going and discontinue the cheaper of that version - and Apple has never kept an old and new model competing with eachother in full blown production. It won't happen; mark my words in weeks (or 1-2 months) the iMac G5 will be gone.

Might still be a while before the 15" G4 PBs are out of stock. i ordered one for my office yesterday and it shipped the same day. I wanted to order an Intel MBpro, but we needed a portable FCP solution now!

Damn, This Transition is going faster than I thought it would...

Yeah I really did not expect it to happen this quickly. The MacBook Pro is not even shipping yet and powerbook stock is fading fast. I'm tempted to order a 12" powerbook just because soon it will be impossible to order one haha. Hm.. well not having any money kills that idea but Apple better get some new products out there soon if they are gonig to be running out of powerbooks in the next month or so.

What I've always hated about the PB is the luxary features were always sacrified, FW800, video card, backlit keyboard.....

If we do see a 13inch MacBook Pro(I hope we do) then I hope it uses the same power adapter and has the same video card and backlit keyboard.

The PB 12" has always seemed a bit like the bastard child of the iBook and PowerBook. Here's to hoping this will change!

Wow - the end of an era is upon us.

So, with AppleCare on my iMac G5 that doesn't expire until mid-2008, if my logic board melts or other heat-related injuries take place, will they replace it with a refurb iMac G5, or issue a new current model iMac with Intel inside? Going to be an interesting three years, for sure.

I really like my iMac G5 - it's the most appropriate mix of speed and value for what I do with it. Not saying that the Intel machines won't be even better, or that Leopard isn't going to be a great OS revision. But, I am now more concerned about its longevity - seeing as I have a pumped up G3 from 1999 still running strong, I am hoping to get five years out of my iMac at the least. Not just because I *really* enjoy playing 3D Ultra Pinball under Classic, too.

I could forsee a class-action suit down the road from G4 and G5 owners if Apple drops support for these systems like a hot potato.

Will there be a 12" MBP? That's the million dollar question for me.

Kinda off topic, eh? Why wouldn't there be? (or at least a 13" widescreen)

It's not a question of if, it's when. If you want the 17 and can wait a bit, wait.

Sounds like one of the intel boxes would be perfect for them. Why so insistent on getting them to buy the hardware that's on its way out?

I think they will. 😛 😉 I guess we'll just have to wait and see who's right on this one....
