What I am loving here in this thread so far:

  1. A days old iPhone's paint chipping away
  2. On an iPhone Apple designed no one asked for
  3. An iPhone Apple made thin (but bigggg) and put the worse battery in it while pricing it much higher than the base phone which is actually more powerful
  4. It was so absurd that they audaciously released a battery pack just for this iPhone
  5. ….and ..and people are still bought it
On top of that, people here are saying:

...Oh that's why I am not buying that colour...

So in a way:

Some are saying: .. it's your fault i.e the classic "you are holding it wrong".
Some: .. but it's gonna be in a case anyway.
Some: .. must be your fault, you would have done something to it.

Those people never said - Apple sold them a pathetic phone (and not just the software) :D

8 hours I’ve had the phone. 8 hours!!
may be you should return it and get a new phone. I usually like to use the new iPhone without the case for the 1st couple weeks but this time I will just put it in a case from the beginning.

The exterior color is not anodized, it appears to be a paint or other coating. Even the silver color one doesn’t oook natural. Anodized shouldn’t chip as seen in many of the photos posted. Apple’s own site never explicitly says Anodized, just “Finish”.

Oh ok that changes it. I’d bring it back and exchange it. You didn't pay for a damaged phone
Yep I’m going to call them in the morning, I bought it unlocked online from a UK retailer. I might also just get the Air, I was in two minds about it. I’m going to the Apple Store tomorrow to get a hands-on on it. I was concerned about the battery life and the camera quality (lack of optical zoom settings and ultra-wide)

Yeah I didn’t realise the metal would be this weak. I’ve done nothing strenuous to the device.

That looks like it was banged into something or a factory defect. Aluminum isn’t that weak. Apple has been using aluminum for years and I’ve never had an issue with any MacBook or MacBook Pro. It was probably a defect from the factory. Return and get a new one.

The keynote explicitly says anodized and shows a video of the process.

For the aluminum Pro, that is.

You’re right, I checked, he does say anodized. But the finish isn’t like any other anodizing I’ve seen. Should not chip or “flake”. Regardless what they said in the keynote, I’m skeptical based on what I’m hearing, feeling and seeing.

Anodization is the very surface of the metal, super thin. Literally a few atoms deep. Aluminum is soft and scratches easily. This doesn't have any sort of protective diamond like coating or anything on it. This is not new for Apple. The Powerbook G4 had paint that scratched easily. The iPod had a steel back that would scratch if you breathed on it. The iPhone 5. The iPhone 7 (especially the polished Jet Black finish). The black MacBook Pro currently on sale, and now this. If you want to keep it pristine, put a case on it. Otherwise, it will get marked up. No way around it.

You’re correct. This is an orange Pro but that IS NOT anodizing.

I think you've misunderstood what I was saying. This is exactly how anodized aluminum finishes look when they get damaged. Every product Apple has made that has an anodized finish would look like that if dropped. The more vibrant the color, the more obvious the damage. I don't know what you expected... but this is par for the course.

Look how thick that coating is!? That’s not anodizing. I’ve had real oranges with thinner rinds than that. That’s a paint or some finish.

Agreed, none of this implies the Aluminum devices are anything other than what Apple directly claimed and has always done for Aluminum iPhones - anodized.

IF, and that’s a big IF, that is not how Apple has anodized in the past (or anyone else for that matter). The anodization WAS the color…

Most of the iPhone series had aluminum bodies, or frames, or both. My experience is that treated well, they'll remain unscathed.
