Oops. I actually just went through his profile and didn’t immediately see him commenting about the customers having no idea which to buy. (Sorry Kyle). Apparently I was thinking of Ben? I just know the tone of their employees comments on MR and Reddit have completely jaded me towards a company I used to love.

To be clear here. Every one of my responses is meant to inform. I fully stand behind you making your own decision. But the least I can do is explain our reasoning when possible so you understand why we did something. You don't have to agree with it, but at least you'll understand our thought process. I'm aware that some people will never agree with our decisions and I won't pretend that anything I can say will actually change that. But when presented with the option of providing someone with actual information vs blowing smoke, I'll choose the giving you actual information. For better or worse I'm not going to lie to someone to make them happy or earn their purchase.

Mac is same version as subscription, it just doesn’t give you access to the 1Password website. Windows version is now subscription only, I believe.

So, unsaltedrhino' statement still stands: agilebits are forcing subtly the standalone version users to "migrate" over to the subscription model.

I since migrate in the opposite direction, to enpass. It's more than good enough of a replacement for 1password standalone.

Yeah, I know you support guys get a lot of flak. I do actually appreciate you guys helping people out considering it’s often a thankless job.

its ok to get paid over again, just not in subscription model where you have online account. Maybe an app that locks down every 1 or 2 years if not repurchased. Putting things in the cloud is not a good idea. There are breaches all over the place
What's the difference between paying for a subscription annually and the app stopping to work after one year (to be unlocked by another payment)?

And it is highly ironic that the only feature that is subscription-only (cloud) is the one you don't want. You criticise the existence of the subscription version because it has a feature you don't want. Next, you are going to complain that the car you don't want is too expensive.

We aren't forcing anyone to migrate over to the subscription model.

The Windows version was in a rough spot. We had a reasonable enough option, though certainly not as great as we wanted, that worked for standalone users. But we had absolutely nothing for our subscription customers. So we left version 4 to the standalone side. We don't believe that's a great option for users now though and have since stopped selling it.

However, we needed something for subscription users, so that was how 1Password 6 started life because we offer a business solution (1Password Teams) and this is far less useful if you don't support Windows, as it's very prevalent in business use. So we had to get a subscription solution out. This is why 1Password 6 is subscription only.

Version 7 for Windows is going to support subscription and standalone licenses. We've already announced that.

I apologize for the delay in us getting this all released and available to customers. The timing just didn't work out well for us and we had to pick our battles. Version 7 will be a much more capable application for subscription use, and it'll add the much needed and requested standalone side back in that users grew accustomed to with version 4. (there was no version 5).

Just because you call it 'forcing' doesn't make it so. I could call you any kind of names, but me using them is not the same as you fitting the description (unless you think it should be so).

I had the grandfathered? app purchase from years and years ago and I never felt forced or even coerced by Agilebits to upgrade. I got the 1Password Family Teams plan recently - because I wanted to. Never once was I forced or more than a few times encouraged to get the Teams / subscription plan - this is something VERY FEW companies do. Most companies blast in your face: "UPGRADE NOW" every time you open the app. Because Agile bits didn't do this was a huge factor in my decision to upgrade. I will go out of my way to not upgrade when companies "force" or overly coerce.

So up until recently I was using the iCloud standalone app and want to voice my opinion that I was never forced or even slightly encouraged to upgrade via the application.

WAS a great program. It used to be standalone (the only reason I still use it) but they needlessly forced new users to switch to a subscription model so you have to keep buying it over and over again. No thanks.
They are re-introducing standalone vaults with 1Password 7, which should be released sometime this spring. I've been a subscriber for just over a year now, and I absolutely love it. I have absolutely no problem paying the $60 per year for my entire family to use it.

This is a wonderful feature, but I hope they develop the option to check all your passwords at once; I've got 912 passwords and checking them one-by-one would take forever. Perhaps it could tag all the vulnerable items?

That's good to hear. I had forgotten about the subscription model introduced since I had purchased my standalone one.

I've been using this app since the very beginning. I still love it. I trust Agile Bits. They're a good company and they truly care about their customers. And I think they handled the subscription thing with class. i'm still running up-to-date subscription-less versions on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. I was never storm-armed into "upgrading" to their new subscription model.

I guess some folks around here have been living under a rock since 1Password 6 was released. Just for your own information: 1Password 7 for Windows is in beta and it will support the standalone version and the subscription model. From time to time I advise everyone to read their blog before jumping to any conclusions.

Great idea. Too bad, by now any website managing something even remotely sensitive has no choice but to bother users with 2-factor auth.

I made a small hobbyist website recently with username/password login. 95 of the accounts out of like 40,000 got hacked by what seemed to be someone trying only a few known username/password combos for those users (rate limits and captchas prevent too much guessing). Fact is too many crappy sites' databases have been hacked and the combos stolen, and you can't blame users for it.

Well, it's in beta. It's called not bothering to read dev notes for unreleased software, not living under a rock.

Is it being kept up to date along with the subscription version?
Same question stands for the windows version

The Windows (stand alone) version is REAL out of date. There was a blog posting of a 1Password7 for windows coming out within the next 7 years that will address this issue.

Why would anyone pay for this when iCloud offers this for free.

Works on Windows, iPhone, etc... does secure notes, and has the option to do a family plan so I can have 5 people under one $60/year option. There is a huge difference between the two. If you only have 1 Mac and only use Safari then the keychain may work but even that won't auto-load ALL passwords or save all passwords or pins --- one is a lot more featured and the other is a browser/OS password logger.

1Password is so ridiculously worth the couple of bucks per month. Rick, one of the engineers there, had such great customer service a couple of years back. Couldn't be happier. Great guys.

Because it’s 100% useless on Windows, android, and Linux.

And it does way more than just passwords.

Easy to have a common vault for passwords I share with my wife. Then another one with the whole family. Storage to store important documents (encrypted), and with 1Password X, I can use 1Password on my work computer and not get IT involved. iCloud cannot do any of this.
