The amount of insecurity and snobbish attitude in this thread is profound. Caring so deeply about somebody putting a protector on their watch speaks volumes about how condescending you are as a "person". Enjoy your thread about making fun of opinions that differ from yours.

It's in no way hilarious or ridiculous. Also I very much doubt it would get the reaction you say it would. There is nothing wrong in having a screen protector or all body cover on a watch as expensive as this. I agree using a bumper is certainly going too far.

I think the OP is right. I also find it absolutely stupid having a watch in a protective case and applying screen protector on it. When I first saw threads about this I seriously thought it was a joke or some kind. But hey, this is just my opinion. Never ever I would even dream of wrapping my watch with trash.

I don't believe this thread is about insecurity and snobbish attitude. Rather an educational thread to help people who never had a watch with sapphire glass to not waste money on a screen protector that detracts the user from the good experience and does absolutely nothing; as well as to educate people who have never worn a watch that it's not a common practice to put condoms on a watch before they make a fool out of themselves.

I was reading some apple watch threads today and began wondering how many of you guys out there have your Kia's wrapped in bubble wrap to 'protect' it from dings and rocks and, apparently, life.

I've owned many 3-5k watches. You get over that first scratch. I've never scratched a sapphire crystal. Stop worrying. It's a watch.

My advice would be - get over it. No one really lies getting their watch scratched. It just happens. But they're meant to be used. Scratches will happen. The crystal is tougher than you'll ever believe possible. Enjoy your watch. Don't rush to cover it in a nerdy ass bumper or cover the sapphire in a stupid ass 'protector'. If you do - you're hilariously missing the point.

Well It is great that you can afford 3 - 5k watches, as for me I work a manual labor job and with family can not afford such. also I will assume you are a right handed person, so the crown would not be pointing out towards the hand where the crown could be damaged rather easy. There are many people here that will consider and most likely buy some sort of protection for their watch. everyone will make their own determination on if or if not according to the environment they will subject their watch to. so I would say that you really are missing the point:)

I have worn watches all my life, and I'm 57. I have had many watches broken while working, and playing. the last 4 watches had the screens smashed by steel bars falling, and one by sparks from welding and grinding. If I had a watch "condom" as you say I may still have use of these watches. Also I assume you are also right handed, and won't have to deal with breaking the crown off while reaching for something. I have read many posts on how good sapphire glass is, but it is not a force field and stuff happens:eek:

I think that's a different scenario altogether; I wouldn't fault a steelworker or welder for wearing a protective case while on the job by any means. Blue-collar workers, sure. White-collar workers though? Not so much.

Plus, the right watch has the amazing ability to make you appear more manly.

eh, no.
an expensive watch makes people look like they are overcompensating for something. Like a dentist who drives a Porsche.

Haha I couldn't have said this better myself. The point was to be condescending. Because of you're going to wear a watch bunoer or condom or case or whatever the nerds come up with - then you should have just gone Google glass. Because you're going to look like an idiot.

I just got some new Persol sunglasses. Kinda expensive. I'm going to be busy for a while wrapping them in plastic and applying lens protectors. So normal!

I just like nice things. I last wore a Panerai with the largest crown protector you've probably ever seen. Left hand. I could care less if it got scratched - but only because it's inevitable, not because I could afford to toss it and get a new one. Every nick was remembered. Every mark have it character. We call in patina. You can think of it as living life.

Nah, that's envy talking. Nice things are nice things. The man who wears it? Different story. An expensive watch CAN be beautiful. It can also be garish. It's dangerous and a bit silly to lump fine things together with garish people.

They may look like that to YOU, but a person who is very well to do drives a Porsche because they can afford it and are fun to drive. When you got that much money you spend less time trying to impress the little people.

It is mostly the not so well off that are overcompensating:rolleyes:

Some people actually do need a bumper case

I believe that there are good reasons to need a bumper case at times.

For example, someone who works construction, or around electricity, or welding, or any other activity where either the case can be damaged easily, and/or where its metal case can be a liability.

So yes, I can totally imagine uses for something like this newly announced rubber "Bumper" case that fits around the watch case itself (the band is the stock band):

It could be worn during work, and then removed when home or out on the town. (Not sure how easily, but I would guess that the quick-remove watchbands help with that part.)

This one doesn't look bad at all I must say. Makes the watch more "sporty".

Exactly! good to see understanding:cool:

I won't be buying any screen protectors or bumpers for my SS watch, but if a waterproof cover ever comes on the market I'd probably buy that. Not for day to day use, but for beach and swimming pool use, when I feel safer to keep stuff on me than leave it on the beach. I have a waterproof cover for my iPhone and routinely take that into the sea with me. I'd like to do the same with my watch.

I could see how that might make sense. Of course that person is about 3000 times better off with a g shock. But if you absolutely wanted to wear your apple watch to a construction site or you do hardcore manual labor or something - then that would be suitable. For anything less (like a desk job) it would be completely ridiculous.

I can certainly afford an expensive car. I choose to drive a low-end model and give the difference in monthly payments to an international charity. To you, I probably appear to be one of the "little people" who are envious of your wealth.

Can a G-Shock display notifications of all kinds? (text, mail, appointments, incoming calls, rain coming, etc)

And have the ability to reply to some by voice, with one's hands busy?

There are times where nothing replaces a smartwatch.

For an actual job at a desk, a smartwatch is ridiculous, since the person's phone is probably sitting right there in its charging dock :)

(Of course, the watch becomes useful when you leave your desk for a meeting where you might not be allowed to pull out your phone.)

It is both hilarious and ridiculous. There is definitely something wrong with 'protecting' a $600 watch. I've been to MANY watch gatherings (yes, this is a real hobby) and have personally handled, worn and owned watches from $5k to 30-50k. You know how many watch 'protectors' I've ever seen? NONE. EVER.

This is not because of WEALTH. Its because of STYLE.

Be prepared to be laughed at.

You're wasting your time, mate. You're on macrumors, a forum full of geeks and tech guys, they're not watch guys and don't understand this industry. Plus they lack style, as you said. Of course, not all of them, as always there are exceptions.

Personally i couldn't care less if i scratch my sport/casual watches. They're tools and i wear them all the time regardless of what i do: work around the house, work on my cars, ride my bike, etc. They have scratches, but guess what: you can polish the watch every 5 years and it will look like new. And it's cheap, plus you can do it yourself.

There are times when nothing replaces a smart watch???? Did you just write that?? Like when?? 99% of people on earth have never owned a smart watch. How in the hell are they indispensable already?

You're not watching the news. Those 99% all perished today. Just us 1%ers left.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, let's not try to bash anyone who wants to get a screen protector or bumper for their Apple Watch. I'm sure everyone on this thread is excited about purchasing the watch like myself and from that excitement, they want to preserve their watch if those protective material do become available. Or maybe they want their screen to have matte finish to it. In short, every opinion has some value to it on this thread but let's not resort to bringing anyone down.
