If you're referring the the "grandfather" passage, that just means current IPhone users won't experience price increases to reflect the price increases of the new plans..

Your plan does NOT carry over to a new phone..

New phone = New Plan = New Rates..

So only grandfathers get to retain their current plans and prices? What's up with that? My grandfather doesn't even own a computer!

Yep, original iphone owners definitely made out better this run. The fact you get to keep you cheaper rate plan is great. $15 more a month sucks. Not worth it for 3g.

Ha! thanks for the hug.

As you know, i just mean that your iphone is as excellent now as it was yesterday regardless of the 3G iphone. You would not have been shafted in any case. Fortunately, it gets even better with 2.0.

Enjoy, and thanks for having a sense of humor. I will try to have one now :)

I will buy a 3G iPhone.. I waited for a few things and these announcements deliver for me.

Enjoy the hug, but don't get all touchy feely on me....

Question for ya? Why are you going to spring for 3G, just for kicks, or does that 3G serve a purpose, are you a heavy broswer? Will it help with your exchange support? I have 3G where I live, but WIFI is everywhere too! So, whats making you want to upgrade? Just curious....!

I completely understand the OP's point, and agree to some extent. 3G is fine, but with WiFi (which will be free to all iPhone users in places that have ATT WiFi) it's not a must. EDGE is certainly tolerable for the day to day stuff like Google Maps and the like. GPS is very cool, but not all that necessary.

So other than those two features, if you have a first gen phone you most certainly will be reaping the benefits of 2.0 apps while maintaining $20/month data prices.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the announcement. My fear was this was basically going to be just a 3G version of the phone I already own, and for the most part I was right. Not to mention they *still* haven't mentioned whether or not we're finally getting things like MMS support and copy/paste. If Apple can't give me those two items on it's second try at a device, perhaps it's time to move back to a BlackBerry.

No offense or anything, but you're still wrong.

Current iPhone users can keep their $20/month plan if they keep using their existing iPhone. If they upgrade to the new one, they are forced to sign a new contract and they will be charged the same $30 as everyone else.

Aside from that, I don't understand why this is a big deal. Every single Windows Mobile and BlackBerry device on the At&t network is $30 a month, REGARDLESS of whether you are in a 2G or 3G area, for unlimited data. The iPhone has finally become a true smartphone, so it is finally being treated the same.

At least the iPhone still gets Visual Voicemail. That is one thing not included with WinMo and BlackBerry plans, which are, again, $30 a month.

For a mac rumors Demi God, youre sad with your status, I would expect a demi god to know all, not be a know it all. Can I repeat again youre wrong? It's for some reason extra fun telling you in particula youre wrong. I smile every time I say 'you're wrong". NickSpohn, is wrong, :p

Guys, lets assume you are right and that 1st gen iPhone owners will still pay 20$ a month...Ok. But please don't tell me I have to extend my contract. Why can't I just go to the AT&T store, prove to them I'm an existing iPhone customer, buy a 3G iPhone, and take it home and use it w/o extending my contract?

Will the GPS be only compatible with 3G Iphones? Because on the official apple site it says that GPS will be available from the App store

THERE ARE 4 LIGHTS!

$30 included 200 text as well or is it true that it will be $5? The article posted doesnt mention any $5 for texts.

It is essentially being treated the same as BlackBerrys and PDA/Smartphones. All PDA/Smartphone Personal data plans, and all BlackBerry Personal data plans are $30 a month for unlimited data, and unlimited data only. The iPhone is just being treated the same as these other phones due to the upgrades it is getting.

No, no more included texts.

I still enjoy my phone as much as I did yesterday. I'm glad I bought it and it is the best phone I've ever owned. Who can blame Apple for refreshing a product. They are a company.

So I get additional software and features for free? I'll take it.

The GPS that is on the original iPhone works great for me and helps me find my way. 3G would be nice, but so would also running a T1 line into my house.

Be happy that you guys are even able to afford an iPhone...:)

But the Grandfathered does:p:p:apple::apple:

Looks like you should know what you're talking about.

-New iPhone looks more stylish. How can you tell though? You haven't even SEEN one in person.
-The plan is the same if you have an iPhone now and upgrade
-The plans stay the same, so we spend less and get more while you spend more and get less.

Plastic is going to look cheap, it's going to attract scratches. Glad I didn't sell my first gen. oh yeahhhhh

To be honest that is the only reason I am upgrading to v2 is because of GPS. (Hope it's GOOD)

I think the v1 looks better with metal back, and it now will be more exclusive then v2, which is a shame as apple always use to be premium, exclusive, it gave you a seance of importance, when you walk on to a bus or go through a airport, and you are the only one who has it (or nearly the only one), and people looking at you, thinking, dam I want one!! Good Days...

I am not in WiFi hotspots that often really, besides home and the occasional coffee shop. I have a 3G card for my MacBook Air and use it often. I believe that for the kind of browsing experience the iPhone offers, 3G is far more appropriate than Edge. I am an impatient man. Also, to be clear, I have an iPod Touch now and a Samsung Blackjack (3G) phone. I waited on the first iPhone thinking 3G would be within 6 months (why i dont know) and I was concerned about interoperability with the office as I started a new company last year. Too much information maybe?

Anyway, iPhone 1 or 2, I have waited too long and would be happy with either.

I really do like the notion of the new Me stuff.

touchy, for someone who is new to the site, who has under 100 posts, and likes to send me PM's, you sure should calm yourself down.

The way that sentence is worded, it can be easily understood as the wrong thing.

Stalk much?

I'm also considering NOT upgrading. This is deja vu all over again. I used to be the ONLY ONE with an iPod, it was a 20GB 3rd gen. The packaging was superb and exclusive, you can count the number of people who has it at my school with one hand. But then Apple pulled the mass produce, price-drop, etc stunt, and suddenly, everybody and their dog's & walker's & neighbour has one.

I stuck to my 3rd gen while Apple released two more 'major' revision. It was only when the nano came out, and it was utterly mind-blowing how small it was that I bought a new iPod.

I might do just that, again. Still debating - 3G IS very tempting. :p :)

Dude.... this is an iPhone thread... not iPod. Man, how do you Canadians find your way back over the border?

^ Same loss of exclusivity. And We get things about just as fast as you guys. LOL. except maybe for the iPhone - about 2.52 minutes slower.

Damn Apple....everytime I see that sleek black slab of plastic on their site, all I can think of is "Damn, that's sexy."

 Please, tell me when "posts" added credit to anyones life even on a message board. Please dont take the forums too seriously, there is life outside of it. # of posts = dookie. You gave bad info, you stated something wrong, came back and say it was misleading, yet it wasnt to countless others, and then come back and want to say how my 'post' status should mean I should not try to show you the error of your ways. I hope this year when we here in the US vote for President, we do it based on the number of posts they have, seeing as how the number of posts to you is so important.

Get over yourself, its an anonymous message board demi-god.

Oh, and you were wrong, bragged about being right, still never corrected. By the way, you'reeeeeeee still wrong!

Later gator....back to the fun.

So here is the interesting part:

My company has a ATT discount for 17% which doesn't apply for the iphone. I see my corporate fan number but i know im not getting the 17% discount.

If att is treating this phone like anyother phone from att. (which is why the prices are standardized). then you should be able to apply any type of discount.

So hopefully my 17% will take effect and offset the bogus 30/month data plan.

If the leaked memos are to be believed the discounts will now apply to the iphone plans.
