I've a 1st gen Macbook that doesn't see much use since it can't run a supported OS X version.

In fact, I've two Macbooks. The 2nd one is a 2nd gen (has full 64-bit functionality while the 1st gen does not). The 2g isn't the one I'm concerned about though...not yet, at least.

I'm curious on if these can be repurposed. I haven't tried yet, but I suppose I can install Linux on it, or OpenBSD.

I'm not looking for the machine to be competitive with the latest notebooks...if it can be used as a browsing machine and still have software support, that would be great.

What's everyone's experience with this situation?

Core Duo model? Throw in a 60GB SSD and put Windows 7 on it. In my experience that's the best thing to do… mainly for driver support & performance.
