It's not push - when you go into the app, it'll refresh and update. If you don't 'tend' to all your notifications and messages before exiting, it shows up as a number badge on the icon.

I actually wish they would let us swap an entire page with another or create anchors that lock apps in place from being moved would make it easier to move things around.
