good riddance, i always thought the Shuffles were the weakest point of the iPod line up. I mean, they don't even have a screen and Sonys with screens get a ton more battery life...sheesh. Compact is one thing, but if you aren't packing the function with it, you are making the wrong product. All i can say is at least Apple sold a good few and wasn't left with dead weight in their factories...:p

The sony's quoted ton more battery life is because atrac encodes at 66 kbs. Ewww what **** sound that would be.

The Shuffle is simple effective and different to the rest of the market. It works well, and do you really need a screen? I hardly ever look at the screen on my 3g or mini!

I think that the reason that apple hasn't released any ipod stuff is becasse they are going to release another redesign. I think that @ mwsf we will see a movie section on the itms, and the mini will be the front piece of the home system.

Apple has released iPod stuff. Is the 5g with movie playback not an iPod and was it not released recently!?!?!

regardless, with a screen they still clock in at way more than the measly 12 hours a shuffle brings for normally encoded songs. Not to bash Apple, just stating the facts, Sony, with more features and same portability delivered a more functional product.

But are those "features" real necessities? Is it anymore functional, I mean you can listen to the music on both players?

yes, but music is best in LONGER incriments, and with a screen to let you know the name of a song you might have forgotten. It is undeniable that the Shuffle would have been more successful with both of these, as it is clearly possible to do this and achieve a small casing at a low price, so why is this even being debated?

You're obviously not drinking enough of the Kool-Aid. Here, have a cup! Those features will only be innovative and the One True Right Thing To Do if and when somebody gets around to slapping an Apple logo on them, and not a minute sooner.

Looking at the SanDisk website today I did see something that would be cool if Apple implemented it, and that's U3 technology. It allows you to store programs on a USB drive that don't touch the host computer. It's windows only, but the majority of computers you come in contact with in the workplace or travelling unfortunately run windows, a crying shame I know.

I just want it to look better and less like a piece of LEGO.
Actually, the LEGO look is "in." :D

These External HDD were just released by LaCie. Link

I think it would be cool for zooming in and out of pictures, or perhaps some advanced video slow motion. I would hope the thought would be to keep the click wheel portion the same, and just "add" the scroll ball.

I think a scroll ball would be awkward to control, especially as they sink in as you scroll on them.

auw, thats so 1990's. Except for the USB drives but this technology is now finally copied from macOS system 7.1

O, and this U3 tech doesn't work with all apps, these have to be specifically written for the device. Its not that great, Apple is probably just going to let you install a full osX system on the iPod, if they think the time is right.:/

agree! it's better to keep but to lower the prize.

I have a 512 Mb shuffle and a ipod video 30GB - fits me perfectly. the nano is really nice - but when i want small and low weight - for excercise shuffle is best. but for trips - the video is great.

Once a shuffle gets past 1gig it really needs to have some sort of screen. They should integrate the shuffle into a cell phone battery and create a way to make it work thru the phone.
Ideally, I would like the shuffle to be small enough to clip on your ear. Or integrated inside of really cool headphones.

Thanks 804quadra brownie points gratefully accepted. This design (see attached thumbnail) is redesigned and more elegant I am sure you will agree...While a scrollball could be fiddly with the right amont of resistance to its movement, anything is possible. Think of those mouse sticks on ThinkPads.

The scroll ball idea sounds cool, and you can have brownie points for that, but the rest of it looks the same. If anything, this is a variation on that theme.

Retailers Selling Out

I walked into JB Hi Fi store in Australia and noticed they had no 1 gb shuffles in stock... They are definately being sold! Has anyone else noticed a lack of 1024 shuffles?

That looks good, and could work if it had either Textured buttons (in some way) or recessed surfaces like the 3G ipod (with lighted buttons) had.

Sadly I think Apple would stick with the click wheel idea, keeping the size big, and less pocketable :(

tried to buy one before and after x-mas in zurich, switzerland - none of the outlets i went to had any left - they were all sold out - finally found one in southern germany - accessories were also hard to come by, almost everything i wanted was sold out too - armband, the dustproof case on a lanyard.... i wish they would bump it up by a few gigs... i am having my language courses on it and take it running ... fantastic ... for any sports activity this thing is the best

Bump by a few gigs? You'll struggle to find an Mp3 player that has more than 4GBs of storage and no screen.

Interestingly, up here in Canada one of the major electronics retailers (Future Shop) was blowing out all of its 512MB iPod Shuffles for $99CDN this week. This marks the first instance in which I'v seen it discounted from it's usual $129 anywhere~~~ as a side note, I'v not seen the 1gb iPod Shuffles in stock anywhere in many, many weeks.
