I wish some of these new LCD's had higher resolutions. I'm currently running an SGI display which is 17" widescreen @ 1600x1024, which is more than those 19". I love having such a fine dot pitch because then i can't see the individual pixels. Even the Dell and Apple 20" and 23" have pretty large pixels and the "screen door effect" bothers me. I'm happy I was able to pick this display up for $100 :D

ah...wish i'd seen this thread this morning.
have spent most of my day looking at monitors,
I'm looking for almost the exact same thing..to go to the same town *creepy*

has anyone found anything else?
anything of bargain value i've found has either not had the right resolution (i'm moving from iMac to Powermac shortly and want to get at least 1440x900.
or it's not had the right connections.

looks like my upgrade will be held off till the intel powermacs later in the year, but still good to find out as much info as possible.

I had considered the Apple 20", and 80% decided to bite the bullet and buy one, but it's hard to justify that price tag (even with my edu discount, it's still £450 for a monitor)

*sigh*

can LG or AOC not bring out a 30" widescreen with ultimate resolution, all the connections and a price tag of about £250? :D

anyone happen to know/have the specs for the iMac screens?

I'm currently using an intel 17" iMac....it would be nice to be able to compare what i'm using with what I want/what's around

Westinghouse LCM-19W4

OK, I got my Westinghouse LCM-19W4 today for $299 plus $20 for a DVI cable. I must say that this thing is very nice for the money and it goes well visually with the Mac Mini. It's much brighter than the VGA CRT Apple Studio Display I was using.

nice one Davey!

thanx for that, good list.

I'm suprised only the viewsonic screen has both 16.7 million colours and DVI in the 19" range.

Not sure if i should wait a few more months for more new models to come out, or if i should just go for the viewsonic one..

Good list but what about the Samsung...

Looks like a good tax return this year, so, aside from my hacking away at my credit card balance I thought I would also finally give up my old Princeton EO705 CRT and go for a wide screen.

The wiki list put together so thoughtfully by Davey though does not include my choice, though, the Samsung SyncMaster 204B, 800:1 contrast/8 ms response and lowest price available seems to be my local Fry's at $499.

Any thoughts on this monitor?

I was thinking about the Westinghouse....but cannot get past my boycott of Westinghouse products...

The Princeton was (and still is) great, although I had to have the first one replaced by Princeton. I am wondering what changes and compromises to expect with an LCD, but the power savings and space savings (the Princeton is huge!) are worth it.

I don't buy Westinghouse products because they are too much a part of the death weapons industry. Many people have a quiet, perhaps too much so, boycott of Westinghouse and similar companies. We chose to put our $ elsewhere.

Always a difficult choice. There are three main reasons I am waiting - unfortunately, they probably don't apply to you :p.

  1. I have two iiyama 17" CRT monitors, with intermittent display faults. They are both at least 8 years old and have had their faults for at least 6 months now, but show no sign of finally dying.
  2. The Samsung panel is very new and I 'read'* an article a couple of days ago claiming that there will be a plethora of updated models this year as manufacturers switch away from the CMO panel to the Samsung panel. This means that there will be many more 19" widescreens with DVI and 16.7M colours.
  3. I don't like the look of the ViewSonic and have an adversion to paying extra for tiny speakers that sound like c**p.

[*] The article was in Chinese, a language I don't understand.

Nice monitor :D I started off by detailing all the 19" widescreen models I could find, but made a superficial attempt to cover 20-21", 23-24" and 30" widescreen models in related guides. Of course, the guides are a wiki so it is easy for anyone to add details, fix mistakes and expand the guides.

I notice that the 204B is a 20" 4:3 ratio model, so it doesn't fit nicely in any of the existing guides, but I for one would certainly welcome a new page (guide) covering the 204B and its competitors.

Most 19'' monitors have the same resoulution of a 17'' monitor (1280 horizontal), 20'' increase the resoulitio (to lets say say 1440), that's why 19" are cheaper.

Well, as of today, my girlfriend is now running dual 19" monitors on her G5. One is a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF Flat Screen CRT and the other is a new Westinghouse LCM-19w4 Widescreen Display. This thing is goregous, I'm just a little disappointed that Westinghouse only supply a VGA cable :( . Luckily, I found a 6' DVI cable on eBay for $8 shipped. Also, we have to wait for the VGA to ADC so she can run the second monitor on her Radeon 9600 Pro. Great monitor though, disappointing warranty, but everything else about it is wonderful, especially the price tag. 1440x900 is beautiful. :D I am definitely going to pick up one of these over summer for a second monitor for my PowerBook.

So...excuse my ignorance:rolleyes: but why does the 4:3 ratio make this model, the Syncmaster 204B,...unique.

My general needs for a monitor are in producing basic video (5-6 minutes shorts); journeyman graphic design; surfing/research; watching CSPAN while using other apps; advanced word processing; and DVD watching.

I am assuming that the 4:3 ratio will not complicate these cybernetic goals. What, by contrast, is the ratio for an Apple Cinema dispay?

I think I am buying today because Fry's has a $30 rebate that expires 3/1.

Get a widescreen, whatever you get. 4:3 is just trash once you use a 16:9 or 16:10!! (I think that all widescreen monitors are 16:10; whereas true widescreen is 16:9)

sounds good!

you got any idea of the time scale til these new pannels are put to use?

As much as i'd like one now, i don't realy need one til i move house in July, so i think i'll wait til they finaly get them all speced up and looking nice and don't have stupid little speakers in and stuff

man, i like the look of this one!

hs4.JPG

when i search for HW191D (it says on the ticket behind the screen) in google it only brings up the mac rumors guide page.

why is there no other info about this badboy anywhere else?

I would like to think that'll be out in the UK in the next month or 3, but can't see that happening.

what you guys think?

I might just go with the ViewSonic one, but to be fair, i want one that looks nicer!

I picked up a 19" Widescreen Acer AL1916W with a 1440x900 resolution to hook up to my 12" G4 iBook when at home and it works beautifully and is much nicer to use than the 12" screen, especially seen as its much brighter. Great for watching movies on too.

I got it from Amazon for about £180, well worth it.

yeah i realy like that screen, looks nice.

i would have bought it 2 months ago if it had a DVI connection.

WHY DOESN'T IT!!

but aside from that, does it look crisp and have nice colors and stuff?

I would hardly consider ViewSonic a "lesser" make, especially compared to Dell.

ViewSonic makes some of the fastest, brightest, most color accurate LCD panels on earth. And they've been making professional-quality displays for studios for 20 years now.

ViewSonic is widely considered one of the upper-end, "BMWs" of the display industry. If you go to many art, print, design, and film studios you'll likely to see dozens of ViewSonics for a reason.

Also, be vary aware of what your purchasing when buying an actual generic brand display... a pretty case does not a quality LCD panel make.

yeah i realise all of that...

i read a review for the ViewSonic widescreen, and it didn't like it much...

I know they're a good brand, i'm just interested to see what else is coming up on the market b4 i buy one.

I would ideally like one that just had a thin bezel and no speakers and junk. but obviously the quality of the panel is what counts :)

shame that no-one here has one of them ViewSonic VA1912W's..

It is made by a spin-off of a display panel manufacturer - the spin-off company was only announced last year and as far as I know the only trade show they have attended is CES2006. Only a couple of journalists wrote about them and they don't seem to have noted the model number at the time.

The result is that the model you are interested in is variously reported as HU191x or HW1910 or HW191D.

CeBit

Some new 19" widescreens were unveiled at CeBit. Here is a brief run-down (specifications are generally very sketchy at the moment):

Samsung will enter the 19" widescreen market with two models, the 940BW and the 940MG. The later can take TV resolution signals (I'm guessing composite and/or scart) and features stereo speakers under the screen. Samsung have been making 19" widescreen panels for a while now (theirs is the one that offers 16.7m colours undithered).

Surprise announcement form IIyama, the one-time golden boy of monitors. They plan to add to their ProLite range with the EW1900S 19" widescreen TFT. They claim it will have a 5ms response time. Looks identical to the Aigo F960 but with a different stand.

Yakumo announced the 19 WJT (a.k.a 1040148). This appears to be another OEM version of the Hanns.G ? and Norcent LM-965W.

I've updated the 19" Widescreen Displays guide with the details, pictures, etc.

In other news, HannStar Display has begun producing panels for the 19" widescreen market, while AU Optronics (AUO) is expected to enter the market in May 2006 and Innolux Display plan to enter the market in Q2 2006 1.

Just bought 7 (yes, I said seven  ) Dell 2005FPWs for a client at £331 each in the UK. That price ends tomorrow.

I assume they'll be replacing it with the 2007FPW model, but at that price who cares?

Hi guys-- My 1st post at MacRumors!!! :D

I picked up one of the Westinghouse 19 inch wide screen monitors earlier this week. It's the first ws monitor I have purchased, and I must say that I am very pleased! The display quality is outstanding, and for just under US$279 at Best Buy it's a great bargain. I highly recommend for the Mac Mini!

By the way, because of the phyical design of the rear of this particular monitor.. with a little brainstorming and imagination whipping up a small plastic base, it makes for a great place to put an iSight camera! I have mine just sticking out over the top center, and with the video window open, it makes me look like I really am staring almost directly into the camera! Very cool indeed.

Kind Regards,
Steve
