I don't think a new user can from the Mac App Store. At least that is how I read the newsletter.
You can. I just posted the link to take you there.

Thanks for the correction. I also just read Kyle's post which confirmed your previous statement. You can. I just posted the link to take you there.
I just found a flaw with the single payment model and the Mac App Store. Everything was working fine for me, even the latest updates, without having to make a new purchase. UNTIL I went to an old MacBookAir I wanted to start using, found the 1Password corrupted and redownloaded from the MAS. It now sees everything (it connects to two vaults) but is locked read-only, asking for a $65 purchase.
I've filed a help request with Agile Bits. Their website is all over solving this problem for people with licenses purchased from them (issue being the same when customer downloads updates from MAS instead of AB), but mentions nothing about MAS purchases. It seems to me that they have completely blown this and should have introduced the subscription version as a totally new product.
Hi talmy
Would you mind posting your support ID that you received when you sent your email? I'd be happy to pull up your case and see what the status is.
In general though all apps, including 1Password, that are purchased from the MAS must be re-installed using the same Apple ID you originally purchased on in order to restore your purchase. As 1Password uses an in-app purchase for the standalone option it is not possible to share it with Family Sharing (this is a restriction of in-app purchases, not 1Password specifically).
Thanks
Ben

But your hint solved the problem. I've got two Apple IDs (because Apple provides no way to combine them). I had used the wrong ID and didn't realize it because 1Password is now a free download. After switching the Apple ID to the one used for the original purchase, and downloading again, it's now all working!
So whats the best way to upgrade from 1password individual plan to family plan when all users are on Macs?
Update: As 1Password mentioned on Twitter, the company has "no plans to eliminate standalone licenses," so any user who prefers to avoid subscription tiers can still do so.

AgileBits will do the right thing and maintain the traditional one-off payment for version X with usually a free upgrade for version Y. If they don't, I may have to send a strongly worded email to Dave Teare who every couple of months will send me an email updating me about various happenings. I don't want to hit that unsubscribe button Dave! But don't tempt me. Dave, don't youTearedare Dave!

I’ll just use iCloud Keychain and save myself $36 a year.
MEMO TO ALL APP DEVELOPERS: I will never pay for a subscription, and if you ever change your model to a subscription one, I will stop using your app and recommend a different one to others.
Hey, MR, you really should update your article to note that AgileBits is going to continue to sell standalone licenses of 1Password just as they always have. This article is going to cause a bunch of people to freak out unnecessarily.
