I've had a 17" laptop for almost three years now. When I upgrade, I will be buying the 17" MBP.

I would never trade a 17" laptop for a 15.4" laptop (although Dell's warranty exchange people wanted to!). The 1920x1200 resolution is fantastic. I can't live with anything less.

P.S. I'm a student and I do a lot of programming, so the screen resolution helps out a lot. I take it to class daily.

17" is not too big,
and you won't need a bag to carry it around in.
i carry mine around by hand all the time, and that's with a case on it.
(not that it adds that much extra bulk, but it adds some.)

It's not at all too heavy or too thick, but the footprint of it… It's just too large for me to consider it portable.

This is not the right forum for this question. It should be asked in a forum where NO ONE owns an MBP. All that is going on here is people defending whatever laptop they have. Just look at what people "prefer" and look at their sig. 13inchers say the 13" is the perfect size, same for 15inchers and 17s.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having a 17" MBP. However, not even my 15" fits completely on the desks in class. It's all about compromises..

Of course, the perfect solution would be to have a 13" for school, 15" for everything else, and leave the 17" at home for the couch.

Well said, but apparently people still feel the need myself included to defend what size they like. All too subjective IMO, one will never find a definite answer as to which is best and for what tasks. All this talk about 13" 15" 17" inchers, too big, too small, too thick, not that thick, thin, wide, heavy etc. is making me tired. Plus its beginning to sound as if we are comparing body parts:eek:

17 inches is too much for my uses. As an undergrad my 13 MB had trouble fitting on some of the desk. I am still on the edge about getting a 15 i5 MBP because I am scared it will be too cumbersome for law school. But it also depends on what you are going to be using it for. I am sure there are plenty out there that the 17 inch fits perfectly in their criteria, as it shows in your poll.

Gah, necro threads......

I used to have MBA and i love it, the portablity and weight is the main part.

Then i borrow my niese's 13" MBP 2009 model to try. Reason i want to try out the similarity of the 15" HS. Coz 13" font and the small icons would be about the same size. By 2 week. I love the 13" very cute and nice. Only thing i didnt like much about it. Price and Spec. I am a power hunger. I need abit more power. If i watch AVATAR Hidef on it, it would go hot and really noisy fan.

Then when i got my 15" I love it. My eyes already adjust and familiar with the size and pixel. so i wasnt fuzzy about it. 15 i7 is alot better. speed is ok and keep cooler than last model. again AVATAR look great, No jerky part like the 13". First it was too big, heavy and screen abit wide. Now i am used to it. and when i look at my niese's 13" again. Pooney!!

Cheers

I would think it's fine, but heavier than I'd want. My main reason for wanting to finally switch to a Macbook is because it isn't huge and bulky and heavy like my annoying Dell laptop. I'm still going for a 15" screen, but it won't be such a hassle to carry around. I would love the 17" one, but it seems like it'd be another annoyance to carry around campus.

I don't own an MBP, but I've been deliberating between the 15" and 17".

I prefer the screen on the 17", as well as the thinner bezel. The LCD seems brighter (the for antiglare i7, at least) and the 1920x1200 resolution matches my 24" panel, which ensures an ideal amount of workspace. But that's the only advantage to the 17". Otherwise I prefer the overall size of the 15", and it mostly matches the i7 on performance and battery life. The downside of the 15" relates to the upside of the 17" - the 1680x1050 resolution, while mostly acceptable, does not offer the same workspace as the 17", and frankly I didn't find it to be as bright as the 17" LCD (though that could have been an issue with the one at the store).

Bottom line, it's a trade-off: is it more important to you to carry a portable unit or to have a larger workspace?

I use a 17 inch laptop as a portable machine to university. 5 days a week with no problem.

I really don't see the big deal that people think a 17 inch laptop is too big.

But i'm a pretty strong guy though, 6 pounds is peanuts to me compared to the weights I lift in the gym :D

You know, it's funny, I've had 17" HP Pavilions for 5 years (a ZD700 then a DV9700 [replaced by HP when the GPU fried]) and I put my 15" MBP on top of it and it really isn't all that much smaller (length and width, it's MUCH thinner).

i dont understand it either. the 17 is not that much bigger than the 15. when asked why people dont buy the 17 most on here say it does not have anything to do with cost but it is due to size.

there will never be an agreement on this: for some 17" is too big, and for some 15" is too small (or can't afford the 17")... either way, you'll always get a tie.

I know but there seems to be a very small minority that buys the 17 on here it does not seem to be cost.

My first MAC laptop was a DUO 230 - for ultimate portability - but I soon realized that I liked as big a screen as I could get, and every MAC laptop has been a maxed screen size since and always been happy.

The 17" HR is great. I optioned for it on my MBP 2007 and just got my new MBP with a 17". If you are using it mostly as a desktop replacement its a no-brainer, and I move mine around the house and on trips its not so bad.

Now my sister is about to get her first MAC and looked at the MBP 13", and was very happy with the screen size and she wants it to be with her all the time, so its a good size for her.

So there is a 50/50 split much like the poll in our family.

I don't think that 17" is too big per say, but I do think that it's less than ideal. It makes more sense to go with a smaller, more portable notebook and use an external monitor when at home or work. I bought my 15" MBP at an Apple store and looked at a 17" model when I was there for comparison. The 17" is actually a better size when using it at a desk as the extra 2" and resolution make it more usable as a desktop replacement. However, it's still a low-quality TN display that serves little purpose when you consider the cost of going from a 15" to a 17" versus just getting a 15" and a high-quality external display. That's why I chose to buy a 15" high-res antiglare MBP; it's the ideal size for portability and when I'm home I simply connect it to my Dell IPS display.

Couch surfing on my 17" right now. 17" isn't really too big, other than the fact the keyboard is a bit further away from the leading edge of the macbook. I'll probably get it used to it though. The screen space is worth it to me.

When i bought my MBP, I looked at both the 15" and the 17"... the 15" was just barely too big while the 17" was like carrying around a dinner tray. :p
