I have a secondary Android phone and an iPad Pro 10.5 that doesn't allow me to run Apple Passwords, hence I'm sticking with the 1Password app.

Until I get a new iPad and Apple supports Android for Passwords, I can't switch.

I'm still on v7. Been thinking of trying out Strongbox. Yes, still cost money. But, they have lifetime license as well. Curious if others have tried it.

Don’t do that. The app was just acquired by Applause last week. There was some drama with Applause in the past if you want to look it up. And I wouldn’t bet on them honoring lifetime licenses.

Agreed. Strongbox has also consistently touted itself as either being open-source, which it isn't, or being somehow associated with open source, as in its recent announcement about the acquisition:

Strongbox has long been one of the best password managers available, built with security-first principles, open-source transparency, and user control at its core. We’ve admired it for years, and now, as its new stewards, our mission is simple: keep Strongbox great and make it even better.

This lacks transparency at best, and I think is actually deceptive. And this was before its aqcuisition by Applause, which has its own checkered history.

For a Keepass-based password manager, check out KeePassium. Or use Bitwarden. Both are truly open source.

Well, I'm gonna check up if 1PW are worth it for sure this year - they will bill me $45 in December.
Before that I will check up and see if it's worth a shift - if any other of the apps can import all I've stored in 1PW as well. Might be worth it now when they won't give me any more rebate 🙂

had been using 1password for years but decided to let my subscription lapse and give BitWarden a try.
For my use, it works well. iOS, Android as well as Windows for work. It's not as polished as 1password but it works!

Went to the Password app and never looked back. Wayyyyy easier with all the integration, syncing, and 'free'!

Couldn't for the life of me get family members to use the 1Password app, but with Apple it's beyond easy to share everything with groups and everyone is forced to use it anyway, so makes it easier from a family standpoint.
Definitely. Plus having the 6 digit two-factor codes integrated into Apple’s own app also makes it much easier as well

I’ve started transitioning some of my two-factor codes (that were previously with Google Authenticator) over to the Apple Passwords app just to make things easier and avoid having to go through that extra step of having to open a separate Google Authenticator app when the Apple Passwords app will just enter the code automatically (right within Safari) it’s so much easier that way

Any authenticator app is going to be much more secure than two-factor codes (sent via SMS) but it’s also more convenient with the side benefit of not having to go and delete those unwanted SMS text message threads after the fact. Keeps the messaging app looking much cleaner that way

A subscription to keep access to the passwords you use for your other subscriptions of things you can probably get for free as well. What stage of capitalism are we in?

You don't need to keep the subscription active in order to access the information on 1Password. You will always have access.

Why would you pay for a password app when the OS has one for free?!?

Not even close! 1Password is not just a Password App. Read this earlier reply here to understand why.

1Password is more than a Password Manager. It's a complete application to store ANY sensitive Texts/Images/Documents/PassKeys/SSHPrivateKeys/BlockchainKeys and more, that requires the highest standards E2EE secure encryption with fast sync to every device and OS platform. There is still no competition that offers the same level of security and options as 1P. You can use it (read only) even with a expired subscription.

1Password all the way here.

Except for one big gotcha. The vaults are stored in Canada. I have nothing against them but I will NOT store anything there. I use 1password 7. Works fine, encrypted and stored locally.

Surprised no one has mentioned ProtonPass. Quite solid.
There is potential with ProtonPass but it is not yet even close to being on-par with 1PW at this early point in its development. I have tried it but its not ready to be considered a tier-1 option yet.

It has potential, but it is not really optimized yet. People say 1Password is bloated, but if you compare the app size of Proton Pass to 1Password, it is actually much larger. Their browser extension is triple the size of the 1Password one. They rely on many frameworks and libraries, which they will probably optimize in the future.

Been using EnPass local vault for a while (I absolutely refuse to store my passwords in the cloud under any circumstances) and it's fairly close functionality-wise to 1Password. They also offer a lifetime, 1-time purchase license option.

To me the nicest thing about Enpass is the ability to have multiple vaults. I have a local vault setup for all the stuff I don't want stored in the cloud, banks, CC info etc. Then I also have a primary vault that is stored on Dropbox at the moment and has general, low value stuff in it like forum logins, subscriptions etc that I can share across devices. If any of that stuff gets hacked I won't lose any sleep over it.

Not against paying companies. I'd be find paying for upgrades when needed. Maybe every other year if there is something compelling. Like OS support at a small fee. But, paying yearly/monthly when I don't need the new features, that is silly. Outside of security updates and updated browser support, I have been fine with V7. So, 4 years of paying for something I didn't really need. I'll pass.

And it's not like 1Password is like some Ma & Pa operation that needs the money. They have their name plastered front and center on the halo bar of 4 time Formula 1 reigning champion Max Verstappen and teammate Liam Lawson. So every time they go to the in car camera you see 1Password right in the middle of the screen. F1 sponsorships do not come cheap.

These deals are available only to new 1Password customers

Longtime 1Password customer here, and thanks for punishing my loyalty!
Introductory subscription offers has been a key feature of marketing since they were for newspapers, magazines and book clubs only.

I've used 1password since v1, and it works great for me. No issues, and I don't understand the slowness comment - it's instant for me on all my Macs and portable devices.

I did not like it becoming a yearly subscription though, and with Apple Password being introduced last year and now extensions to Firefox and Chrome being added I'll look into migrating.

I agree somewhat as I have the subscription of 1PW - I just wished they had a iPW Light for half the price, or less. Think a lot of people would’ve been interested in that - myself included.
I’m gonna check around, as I’m not that interested to pay their full price, when they won’t offer me more discount later this year.
Sure, it’s a really good app, but not everyone need all of it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm currently looking into different apps, Bitwarden with local syncing looks very promising.

I don't know. You're one succesful supply chain attack away from handing all this sensitive info to hackers. I prefer to keep them on computers I control.

MacOS actually has a nice feature for storing sensitive documents. Just put them into an encrypted DMG. It's built in, proven tech, and well supported. Works for me.

Name one.. I'll wait

Better = Matches or exceeds functionality
Doesn’t need to exceed functionality - its primary purpose is to manage passwords in a vault. All the extra crap is to try and justify a ludicrous subscription.

Bitwarden. Not as pretty, but who cares? Does 1Password still make you store your vault in the cloud? I’ll wait here for your response.

Here's what is weird... I have 25 categories.. I think it may be from when I had a "teams" or some other variation of account where you could create your own (Web)

This is where you don't have a complete understanding of 1PW.. much more than "passwords"

There is also this... Apple Passwords really needs OS password as well as app password..
