Also, sharable. My wife and I have separate vaults and also a shared vault for household passwords like utilities and whatnot. It works brilliantly, and the fact that I never ever have to worry about us losing passwords makes it well worth the subscription price.

I love 1Password but there is always a error when I try to install updates now. Hope I can install this

Well the Safari extension stops working every few days and can't be fixed without a reboot so, I'm not sure how much longer I'll be using 1Password.
Came here to see if anyone else was having this issue. The Safari extension hasn’t been working for a while now for me, on a 2017 MacBook 12” and 2020 M1 MBP. According to recent reviews on the App Store it’s affecting other people too. I started migrating passwords over to Keychain last night because of how annoying it was to copy / paste passwords from the desktop app instead of being autofilled by the Safari extension so I’m surprised it doesn’t seem to be affecting more people in this thread.

A reboot fixes it. But nothing else.

What I have found is that if you completely quit 1Password first then updates tend to apply with no issue. Sometimes I close all browsers completely as well.

1Password really changed my work and home experience. Unless you really check into it it's hard to imagine how much it can do to make things so much easier to deal with. In a way it also works as a bookmark manager as well, and the ability to share certain groups of passwords with others is a great feature in the office.

I saw a few comments on how it's just Keychain but with a subscription. It's so much more, and if you can use the added features it's well worth the subscription fee, which is only a few bucks.

Seeing the replies (and knowing I need to be better than I currently am) I thought I'd have a look at 1password, but it is yet another subscription service. That is a hard pass for me.

Is there a similar one people can recommend where I can just pay a one off fee, please?

Edit: LOL, downvoted for asking a question. Bravo...
The thing is, it's a service and not just a program that you buy. In order for it to work on all your devices (phone, Mac, PC, iPads, etc) it needs to be centralized so that all devices are working from the same list of credentials. It's that part of the ecosystem that you are paying for. Once you delve into it you start to see how full-featured it really is. It can be a bit of an adjustment getting started but they offer a 180 day trial (yes, 180), and once you start checking into it it all makes good value sense. For the 2.99/mo it's very worth it for many people.

This is the one subscription I can justify, in that I'd do a paid upgrade every year if available - this is just spreading that upgrade fee out over 12 months.

The user interface for storing/recalling/editing login information is the biggest difference vs keychain. for me. Good lord, look at all the stuff I've got in there...

Very happy with the dark mode for web, this is something I was asking for a couple of years now, I'm glad it's finally been implemented. Thank you Agilebits!

1Password has a purchasable desktop license, they just make it VERY difficult to find. I am currently using version 7.8.4, which was just updated. I believe that when I purchased, I had to contact 1P and learned that you have to install the subscription verion, then click something to activate the single-pay license. So it looks like a subscription app, but there's a way to make it a prepaid full license.

Agree with you, I'll never buy a subscription app.

Keychain is not reliable and cannot store other important information related to a website or account. Never rely on only on keychain or any other password manager. Always have a backup app for your passwords.
I am using OS X/macOS since it's "birth", I never had any problem with keychain and I am 100% sure 99.999% of others don't have a problem with keychain reliability too, otherwise there would be lots of noise here on MR and elsewhere, guess what, there hasn't been such issues.
So, there you are, non sense.
Backup is always a good advise, TimeMachine will backup keychain so even if it is corrupted it can still be salvaged.
Keychain can do a bit more than most people think, not as much as 1Passport but sufficient for most.
I think 1Passport is too expensive, €70 is a lot for just a passport manager, especially since the built in keychain is sufficient for most.

Serious question — why would someone use this app over the iCloud Keychain? Is it just because it’s cross platform?

....yeah. have windows, ios, ipados, and macos devices.

not to mention the UI is substantially better for managing these things over icloud keychain.

What I said isn’t nonsense. Just because you have never had a problem doesn’t mean other haven’t. Several on the forum have stated the same as me. It isn’t always reliable.

590 reused passwords? 😆 (I'm not much better.) I use 1password after struggling with keychain across multiple devices, multiple iCloud accounts (Apple please let me merge them) and multiple applications that don't support keychain at all.

With some applications I have to open keychain, search for the password, unlock the password, copy and paste. It works, it is free but as an Apple application the user experience and GUI design reminds of something out of Redmond.

Very nice. I’ve only ever used it solo before but will keep that in mind for the future.

I had this also – had to killall 1Ps helper utilities before it would update.

I’m sure 99.999 peRceNT of users aren’t limited to those platforms and would like a universal solution that just works.
