Not trying to encourage fraud here, but if it's within the 60 day grace period you could call and add AppleCare+, then get a replacement for $80.

No need for AppleCare, take it in and ask for a screen replacement for $129 and since they likely don't have the screens to replace it yet they'll give you a whitebox device.

Apple can do the diagnostic by you plugging into your computer.

I have always wondered if said diagnostic can sense a shattered screen or something.

By the way, something that hasn't been said, Apple charges $109 for a new screen. Right now most are just replacing the entire device. And you are unlikely to get a true refurb this early in the game. Actually cheaper than AC+ plus the replacement cost.

Look into square trade. If you bought your phone in the last few days, sign up, then put in a claim about a month from now. Not saying you should do it, but it could technically work.

I put my 2 week old iPhone 5 through the wash.

The manager of the store allowed me to buy AppleCare on the broken phone after I destroyed it.

If you do it in store, yes they do inspect. It can be done by phone but they have to run some diagnostic and pass the diagnostic test.

My iPhone 5 has dropped off my bicycle while cycling on the concrete several times and never even got a scratch really. Even landed on screen.

I just have a soft plastic (non gel) case on the back of it, nothing expensive for fancy.

I think the screen replacement even on apple care is $80+

AppleCare+ is $99 and the OOW replacement fee is $79. Not sure you can get AppleCare+ without a Genius inspection.
