I was reading some apple watch threads today and began wondering how many of you guys out there have your Kia's wrapped in bubble wrap to 'protect' it from dings and rocks and, apparently, life.

Real watches cost a lot. I mean a lot. A nice Omega or Rolex or Panerai (or Corum, or Bell and Ross, or even a semi luxury watch like Tag Heueur or Oris) cost anywhere from 1,200-1,500 all the way to 30,000-40,000 dollars. Your average Panerai or Rolex will cost you about $5-6000 dollars. And here's what you absolutely won't see - a goddamn sapphire screen protector or a stupid ass watch 'bumper'. Watches, especially fine watches, are jewelry. A luxury sports watch, like a Rolex submariner, almost any stainless steel Panerai, or an Omega Seamaster, for example, is a tool. We in the watch world call them 'tool watches'. You can think of it like a Porsche 911 GT3. It's made to be used. James Bond (who, in the latest movies wears an Omega Seamaster and not his usual Rolex Submariner) does not wear a 'bumper' or a screen protector on his goddamn watch because that would be 1. Stupid. 2. Redundant (because sapphire) and 3. Tacky. Beyond belief. Watches are tools and they're meant to be used. That's life. Stainless steel is pretty strong stuff. You don't need to worry about ANYTHING. Sapphire will NOT scratch. Stop worrying.

I've owned many 3-5k watches. You get over that first scratch. I've never scratched a sapphire crystal. Stop worrying. It's a watch.

Finally - this is the tough part for apple. Watches are not entirely just tools. They're jewelry. For men in particular, it's one of the only pieces of 'jewelry' we can get away with wearing. Plus, the right watch has the amazing ability to make you appear more manly. Hence the reason why Panerai, omega and Rolex are so popular. James Bond wears one! Tech nerds definitely don't understand this, and that's a problem for Apple. Not a big problem at all, just a stupid silly problem that will probably get a ton of media attention. Apples watch CAN GET SCRATCHES! Oh my god! Nerds will be screaming to create a 'bumpergate'. Front page news - stainless steel can scratch? What the hell?

My advice would be - get over it. No one really lies getting their watch scratched. It just happens. But they're meant to be used. Scratches will happen. The crystal is tougher than you'll ever believe possible. Enjoy your watch. Don't rush to cover it in a nerdy ass bumper or cover the sapphire in a stupid ass 'protector'. If you do - you're hilariously missing the point.

I definitely agree with you. I'm not a fan of screen protectors or bumpers on the Apple watch.

I have a $450.00 Tiffany & Co. silver bracelet that was gifted to me. It's scratched to all hell but I wear it and not worship it.

lucky that i bought a screen protector for my smartwatch. I accidentally, as it usually happens, scratched the screen against a wall, and it looked terrible, BUT it was the protector only =p another reason i have it because i want a matte look instead of clear...

I think it's just a general lack of understanding of sapphire. For those worried about scratches your concern should be the watch body not the sapphire glass. Of course no idea how the ionX glass will workout.

Putting a screen protector on sapphire glass is pointless.

Good, I'm glad. It was meant to be super condescending. Because all of this talk is stupid. You can't buy taste.

Enjoy your watch. If you want to put your beautifully designed iphone 6 in a big brick case to protect it, then that's fine, though hilarious. You take this incredibly well designed tool, engineered to be light and thin, and stuff it in a brick to 'protect' it. I just find it hilarious. It's like buying a beautiful car or fine furniture and wrapping it in plastic. It's just silly and beyond bad taste.

Applying that thinking to the watch is just hilarious to me. You guys are missing the point entirely. I don't think you understand entirely what a watch is. It's a tool to be used AND something that makes a statement. A Panerai says something. So does a Patek Phillipe. So does a Bell and Ross. And they all say something completely different. The cool thing about the apple watch is there is so much variability that you can have complete control of what you want to give off. The stainless steel is a good mix of utility and handsome, elegant design. If you want to put yours in plastic and wrap it to 'protect' it, be prepared to look stupid. Reminds me of a pocket protector or something.

I bought my husband a Tiffany money clip (it's sterling, of course) and it's scratched up like crazy. He's only had it since Valentine's Day. Does he care? No. It's a utility. Fashionable, but a utility item.

I think it give it character. I do not like scratches on my phone (but I don't use a screen protector and I only use minimal cases, but that's more for grip and drop protection), but on a watch? Yeah... I'm okay with that. My other watches have had scratches. Hell, the diamond ring I'm wearing right now is platinum and it's got scratches all over the band. And costs more than an Apple Edition watch. No big. It's still pretty. It's just platinum. There WILL be scratches on a daily wearable item.

I feel the people who are paying needless money on excessive protection (with exception of people in professions like construction where there is a need) are either OCD, or financially not comfortable buying the gadget in first place.

iPhone screen DOES NOT have noticeable scratch under normal use (unless you are a lady wearing diamonds, then yes I can understand the need for screen protectors..)

I will forgive construction people using a case for Apple Watch... in absence of that... DON'T!

I have NEVER seen anyone using a screen protector on a sapphire - NOT EVEN on those $100k watch or Rolex, or Omega, or Casio, Or Seiko... you get the idea.

For cheaper/mid priced watches, people don't use protector, if it scratched up so be it.

For expensive watches, there is no need to cover, Sapphire does not scratch unless you intentionally want to damage it using a diamond drill! (and if you can afford comfortably and purchase an expensive watch, you probably should not cover it up. 1. there is no need 2. people would think you are a sorry sob who bought an item you can't afford to show off)

$349 for a nice watch is NOT expensive. It falls under regular price rank of a "nice" watch.

For people buying SS Apple Watch, and if they hate scratches they should be more worry about the band scratching up (SS) than the sapphire screen itself. (But what people do with SS is they polish it once every few years if the scratches bother them - and yes, even on a Rolex that costs 5x to 10x more than a SS Apple Watch)

Scratches on SS can be polished away to make it look new (just don't do it every day!) - If people's motivation for "protecting" the watch is for resale value, from my experience with iPhone, a pristine used iPhone vs. an iPhone with a few hairline scratches that's not visible when the screen's on sell for the same price.

Not sure about ion-x screen, but sapphire screen does NOT scratch. I have owned sapphire watches for more than 10 years and not a single scratch even have the watch bumped into steel filing cabinets and against concrete walls - NOT A SINGLE SCRATCH.

Good points. You sort of just learn to be careful about the things you enjoy and appreciate. That's how I manage to have a naked iPhone - been that way since day 2 in 2007. Never broken a screen. Because I'm conscious of what I'm doing. And I passionately love design and style.

If you're paranoid to the degree that toull wrap your watch is plastic to keep it from getting a scratch - something is seriously wrong. I feel a bit sorry got you. Life is for living!

I do think it would be a good idea if Apple let more than one Watch pair with a phone (currently it's restricted to one watch per phone, and one phone per watch). That way people could get the $349 sport watch for activities, and a nicer watch for office use. True, it's possible to use the cheaper sport band to avoid scratching, wear, etc. of the nicer bands, but especially since no one knows for sure how popular the Watch will actually be, it seems strange that they are leaving out the possibility that someone would want more than one for personal use.

i dont have (and wont have) apple watch and sapphire screen =p but in my case the point was getting the matte screen instead of clear. im not sure how "good" the apple watch would even lookalike because of rounded corners...

This is getting to be one of the funniest threads yet. I did have protection on my Pebble but it is Plastic. However, since the Pebble is curved the edges were starting to curl up and look bad. I finally pulled it off last week.

With the curved screen it will also be tough for most to get a perfect fit on their own. ICK.

It clear that those who fight so hard on this issue clearly have no experience with Sapphire Glass. When I first got it I scared myself a few times when I noticed what looked like scratches but it was just paint from walls I scraped. You just scratch that off with a fingernail and buff it with your t-shirt for fingerprints and it is perfect again.

Of course it is also possible that those who are getting emotional over the dire need for watch screen protectors might just sell them?
