may be you should return it and get a new phone. I usually like to use the new iPhone without the case for the 1st couple weeks but this time I will just put it in a case from the beginning.8 hours I’ve had the phone. 8 hours!!
Yep I’m going to call them in the morning, I bought it unlocked online from a UK retailer. I might also just get the Air, I was in two minds about it. I’m going to the Apple Store tomorrow to get a hands-on on it. I was concerned about the battery life and the camera quality (lack of optical zoom settings and ultra-wide)Oh ok that changes it. I’d bring it back and exchange it. You didn't pay for a damaged phone
Yeah I didn’t realise the metal would be this weak. I’ve done nothing strenuous to the device.may be you should return it and get a new phone. I usually like to use the new iPhone without the case for the 1st couple weeks but this time I will just put it in a case from the beginning.
That looks like it was banged into something or a factory defect. Aluminum isn’t that weak. Apple has been using aluminum for years and I’ve never had an issue with any MacBook or MacBook Pro. It was probably a defect from the factory. Return and get a new one.Yeah I didn’t realise the metal would be this weak. I’ve done nothing strenuous to the device.
It’s not weak metal. It’s a weak finish. Its not a defect. It’s just going to happen again and again.Yeah I didn’t realise the metal would be this weak. I’ve done nothing strenuous to the device.
The keynote explicitly says anodized and shows a video of the process.I don’t think they’re anodized, it appears to be a paint or other coating. Even the silver color one doesn’t oook natural. Anodized shouldn’t chip as seen in many of the photos posted. Apple’s own site never explicitly says Anodized, just “Finish”.
You’re right, I checked, he does say anodized. But the finish isn’t like any other anodizing I’ve seen. Should not chip or “flake”. Regardless what they said in the keynote, I’m skeptical based on what I’m hearing, feeling and seeing. The keynote explicitly says anodized and shows a video of the process.
For the aluminum Pro, that is.

Anodization is the very surface of the metal, super thin. Literally a few atoms deep. Aluminum is soft and scratches easily. This doesn't have any sort of protective diamond like coating or anything on it. This is not new for Apple. The Powerbook G4 had paint that scratched easily. The iPod had a steel back that would scratch if you breathed on it. The iPhone 5. The iPhone 7 (especially the polished Jet Black finish). The black MacBook Pro currently on sale, and now this. If you want to keep it pristine, put a case on it. Otherwise, it will get marked up. No way around it.
I think you've misunderstood what I was saying. This is exactly how anodized aluminum finishes look when they get damaged. Every product Apple has made that has an anodized finish would look like that if dropped. The more vibrant the color, the more obvious the damage. I don't know what you expected... but this is par for the course. You’re correct. This is an orange Pro but that IS NOT anodizing.
Look how thick that coating is!? That’s not anodizing. I’ve had real oranges with thinner rinds than that. That’s a paint or some finish.I think you've misunderstood what I was saying. Agreed, none of this implies the Aluminum devices are anything other than what Apple directly claimed and has always done for Aluminum iPhones - anodized.I think you've misunderstood what I was saying. I appreciate internet engineers. I don’t see why Apple would lie about the way the build their phones…Look how thick that coating is!? That’s not anodizing. I’ve had real oranges with thinner rinds than that. That’s a paint or some finish.
What color is it? Titanium is a different metal that isn’t as soft. You can’t compare the two.Yep.
I beat the living hell out of my series one Watch Ultra and hardly a scratch.

A little strange, the unibody and the aluminum feel less premium. Will have to get used to it honestly. Can I ask how the 17 Pro feels in the hand without a case compared to the 16 Pro? I am considering upgrading but on the fence.
