I'm not trying to be a dick, but using the stock earbuds, you might as well be listening to a cassette player. You can't honestly make a sound quality comparison using those earbuds. I'm afraid to even ask what quality your music is in. If it isn't at least 192kbps (which just cuts it for decent headphones), your ability tell the difference in sound quality is even worse.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Stock apple buds ewww.

Yup, as with the vast majority of the MP3 players on the market, the iPod stock earbuds are crap. Besides, most respectable modern MP3 players have good enough basic sound quality that the majority of users won't be able to tell them apart in a volume-matched blind testing. The biggest problem with the iPods in sound is, as always, its equalization and sound enhancements, or lack thereof.

This is for those of you that already own the G1 version and have bought the G4.

I mainly use my ipod for checking email and web browsing. Im a college student so I have wifi pretty much everywhere I go. My question is this: does the faster processor really make that big of a difference for the web browsing? I am not concerned about the battery life because I always can charge it before it dies so thats a non-issue. I am right now just unsure of paying basically 300 bucks (I would want the 32 gb version because already have filled my 16 gb 1st Gen and want to add more music) for the 4g unless the performance actually makes a huge difference in using the device. Right now I am somewhat content with my 1G, yeah it can be kinda slow and it has a line of dead pixels, but it gets the basics done. So basically does the upgrade of processor / screen / addition of cameras worth $300?

Thanks for any feedback.

different, but hopefully useful vantage point. i've owned:

ipod touch 1G
ipod touch 3G
iphone 4

even for simplest of usage like email/web browsing, the leap from the 3G from 1G ipod touch was dramatic speedwise. this may largely due to having iOS3 on my 1st gen touch, but the speed difference is a major upgrade and this isn't even the A4 chip.

fast forward to the iphone 4 with the A4 chip...i would say the difference in performance between my iphone 4 and 3rd gen touch is small compared to the difference between the 1G and 3G touch.

(btw, still love my 3G touch since it is 64gb and can hold over half of my music collection (i have tons of CDs ripped to 224kbps) so it's still my primary music player when i travel even though i now own an iphone (my first))

of course, beyond speed, there are other upgrades between the 4th and 1st gen touch, but as far as speed goes, i would say it's a worthy upgrade, especially for someone running out of space on their 16gb first gen.

I had the 1st gen iPod touch and loved that device. Sold it but still miss it. My first iOS device and customized it like crazy when we still had Installer instead of Cydia. My favorite era for jailbreaking was in the pre-2.0 era when it was still an underground thing. Still fresh and everything was free. Now it seems played out.

Only thing I hated about it was the lack of external speaker. And the lack of RAM made it crash like crazy. If I didn't have an iP4 already, I'd say a 4G touch is a no-brainer upgrade over a 1G. Doesn't matter how much sentimental value I had with the 1G, the 4G seems obviously much better.
