Owning a 1st gen iPhone was a status symbol. It showed you could pay the big bucks up front (sort of) and it was aluminum. Aluminum is like a pro status symbol. Now the iPhone is black and white plastic, a 'consumer' product.

When you got the first iPod didn't you feel special?

Well I have a 3g so I can't say I feel like that but knowing Apple I probably will have this feeling very soon. I do feel depressed after leaving tmobile only to have them release a strong competitor for the iPhone 2 months later.

I get the bit about feeling like part of an exclusive club. But I'm quite happy that Apple have had a huge success with the iPhone 3G. It still makes me smile seeing them everywhere, and I really DO see them everywhere now.

When it comes down to it its really not that big of a deal...its just a phone...granted a pretty one with some neat tricks but still...just a phone

Well, at least you're honest about how shallow you are. Ultimately having more stuff or cool stuff will never bring you any lasting satisfaction.

I once read a quote in Time magazine from one of the Google founders after Google went public and they hit it big. He was asked something to the effect of what had changed or what had he learned from becoming an instant rich guy. The quote went something like this (paraphrased):

"You always hear that money can't buy happiness and I believed that for the most part but I also thought that maybe a whole lot of money would buy just a little happiness. It doesn't."

That's experience talking.

You want to feel special again? Jailbreak the iPhone and customize it.
I see a lot of iPhones around here in downtown SF, but you'll be amazed how mnay people do not know about jailbreaking.

I jailbroke my 1st Gen, used Winterboard, changed the wallpaper, changed some icons, and people always ask me how I did that. When I tell them, they usually something like wow youre smart, its so complicated, etc. I say its actually really easy, they dont listen though.

I'm a first generation iPhone owner and when that was the only iPhone, I felt special. Everyone else had flippers or sliders and I had my awesome touch screen (no moving parts!). But now that Apple is selling the 3G for a lot cheaper (although ever 2 years it will be more expensive), I see a lot of 3G iPhones out there and I don't feel special anymore.

I'm very happy for Apple for them selling lots of iPhones, I mean, that's the point of a company, to sell as many products as possible.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I definitely feel your pain. Having the first gen iPhone was wAAAy cooler. Yes, it was a status symbol because you had to pony up the big bucks back then... but it's not just that. I work in corporate America and everyone and their brother has the iPhone 3g. This morning, I heard someone talking about the fact that although they knew they could receive e-mail on their iPhone, they "never tried to send one" because the iPhone has too many functions to learn. Unfortunately, iPhone 3g isn't so cool when your 60 year old bosses are carrying them around, constantly checking Outlook and talking about charges for data roaming.

In other news, I did finally buckle and switch to the white 3g. (I think white sort of makes me stand out from the crowd still... right??? Joking...) Anyway, I went to ATT and it was DEF not as much fun as the first time around -- going in to Apple, activating at home, etc. Plus, my iPhone 3g is doing weird things... like getting orange-ish spots in the black casing around the edges of the phone. I'm talking 8 days in here, people. I am thisclose to paying the restocking fee and switching back. Le sigh.

Someone has to say it, might as well be me. If you need a phone to make you feel special you have alot bigger problems then the fact that your phone doesn't make you feel special. Get some therapy, it might help.

LOL...:D

i am shallow, i have no problem with admitting it... and it definitely takes more than a phone to make me feel special

The large majority of the general public won't know the difference between the 1st gen Iphone and the 3G Iphone so when someone asks just say it is an Iphone and be happy. ;)

It is a great piece of technology but don't make it your god.

Eric

I like to have the 'latest and the greatest' and probably lots of people are like that with things they can buy. What you buy and what you own kind of sets your status. I don't know of any big name CEOs that ride a bike to work (if you know of any please post a picture ^.^), they have fancy cars. Something like a car can be a status symbol as well as clothes you wear. A phone is kind of the same way.

My dad used to tell me stories about back in the old days when the first pocket calculators just came out, they were super expensive and only a few people had them. I bet those few people felt pretty special. Now you can pick one up at the 99cents store.

I guess the iPhone is going to be the same way. It was exciting in the beginning but it will slowly become common place.

Back to the clothes, now that I think about it, Jobs doesn't really have fancy clothes but then again, his status is already set so high he doesn't need it.

What a crazy thread. If I was to complain about this to my mother, I can just imagine what she'd say, in a wonderfully sarcastic voice.

If only I had your problems, son.

People are still in awe when I have my iPhone 3G out and are constantly asking to see it and play with it.

Yeahhh.... I used to do that to people.. I guess starting tomorrow (YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!! IPHONE) people will do that to me too.
