You can also check with your home insurance. Some insurance cover damages from clumsiness, some even do that when you break something outside of your house. For instance, my house insurance covers my iPhone, my MacBook, my bicycle and my cameras if they get broken or stolen outside of the house. I do have a 125€ deductible, but given the cost of an iPhone, that's still interesting.

You can also check if your credit card has some kind of insurance on the products you buy with it.

That is so cool. I wonder what kind of tests apple could run remotely to confirm whether a phone has been damaged or not.

For example if ONLY the screen shattered yet there are no other signs of damage on the phone, what tests would be done remotely that can show that the screen is cracked without actually visibly seeing it.

Probably uses the motion coprocessor to log any major impacts.

That's my guess anyways.

So I talked to apple chat and said I wanted to buy AppleCare. The rep texted me a link that started with diag://... I ran it and the rep said failed??? She asked if the phone had been damaged and I left the chat. So now I'm not sure what to do

Hopefully your phone will now show as failing the diag and being damaged and you won't be able to get AppleCare +.

Let's hope so.

Title says it all. Can I buy AppleCare and get a free replacement? Also I think the phone is weaker, there is no way the phone should shatter from a 4 foot drop

Let's see if we have this right....

So you bought a phone, you turned down the insurance on it, then you went out drinking, then you dropped your phone. And now you want someone else to pay the damage?

REALLY????? WTF? Maybe you can fake a limp and go on welfare while your at it....

Take responsibility for your actions!!!! Go into Apple, tell them what happened, and see what they can do for you.

Don't have to make the purchase with the particular card to get covered?

That's the point. If more people would open an Amex or a visa/MasterCard credit or debit card with the appropriate coverage instead of continuing to rely on their lowly bank card, we'd see far fewer threads such as this.

[MOD NOTE]
I don't at this point any further productive discussions will occur. Closing.
