I just have a question about upgrading. My friend brought to my attention the other day that our upgrade dates fall on september 18th. We both both preordered the 5 with our upgrades and now that the 6 is coming out, we would like to do the same. My question is since we all know that the phone will be announced on the 9th, and a preorder of some sort will occur in the same week, will I be able to preorder the 6 using an upgrade or will verizon make me wait till the 18th. By waiting, I will probably not be able to preorder the phone, and most likely I will have to endure the pain of finding a store that has one after release.

I'm in the same boat and hadn't even considered this.

Any previous VZW upgraders have experience with this?

You have to wait, VZW generally doesn't change the date of your contract and now with the EDGE program, they'll be less inclined to do. That is they'll tell you to buy the phone on the EDGE program instead of waiting until your contract is over.

If you do the upgrade with Apple it will let you do it in the same calendar month. Doing it through Verizon makes you wait until the exact day. This was my experience when I upgraded to the iPhone 5 at launch anyway.

Not sure how this would work but a Verizon rep told me that I can preorder it and wait until my contract ends to activate the phone.

Is 9 days really that big of a deal though?

Its not the wait from preorder to release date that Im worried about, its the wait after release date if they sell out quickly on the day it comes out. I have a feeling if I have to wait till release day, I will have to wait till mid october to actually receive the device

Thats weird cause when you preorder, you will have to pay full price if your date is after the preorder date. On verizon's website, if you preorder, you have to have the upgrade open in order to get that price, activation is a different story in which you are already charged for the phone before receiving it. That's with Verizon at least.

I hope you are right, I don't mind preordering through apple

Oh yeah, that sounds like it could really be terrible. I sure hope it turns out much much better for you.

Looking at the calendar though, I'd say that with the announcement on the 9th, preorders would start on the 19th (10 days later on a Friday).

From another thread:
If you are eligible on September 30th and want to upgrade on the 1st of September AT&T will let you (provided there is no outstanding balance on your account... so you may have to pay it earlier than you're used to).

Verizon will not. From what I have heard there are almost no exceptions.

Many people have been turned away after waiting in line for hours, so make SURE you are completely eligible (don't plan on "sweet talking" your way into an upgrade...).

I called verizon and they changed my upgrade date from 9/21 to the present day. They resisted a bit at first, then tried pushing EDGE, and then I just told them I was preordering 2 iphones on the first day possible and if they didn't move my upgrade date I would just order with another carrier and let my contract expire in 3 weeks.

Thanks. I may try this. Especially with TMobile giving Big Red & Ma Bell a bit of pressure these days.

smart. this wasn't possible for me a couple years ago, because upgrade eligibility didn't line up with the contract end date. ever since verizon moved upgrade eligibility to 24 months, they can't really hold the etf over any customers to hang on to their service.

AT&T was always good about giving early upgrades, since a store manager could override any upgrade date. My experience with Verizon is that they play everything by the book more than anyone else

I've had quite the opposite experience with Verizon. They've always given me either a manager override or completely changed the date, as long as if it was in the same month. I just called them 3 days ago about doing this, and they quickly offered me to have a manager override when I was ready to upgrade. That was nice, but the problem was that that would only allow me to upgrade sooner in the store or over the phone. I wanted the actual date changed, so that I could upgrade sooner online, as soon as the iPhone comes out. That took a bit of convincing, and asking to speak with a manager to explain why I needed it done, and then they did it.

I've called twice about this same issue and have been flat-out told "no" they can't change anything about my upgrade date, which is 9/21. If preorders open up on the 12th, or if they don't do preorders and it's just a free for all on the 19th and my upgrade is just two days away, I'm going to be a pretty upset dude.

Pretty sure if you preorder through Apple you can just wait until the 18th to activate. Best bet is to call.

Sounds catastrophic.

i have this same problem since my upgrade date is 9/21

I have a friend who works at VZW who said he would be able to get my the early ( few days) upgrade before my actualy date or whenever the iphone 6 releases.

So it IS possible, just a matter of getting the right person to get it done for you. Or giving them the proper motivation to as a customer.
